I just discovered BENT KNEE on the harp channel and I'm so glad I did. I have yet to hear a more movie soundtrack like rock band. NOBODY sounds like them. I love that they have a million different influences thrown into a blender and it comes out perfectly. You can hear the RUSH and prog influence, too which makes me smile.
I discovered them in 2016 with “Leak Water” song, which is still my favourite from them. Ben’s UA-cam channel is fantastic and Courtney has an instagram account that perfectly represents her singing style.
Great choice, Doug. Bent Knee are one of the most original current progressive bands. There are moments of beauty, high drama and weirdness in their songs. The track that hooked me was Way Too Long which has colossal drops in it, but I'd also recommend Being Human (which opens with the line: I imagine your dead body lying in my bed"), Terrorbird (with an inspired quadruplet break - the opposite of a triplet break) and the batsh*t crazy Counsellor. They also do the most psychotic version of the standard (You Are My) Sunshine you will ever hear.
My friends from Boston! Met them back in 2012 when my band was playing as Frank Zappa for a halloween show, and Bent Knee was playing their set as Joni Mitchell. As in, each band member dressed individually as Joni Mitchell
I saw them with Thank You Scientist in a small bar on Long Island, NY a few years ago. Such a good show. I met a fan who traveled from Boston to catch them. got to chat with Jennifer for a bit and bought a CD. Waiting for them to come back, they're so good!
Fantastic pick - thanks Bill! One of my favourite bands! Simply gorgeous and truly progressive! (And Courtney Swain is my all time favourite vocalist in the whole wide world ❤)
Awesome band! All of their material up to Land Animal and Paper Earth is just fantastic. Btw, I'd count the first part of the verse as: 5/4 + 5/4 + 6/4 + 4/4 + 4/4 + 6/4 + 5/4 + 5/4 Of course, the whole loop adds up to 40, so you could say it's just 10 bars of 4/4 instead of "counting like a nerd"... 😅
A great band, constantly evolving their sounds, stretching boundaries with great musicianship. Studio albums are awesome but really a band you need to see live. Saw them opening up for Leprous and Haken a few years ago. Waiting for a headlining tour that travels north to Canada.
Ooooh in for a treat today! I've been waiting for you to check this band for a year or so? Just awesome stuff and interestingly enough you probably might like their new record which is a vastly different direction with a far stronger EDM influence through it but that still managed to capture me thoroughly as well.
So glad to see more bands releasing interesting stuff these days. A good few years back I thought that the music industry was finished but it seems like there's life in the old dog yet! 😎😁😎
@@progperljungman8218 Fancy seeing you here, Prog!I discovered Bent Knee on Bryan's Channel... perhaps on your request? Great band whose discography I've gone through since then.
@@jonathanhenderson9422 Hi Jonathan! Likewise! I'm not the least surprised that you've become a Bent Knee fan. As well as a Cardiacs fan I believe 😊 I am always enjoying your great, insightful comments on different songs.
We are hosting Bent Knee in Seattle on 8/5/22 and it's going to be an epic show at the new Crocodile! So cool to see your reaction here Doug! They are a band not afraid of taking chances and I love that.
I first heard about Bent Knee reading an issue of the Burlington, Vermont weekly back in 2015 as they had played a show at the Higher Ground in South Burlington. I hadn't gone to the show, but the description of the group made them sound like one that I'd like so I checked them out on UA-cam and soon after I purchased the Shiny Eyed Babies CD. Their sound was unique and amazing and appealed strongly to my prog-rock roots. My partner and I played it over and over in the car on a two-week trip up to Canada. I think it was a year later that we were lucky enough to catch them at a concert in Poultney, VT. We were two of only 25-30 who showed up at a tiny venue at the former Green Mountain College. I was both pissed off that there was not a bigger audience for this immensely talented group AND happy that I could stand right in front of them and be fully immersed in the experience. I also got to talk with some of the band members afterwards and wanted to convey how appreciative I was of music that literally made me shiver and brought tears to my eyes. My partner and I were able to see them three more times after that and were never disappointed. Talented groups such as this deserve so much more recognition but I guess it's better to have the ability to strongly affect a small number than to sacrifice art in favor of bigger audiences. An aside: for some reason I always thought they could do a sound track for a David Lynch film. Is that crazy??
