Crossing Drake Passage

The Drake Passage is the body of water between the southern tip of South America at Cape Horn, Chile and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica. It connects the southwestern part of the Atlantic Ocean (Scotia Sea) with the southeastern part of the Pacific Ocean and extends into the Southern Ocean. The passage is named after the 16th century English privateer Sir Francis Drake, whose only remaining ship after passing through the Strait of Magellan was blown far South in September 1578 and who inferred an open connection of the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.
This video covers my turbulent crossing of the Drake Passage on my 16-day cruise on the Star Princess. Video includes announcements from Captain Edward Perrin about the weather and our schedule.
Water over Drake passage is not only energetic at top, it is equally energetic at the bottom, because it is a part of Antarctic Circumpolar Current that moves with the earth from West to East without any interruption throughout
Radhashyam Muduli. Thank you! Very informative!
So its rough then lol
All oceans are fascinating ......the Southern Ocean in particular....
To imagine how Shackleton had to traverse this tempestuous body of water in the most basic of ways......
Well thank you Captain Obvious!
The water over the drake passage is not only energetic all throughout like this man has described in his comment but it is windy and cold there as well
Someone in 2024 here..

God Bless you!!!
That's a place I would definitly want to go.
The Drake passage is one of the toughest place to navigate.
The wind from Antarctica is one reason why the waters between South America and Antarctica are so dangerous.
also currents intersection of Atlantic and Pacific
The Drake Passage and Cape Horn really are dangerous places.
Captain did a good job of sugar coating a possible bad situation.
God Bless you!!!
The skipper made the right call. With a storm coming into THE Drake Passage, you head the other direction. Run the hell away. There's nothing on earth that can compare to the Drake Shake.
Unless you are on the RMS QM2.
Fuck
"Run! Like smoke and oakum."
We all hope and believe master mariners are not fools.

I expected the captain to put up some jokes with that accent. "I'm sure you will appreciate the smoother ride. Also the fact that you will stay alive is always neat."
Sounds like a level-headed captain, unlike so many others who risk everything and everyone all for a buck.
Great job for the captain communicating with the passengers 👍👍👍👍👍
Antarctic Circumpolar Current (which is the main ocean current of Earth) passes through this narrow passage so the flow becomes turbulent and wavy.
The Drake Passage was rough when we crossed it on Celebrity. At first I thought it was fun being on a rocking ship but after a day of that it got to be annoying 🛳 🚢
I have been through that area several times. It's always a challenge.
Stop capping

I crossed the Drake Passage 4 times as a result of a storm and 2 rogue waves that hit the Prisendam. The wave built up far out back to back and hit us broadside. Above the life boats cabins had water and damage even so they were 70 ft and we had scary list because we could not right ourselves before the 2nd hit. The captain did a wonderful job of getting us away from the storm and back to Usuia for help and supplies. Lots of damage to hotel part of ship but little to the structure itself. Staff was fast is getting us back to normal. Our lunch was served in the middle of all the damage just as the waves passed over. I have traveled all over the world and never want an experience like that again. This was about 2006 and was filmed by passengers and posted to UA-cam then.
Sure it was extra exciting for all the old-timers on board.........
Hi do you have a link on that?
West Wind Drift (current) is the reason behind the turbulence in the ocean...it is known that this particular current moves tremendous volume of water, more than all world rivers combined.
Water hitting deck on a 10 story shop is insane and scary
Ocean current flow is unidirectional throughout the year over Drake passage.
It can vary a lot depending when you book, but we paid roughly £2500 each for a mini suite, cruise only, for a 17 night cruise from BA to Santiago on the Star Princess
I really wanna see the Drake's passage with my own eyes!
You an me both....
I just did 7 months ago.
We got lucky it was the Drake lake.
But still grateful to have survived with the addition of the behind the ear patches, seriously a must!
Nice perspective, i crossed the drake many times on expedition ship but never on big cruise ship and the captain plays a much different game than the small ships, they play it safe and its a good thing. The big ships are not allowed anymore down in antarctica. Imagine one of those ending up like the costa concordia. The outcome would be much worse!
Can you elaborate why it would be much worse
@@thedeathwalrus8909 Because in most part of the world, rescue is near by. Down in Antarctica, there is no rescue other than other ships, which are mostly small capacity. Not sure how to fit 3000 plus people onto a 200 passenger vessel.
@@LaMouleQuiCoule thanks for explaining. Didnt think of that
I seen one ship almost get turned parallel to wave wall
@@LaMouleQuiCoule that would make a lot of orcas happy.
Francisco de Hoces fue el primer marinero en cruzar éstas aguas 60 años antes que Drake y a esta zona se le denominó Mar de Hoces...
if anyone has experienced drake passage once, wish not to return back anymore. This was what happened to me as a seaman
oceangypsy1980 a1
What happened to you? You're still here so it must not have been too dangerous. This is something I would do multiple times.
Hehe seaman
@@danielpowers5891 you say that until you do it
Having spent a "little time" at sea and faced a "few storms" I will tell you that only an idiot would wait around to face a storm of this magnitude in either Drakes Passage or the Cape of Good Hope. I have been through storms with waves in excess of 50 feet which hit the ship with no warning and the ship heeled over and we thought it was going to capsize. I have been thru storms were we could not cook so ate nothing but sandwiches for over 3 days. During that time if you were able to hit the rack one did so. Of course I did not since I was reluctant to go below the water line to sleep so sat in the mess area almost the entire time unless I was on watch. In closing I will say again that one does not willingly go into these storms but instead does everything possible to avoid them, no matter the size of ship. The ocean can be a bitch and while its beautiful it will take you to the bottom should one make a mistake and it need not be a "big" mistake.

