The ultimate W7 laptop IMO is the Dell Latitude E6540. I installed 2x 2.5 inch 1TB HDD and 1x MSATA as boot drive. Display upgraded to IPS FHD 40 pin from LG. With a removable battery, it is a breeze to lug it around.
That’s the great thing about these laptops - there is no single “ultimate” laptop. Everyone can have their own favorite. For me the ultimate machine is a 14” ThinkPad, because I like the size, and the keyboard is super important to me. That latitude looks like an absolutely sweet machine though, and if it’s the one that fits your requirements best, it is the ultimate windows 7 laptop for you.
Nice upgrade. I always wanted to do it to my t430s but never got the parts before I sold it on.
I'm using Ghost Spectre's 11, 23H2. It runs flawlessly on its i5-2520!
Nice. Maybe I'll upgrade the screen of my t420 sometime in the future too, although I can't say its shitey quality disturbs me. I've seen much worse in terms of viewing angles, and, well, got quite used to the default one
Have you got the 1600x900 one? From what I know it’s a bit better than what I had (1366x768) but still TN with poor viewing angles.
Also, how’s that keyboard?
@@3lectr1c Nah, the defaultest of all defaults, 1366. Dunno, the biggest issue I'd name with it is kinda low contrast.
The keyboard's wonderful, never used the newer ones like in your t430 so can't judge which key mechanism is nicer, but the layout is much better and intuitive. This, however, you surely see yourself on the photos and all. Esc and Delete are twice as big as other keys, function keys are grouped into fours. Had a problem with the mechanism of one of the letter keys but later it just kinda, I dunno, broke back into correct position or something so now there is no more such an issue
I have used one before on T520s and W520s that I’ve used before, but don’t own. They are certainly great. That’s probably my next upgrade for this laptop.
@@3lectr1c By the way, do you think the laptop's cooling will handle a 4-cored i7?
3840QM is the highest one that people recommend. This is only recommended though if you have the dedicated GPU heat sink installed (even if you don’t have a DGPU), or at the very least if you don’t have the quieter delta fan.
Just watch your temps, it’s an upgrade that I’m planning. Makes a T430 bench faster than a T470.
To make it truly 'Ultimate', you have to get 2x8GB of memory too.
You're right. It would, on the other hand, add to the silliness of every single upgrade being more expensive than the base price of the machine itself (as he bought it at least, granted you do not find one of these for that cheap usually, at least on the other side of the pond where I am).
16GB will happen at some point, although that’s probably the last upgrade I’ll do. 12 is in there now and that’s plenty.
Oh, and yes, this is absolutely all very silly. I could have just bought a T480 instead for a faster and more cost effective experience. But hey, that’s not nearly as fun!
Hello! Does anyone know how I can convince the Windows 7 x64 on the t430s to find the hard drives during setup? it just asks for drivers but i cant find drivers for this case.
i recently bought a ryzen 5 ideapad 3 14 inch, amazing laptop, terrible TN screen !
do you think it's possible to change the screen to a nice IPS on that specific model, how do i do it ? and If it's possible, how hard is it to do for someone who never did something like this ?
Possibly. It depends on a lot of factors. Being a newer laptop, it likely uses the EDP screen data protocol instead of LVDS. This difference was why I needed this adapter board for my older T430.
It’s most likely possible if the screen has a bezel instead of being embedded in glass, if the cable in the computer supports the higher resolution (if you’re going higher res), and if the computer doesn’t have any sort of whitelist against LCDs other than the one that the computer shipped with. What’s the resolution of the stock panel?
@@3lectr1c it's stock 1080p and i don't need any higher than 1080p, i just want to slightly improve the viewing from side angles and when the lid isn't perfectly aligned with my eyes
I’d think it would be possible at least to swap it then. Can’t be sure though, I don’t know too too much about aftermarket screen upgrades.
no worries mate, thanks for the info@@3lectr1c
Damn. Now I wanna buy a few old laptops. I have an older Toshiba but that doesn't turn on.
What model?
@3lectr1c Toshiba Portege Z930. Tbh, I tore it apart before I really knew anything about computers and I think I must've damaged the motherboard. I'm definitely regretting it now.
@@3lectr1c since you asked tho, I may as well see if I can get it running.
Ah. Good luck! Looks nice.
@3lectr1c Sorry for the many replies. It turns out that it does turn on! How wonderful. It's an i5 3437U with 4GB of RAM. I took out the msata ssd ages ago but it was 128GB and the battery is a very spicy pillow.
I had an old Dell (14z) in the closet that I pulled out to jailbreak my ipod touch 2nd gen. It was sold with Windows 7 but then upgraded to Windows 10 but then downgraded again to Windows 7 just so I could do the jailbreak. Oof, the display is so bad and it's slow af. Also it must weigh 10 lbs. Sure, I could put in an ssd, but am trying to decide if it's really worth it, given that security is non existent, and I'm hesitant to sign into any of my accounts.
For what it’s worth, it isn’t a problem using Windows 7 or any unsupported OS online as long as you don’t go to any untrusted sites or download anything you don’t 100% know is fine. Most people getting viruses are people who go to fishy websites and click on spam ads. Be careful though of course.
Why did you put the adapter behind the panel? theres lots of space in the chassis
Couldn’t see an obvious good spot. I know people have done it, but this worked fine too. I know now as well how to avoid the pressure spot damage when doing it.
Does this work for t430s
You have to purchase a different adapter, but yes. Just search on eBay for a T430s 1080p or 1440p IPS kit.
@@3lectr1c oh thanks
buy links on screen and adapter? thx
I’m not providing links because I don’t know which LCD sellers are legit - a lot of them will send the wrong screens.
this screen still ok now?????
Yes
lcd part number please... ? i want to buy the same lcd like you...
LGC LP140WF1-SPB1
Careful though, a lot of eBay sellers sell relabeled “compatible” panels that may or may not actually work
@@3lectr1c thanks bro... ❤️❤️❤️🙏
@@3lectr1c i watched your video and you have showed some adapter (8:25) to connect new monitor through it. What is the part number? And you didn't show how actually it was connected then.
don't do it the way this guy did.
You mean where I mounted the adapter? When doing it this way the most important part is to route the cables properly, or you’ll get bright spots of pressure damage on the LCD. As long as you don’t mess that up, it works fine. I’ve been heavily using my T430 since the video with no issues.
