I hope the Guild Wars servers continue to stay online for many years to come. I don't play very often anymore, but I still get a bursts to play for months once the itch sets in. One of my most played games ever, and what I played instead of WoW as a kid.

Don't worry Devs said that it takes so little resources to run GW that it'll probably run forever. In fact this game will most likely outlive GW2.

New character for Factions! If you want, you could make Bae Six a recruited Merc. Oh and we don't know Khilbron's first name, Vizier is a title, so now in my head canon he's Richard Khilbron ;)

One of my fondest memories was going for the title/challenge where you reach max level without dying and I was nuked from 100% hp to 0% in less than two seconds by a corrupted priests' Ray of Judgement at the door to the Factions expansion main city. I died in less than 2 seconds, a little while later that skill was nerfed, lol.
I really miss the buildl varieties that GW1 provided, but I'm sure it was a balancing nightmare for the devs to maintain.

  • @VagrantWulf

    I definitely prefer the sequel.
I admit, a part of it is that the original resulted in the most toxic, obnoxious players any MMORPG has ever had-the Ascalonians. A group of players who hate a fictional race in a fictional setting in a video game so much that they hassle anyone who plays that race, they're always making a nuissance of themselves on the forum, and they've even been known to send death threats to the players of said race. That race would be the charr.
It's even more bizarre because the charr were the targets of genocide by the humans an human Gods in GW1 (yes, that lore was in GW1, no, it wasn't added in GW2). The human Gods were C-R-A-Z-Y. They would torture people for hunting animals, looking at their beauty, being poor, and all manner of other things. The humans were deeply propagandised to worship their Gods. The only problem was was that this sort of indentured propagandised thinking was passed along to certain players.
The charr didn't actually kill anyone in the Searing (all of the NPCs lived, even Gwen), it was a scare tactic to get invaders out of hteir ancestral stomping grounds. The human king Adelbern killed the Ascalonians that didn't flee with Rurik, the Orrian vizier killed the humans of Orr. All the charr wanted was surrender so that these brainwashed and crazy nutjobs would stop trying to slaughter everyone else to death.
The humans did that, a lot. Tengu, charr, centaurs, and even themselves in The Guild Wars (an actual lore event where all of the human nations were trying to wipe one another out). The human Gods made their puppets very murder crazy. For whatever reason though, this was all the fault of the charr.
In GW2, many Ascalonian players treat the charr as though they're some kind of ethnic minority deserving of immense amount of hate, even unironically throwing around slogans like "Make Ascalon Great Again!" I really, really wish they were being ironic. The passionatae way they talk about how much they hate the charr though, and the sheer disgust they verbalise at ArenaNet for making the charr playable? Nope. These people are very unwell.
Meanwhile, charr players who came to Guild Wars 2 without having played the original are very confused about why certain people in the community were sending them death threats in the early days of GW2. This lead to a lot of charr fans actually reading up on the lore to find out what, exactly, had inspired these players to hate a fictional race this much. The language used by charr haters is bizarrely similar to ethnosupremacists while talking on topics of antisemitism. It's utterly bizarre and... very unwell.
I genuinely hope that the current GW2 content, The Icebrood Saga, helps the charr haters get this out of their system. The point ArenaNet are trying to make to them is that they sound as crazy as Smodur and Bangar, rather than more level-headed in the way Rytlock is. That they're similar to the charr, just the very worst of the charr. The majority of charr players (myself included) have nothing against anyone who plays any race, it's really ridiculous to harbour ill will over a person's race choice, isn't it?
    Ascalonians though? Yeesh.
At least No Quarter will allow charr players to snap back with "Right you are, Bangar" which is going to drive them nuts and make them feel incredibly uncomfortable.
I did play the original Guild Wars, unlike some charr players, but the Ascalonians have absolutely ruined it for me. I still have some fondness for Nightfall (which was always my favourite campaign) but... Yeah. It's been ruined. You can only see "Make Ascalon Great Again!" chanted unironically so many times.
Footnote: I don't blame the humans in Guild Wars 1 for their actions. I blame the human Gods. I was very glad that we got to kill Balthazar in Path of Fire, he had a LOT to answer for. The thing is is that most GW1 players don't seem to have the perspicacity or wherewithal to realise that the six Gods who did so many evil things were... not actually good.

    • @DaelinDwin
      @DaelinDwin 4 роки тому +3

"The charr didn't actually kill anyone in the Searing (all of the NPCs lived, even Gwen)"
Gwen, whose mother died in The Searing, was captured and enslaved before almost being fed to a Devourer for the amusement of the charr. She only escaped by being led to freedom by the ghosts of others killed by the charr.
While online abuse is obviously wrong, in the purely fictional context of Guild Wars, the charr are clearly depicted as a villainous warlike race (akin to Orcs) with only a minority exhibiting any semblance of redeeming qualities.

  • @BladeBloodreaver

Probably my favorite game of all time. Spend 1000s of hours in GvG over the 3 years is was properly supported. Assassin gameplay was probably the most fun I've had in a game of this sort. Just the shadow walking (teleporting) in combination with the all the attack skills... so many builds were viable for Assassin. I remember my A/D build all to well. Using Grenth's Grasp (enchantmet) and a cold weapon, you attacks would cripple the enemy. Because of the enchantment, Golden phoenix strike could hit and you didnt need to use a lead attack. Because golden phoenix cripples due to grenths grasp, trampling ox is guaranteed to known down, which means you can do falling lotus followed by Blades of steel for massive damage. That was my goto flat damage one. You could also switch it up with condition variation using falling spider and twisting fangs with Impale (wow impale was so OP during faction where it was 0.25 cast and did damage + deepwound, they changed to a hex later that would trigger below certain health, still good though).
So yeah with just 5 out of 8 skills for straight combat, you still had 3 left for utility (almost always 1 was rez signet). Usually 1 skill was a movement speed increase like dash or whirling charge taht increased both attack speed and movement speed, but only if you are enchanted.
Ah man, the complexity of making 8 man teambuilds was so much fun, spent lots of time just theory crafting builds for my guild. What a game this was. Shame that GW2 was NOTHING like the original GW and TO THIS DAY doesn't have proper GvG like GW1 had.