Saw Bent Knee live (as a support) 3 or 4 years ago without knowing anything about them. Pleasantly surprised but not knocked out. Glad they're around though.
More Bent Knee reactons!!! One of the greatest band of our time! I suggest also other live version: the well, good girl, Battle Creek, Not this time, Leak water live from nowhere.... wonderful stuff to Watch and hear!!!
When I got into the band, a fellow female-led band from Chicago (that I would also highly recommend) called District 97 recommended Bent Knee to me. The Say So album from 2016 was fantastic and their postcard the band sent personally was a massive highlight. Wish I could find it. As for District 97, yes, please react to them for a future Woman Wednesday. Songs like Ghost Girl, Bread & Yarn or The Perfect Young Man would be good places to start.
Love this band! A couple of members of Bent Knee have sited the band Cardiacs as an influence. Progressive pop music at its finest. I would love a reaction to "Dirty Boy" or "The Breakfast Line" from them. Complete madness in the most magnificent way!
I 'm really grateful that you have included this wonderful contemporary band in your analysis. It is one of the groups that has impressed nd enchanted me the most in recent years.
Absolutely loved this. The guest DJ idea turned out some wonderful music that we might not have heard otherwise. I am now a fan of Bent knee - thank you for that!
Wow! I'm happy I found your channel. I'm finding some awesome bands I might have missed out on. I might suggest Last Internationale. This vocalist reminds me a bit of that singer. And, possibly lyric structure.
I'm so happy that you finally got to hear Bent Knee! This is definitely one of the most interesting bands out there and after recording 6 LPs they are still changing and evolving, bringing new stuff to the table. I think you'd love their song "Being Human", it's even more rhythmically complex and explosive and live version from the similar session as this one is just amazing to watch. And on their two last albums they started to explore more noise and glitch pop sounds - which came as a shock to some of their fans but is nevertheless worth a listen, cause there's so much going on in their music. Thanks for this reaction!
Hi Doug, yeah so great to do Bent Knee! Discovered them few years ago, and they blew me away. Very authentic, stretching what your ears are used to hear. Truly amazing music and band. Underrated cos they don’t fit to any style or genre. Courtney voice is awesome. Thanx to Bill for suggesting and you Doug for doing this!
So fun to see you react to more modern groups and get so excited. It’s very infectious. Bent Knee are great! They’re a group that is themselves and makes music to reflect that.
there are definitely a few bands out of that Berklee background in the last decade or so that have that groove-focused polymeter approach you're talking about! You should check out Sungazer; they're friends of the Bent Knee band members and come from a similar background. I'd start with Threshold off of their album Perihelion.
I love watching people react to Bent Knee cause I love seeing others go through what I did but I came here to say you have major Jeff goldblum vibes and I'm here for it🤙🏾
I've been a huge Bent Knee fan since their second album. Don't expect solos; they rarely do them. They're more about the song than about individually showing off. If you plan to listen to more Bent Knee, you're in for a wonderful journey.
Amazed. I didn't know this band, but I'm a fan now. Now...any "Thank You Scientist" fans in the Doug Council? I've been meaning bring it to the table but perhaps my pull is not enough.

This is a band who have very interesting production on their albums, but the way they refine a song and perform it live gives me absolute chills. Something I notice between visual art and music is an attempt by those artists to stretch conventions. I see it in painting and sculpture with color: almost neon and almost clashing but not quite. I hear it in rhythm: pushing beyond 4/4 into other time signatures and very staccato/syncopated. I feel they are trying to wake us up.

React to their song “Terror Bird”
