  • There is nothing in Scrum Guide that mention capacity planning or anywhere that shows the formula on how to do it. So often times, we fall back to what we know before which is the traditional way of calculating capacity based on hours. Let me show you an easier way.

Hi, thanks very helpful. Following the example, you gave in the video when you multiply the 86x35. Is that capacity in hours or ?. Please can you explain further? it's not very clear. thanks a lot

86 is the percentage of capacity that is available. Full capacity == 7 person x 10 working days == 70. Assuming that after asking around on who is available we have is 60. So therefore 60/70 == 86%. So we use that percentage and apply to the velocity ==> 86% x 35 points == 30 points. so, during planning, if the team planned for more than 30 points then we can bring it to see what they plan are doable. It is a guide, it does not mean that the team cannot plan more than 30 points.

thank you for this. so how did you go about the total hours for ceremonies? from the max capacity?

The max capacity in terms of past velocity already accounts for the scrum ceremonies. The amount of work that a squad can do is the amount of time that they have excluding the scrum ceremonies and any other meetings. So there is no need to recount them.
