- During the 1960's The Lovin' Spoonful had a series of hits including "Do You Believe in Magic", "Daydream" and "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind?". The band was led by John Sebastian, the son of an accomplished harp player, his father John, and a radio script writer, his mother Jane. His parents had an eclectic group of friends constantly dropping by the house; Burl Ives, Woody Guthrie and Vivian Vance to name a few. Sebastian grew up on Bank Street , in New York's Greenwich Village and attended New York University for a year before deciding to strike out on his own. By this time John could play the piano, guitar and harp and was a prolific songwriter. He formed the group The Lovin' Spoonful and met great success putting their first seven singles into the Top Ten, a remarkable achievement, but the group's road to superstardom was abbreviated after the arrest of band member Zal Yanovsky on marijuana possession charges. Yanovsky, faced with a deportation order (he was Canadian) gave up the drug dealer's name and as a result the band suffered a public backlash. The Lovin' Spoonful eventually broke up and Sebastian pursued a solo career that included writing and performing the song 'Welcome Back" for the TV series "Welcome Back Kotter" Sebastian continues to tour regularly and compose for film and TV.
Ken Rockburn spoke to John Sebastian at his home in Woodstock, New York.

Always loved John B. Sebastian......A true song writer who's songs flowed with love for your fellow man....
John is a national treasure. I could never Express the great joy he and Steve, Joe and Zal have given me. One of the greatest most important US bands.
I see everyone else feels the same about John Sebastian's sunny disposition... You kinda just want to be in his company... That much goodwill just makes you feel good inside 🥰
Summer in the City - one of my most favorite songs! Thank you, John.
Lovin' Spoonful, were one the great bands of the time. in 1965 their were many bands to love, yes The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Byrds, The Turtles, The Yardbirds, and so on. So many Groups and singers to love!
Great interview, great music, great man. Sebastian is proof you don't have to be miserable to write great tunes. Thanks John for making the world a better place.
John Sebastian has the sunniest disposition of just about anyone I know. How can that be? It's infectious and shines through his music. Thank you for sharing this.
Stephen Griffin JS appears to be a genuinely pleasant person. His reaction to the crowd after his unscheduled performance of "Darling Be Home Soon" at Woodstock is indictative of this. His expression after he walks off stage seems to say "Man, I can't believe I pulled this off, whew"
He's always been a good guy.
@@harvey1954 kinda pre buffet sorta...get that greatest hits double with so many great songs written mostly by John I saw him in jan 71'just him n Paul n he didn't disappoint!!!
I could listen to John Sebastian forever.
That was one of the most pleasant and enjoyable half hours I've spent in a long time. Great interview! Both relaxed and informative! Thanks very much, Ken Rockburn.
Well done Ken! Enjoyed the interview very much. I'll be checking out more of your CPAC Rockburn Presents UA-cams!
Very talented man. Loved the Spoonful
Great Interview. I wish he had spoken more about "Full Measure", which is one of my all-time favorite songs, not of the Spoonful, but amongst all songs. Thanks, John....
One of the great songwriters of the mid 1960's . Great musician.
I loved all his stuff. Of the Spoonful, the What’s Tiger Lilly album had some good ones in their Woody Allen movie. John and Zal guitar playing interplay was exceptional. I really liked their sound. Older now, it is so easy to listen to, no distortion. Incorporating traditional instruments made for interesting listening. Not blue grass, more folk influenced. John’s words were wonderful. I always feel like asking for more. The catalogue they left us is precious.
Uncle Burl. First musician I remember listening to from my parent’s records.
Wonderful interview. I've always loved the Lovin' Spoonful and John Sebastian. He is truly a class act. Thanks!
10:17
0:53 he had more than 2 gold records
One of the first records I ever bought was by The Lovin' Spoonful , I was 11 or 12 years old. I still have it. I'm 53.
You're a Big Boy Now!!
Great song and his rendition is so cool!
JB is my favorite mellow singer

John is so fun
He was a cool cat!

He played harmonica on The Doors' Roadhouse Blues. Worth mentioning. IMO
Good to know. Thanks!
Wow…. Never knew that!
What a genius
Amen...way underrated imho!!!
I'm looking for John Sebastian featuring a band called "The Brass Band" from Barstow that did a brass comedy Act. What year and is the video anywhere on UA-cam?
Fritz Richmond was really something...! Started the granny glasses fad too. He was a hot rodder and a drag racer, bet you didn't know that...
I've been wondering who John reminds me of, and it's Jerry Springer.
Musicwise JimmyBuffet, reminds me of John for a lot of reasons,I always thought Buffet should cover johns "coconut grove"
My flavor song is the welcome back carter song by John sebastian I love that song
Is there a bootleg of Lovin' Spoonful studio outtakes and demos Rockburn mentions?
Rockburn always has something in his hands when he interviews. Sometimes it's an iPad, sometimes it's a pen. He's a good interviewer, though.
1:33 Get a Hohner Blues harp you can bend notes more but you have to suck on it like CHRISSIE HYNDE [ I know a guy that soaks them in water before playing ] .
I have exclusive videos that nobody else has Chrissie Hynde blowing a guy on stage Chrissie Hynde nude in an animal cage Chrissie Hynde getting arrested
John soaked a harp right on TV ! David Frost Show i'm pretty sure. actually he mentioned he liked doing that and some intern ran out with a glass of water!
The Camera guys keep getting in the way, , very annoying, a candid of two other camera guys filming the interview? the editing is amateur at the least.
totally destroys this interview.Too bad.
4:38 yes annoying
Must be a Canadian film crew. Catch how he pronounced "house", "about", "outtake"?
That’s why they were joking about remembering the name of the Canadian actor….and talking about working for the CBC…