    • @astralaris8712
      @astralaris8712 4 роки тому

Well, it was gw2s prime time for what it was. Anet dropped the pvp after the first attempt at e-sports failed, and then retryied with HoT, which ended with it failing again, after that Anet completely abandoned pvp to a specific point.I do get what you mean, but for an, at that time, pve focused game, its prime time was Living Story1 and 2.
Also, Gw1s prime time was not just because of the pvp, yes, it was a big part of it, and is to this day considered one of the best pvp systems in the World, but the pve scene was a part of it as well. Otherwise the game wouldnt be still alive after so many years.

I would stick with that character for several reasons:
    1. No need for a new character, because you can do the starter missis anytime with this character and you save time getting the heroes again.
    2. Then you go for a new character, it doesnt show the progression of your warrior e.g. getting new gear (well moded weapons/ prestige armor/ new heroes etc.
Maybe a little roadmap would be like going through Fac-> NF-> EotN-> Dungeons/UW/FoW, to show the road from the scratch to the end.
    3. The Warrior has a good variety of builds! You can go dagger spammer, endurance scythe or even earth shaker.
Just my two cents about the topic...
And keep going me and a lot of other people really enjoy this series :)

Played Guild Wars 1 since its betas. Whereas most of my friends discovered MMOs with the release of WoW the following year, I and some people I convinced, were having a blast in GW1.
The fact it had no subscription fee was perfect for someone like me who wanted to play Everquest but didn't have a credit card as a teenager. It was too bad GW1 stopped receiving major updates after less than two years so they could work on its sequel (which I did enjoy 6 years later, but felt tonally different).
I feel like if WoW was delayed a year, there could've been an alternate reality where GW1 became the success that introduced many people to online RPGs, and it would've had the funding to be even better.

Loved this first part of the playthrough. It really rekindled my nostalgia for this game growing up. I'd love to see you tackle the harder areas in the game with your new account, such as Sorrow's furnace and of course UW and FoW.
One idea that could be interesting (although maybe a bit tedious) is to start a new character for each campaign and then once you finish the three main stories turn those characters into mercenaries and rock them with your final party for hard mode/elite areas of the game. That way you can showcase the full unabridged stories of the three campaigns and gain access to interesting team builds with mercenaries you wouldn't normally have access to. Just a thought.
Either way, this has gotten me to jump back into GW and do the things I never tried as a dumb kid, like Vanquishing or the elite post-game areas like DoA. Might even try for a GWAMM title.
Looking forward for future videos on this series.

I also went back to playing this video game, I kept Prophecies for last, because it is the chapter that I loved the most.
I created the ritualist a new character and played all the campaigns. I love this game, it's fantastic and it relaxes me these days.

Imo guild wars was the Pinnacle of MMOs back in the day. The original had a really badass story

Here's what I think you should do: Start a new character in Factions and play through to the end of Vizunah Square.
At that point you can decide whether to bring Bae Six in and show Vizunah Square from the other side, then continue on through factions with her, or to continue with the new character.

To this day, the original Guild Wars is the best MMORPG I ever played. And I did tried the big ones, like WoW, ESO, FF14 and Guild Wars 2. But none offered the same degree of immersion and fun Guild Wars has.

I dunno if you read comments, but I suggest you use a 2handed hammer for whatever campaign you do next, the Hammer while not top tier damage, the endless interrupts and AOE knockdowns make you feel like a god damn legend.

Loved this video, brought back so many good memories! GW was the first "mmo" style game that I played. Bought it for my wife initially about a month from release, she didn't like it so I gave it a go....ended up with over 3000 hours total, iirc circa 1600 on may main Ranger. My better half eventually got into it and running as a duo with 6 coordinated heroes was a blast, but that was after soloing the final mission with the original henchmen (oh the gnashing of teeth with the crappy pulls and "Leroy" moments!) Splinter weapon was insane until they nerfed it coz splinter/barrage was just so OP it was crazy.
Would love to see a Factions series!

This is awesome dude ! :D I beat it last night, so it's fresh, haha :D I love your vids ! :D
Few points of hilarity : I love how your character fucking DESTROYS Rurik while the mage in my cinematic just did one tiny soft autoattack to put him to sleep, hahahaha :D Also you should have paid attention to the henchmen's talk because the Stefan drunk story is great, and they criticize Alesia, haha :D I honestly never had a problem with her, and I did it all with henchmen save twice when other players brought their own heroes, but it seemed to echo what you thought of her, haha :D
And also I didn't notice Adelbern and co, wtf ???!! :D Haha :'(
I just finished Factions this morning too, so I'll hop on some of your Factions videos as well ! :D
    Keep it up, you're amazing !! :D

I miss hanging out in gToB, Marhan's, and RA when it was just below Lion's. Thank you for doing this playthrough, I haven't had a chance to play in well over 15months now but man do I miss this.
I hope you rock the shit out of Factions and nightfall, I look forward for all the hilarious antics to come

it's amazing how well this game stands up as a singleplayer experience today. I think I might give this a try, I'm a big fan of dragon age origins and the closest thing to it other than it's sequels is guildwars

Never played gw1, but just from looking at this video, this Game looks better (graphics, style, polish) than 90% of the MMOs out there today (obviously ignoring the big 3).