Have been through white squalls in the Caribbean while ocean racing , and once raced a 100 mile leg in a tropical storm...never forget it...

Crossed it 8 times on the ship I was on, scary but also amazing
Please tell more about your experience.
Marvelous journey. I love it
Wow see the picture color change at 7:78! That's so cool!
bruh
Drake passage area is not safe for sailing all over the 12 months.
Never been there, but crossed the North Atlantic in rough seas and gale force winds on RMS Queen Mary 2. Despite the conditions of wind and waves, the pitching and rolling could barely be felt mid ship.
I might be heading to Antarctica next December, but we are thinking of flying rather than going in a boat! Hopefully we can!
Dizzy Biscuit did you fly?
Oof
Welp RIP
Omg.@@wolfgangamadeusmozart932

haha... "You will not be disappointed"... that you LIVED another day. Sad that the captain has to "remind" grown adults that trip plans are contingent on the weather- breaking them down gently...oh so gently... ~ Karen

Even SADDER are the people who COMPLAIN about it...
Apparently these people would rather sail Towards a Storm and If they are Lucky to Live thru the weather they would Complain about the Rough seas!!
MYSELF..I would LOVE this weather AND the Roughest Seas Possible without actually Capsizing the Ship!!
Because I Am Crazy..Literally.

You don't say?
I to, took a peak.
how much does it cost to go for such trip?
Your life
$15000
Just the cruise alone starts about $12,000 from Chile, or Argentina. Then add the cost to get to SA. For me it was $1,000 San Jose, Cal to Santiago Chile at Christmas time.

Unlike anything I have ever seen in Indiana. Including getting pie in Shipshewana, in which similar conditions, as you may know, one may require a complete lifestyle change.
That said, the line doesn't want seasick, or, God forbid, dead, passengers, so the lawyers rule here again. But the flip side is that U.S. Courts, do not rule the world. They may want to. The Congress may want them to. But they do not. (That said, You're in the world, you're a citizen, and right now California lobbyists rule your info.)
You set sail, so to speak these days, in nearly all cases, you are at the mercy of the sea. Or you pay for the insurances.
Your heirs might wish otherwise.
I live in Elkhart
I'd do it for two million without thinking twice.
How BORING. The whole point of crossing the Drake is to experience 20ft and 30ft waves and violent winds.

Awww...I'd love to watch the strong weather, hahaha! They should make stronger ships especially to navigate around Antarctica seas!!! :D These people narrating the trip sound terribly tired and bored! :O I can understand: they are constantly repeating the same stuff over and over again, hahaha! :) Poor guys!!!
They are tired and stressed as well. Been there done that.

I rode a Jetski from Cuba to California. They wouldn't let me take it through the Panama Canal, so I took the long way. With the help of a pod of killer whales I was able to traverse the Drake.
What drugs were you on?🤪

There is nothing special about this!

RMS queen Mary 2 would just stay on course and go through they 35ft swells
Queen Mary 2 is an Ocean liner, that can traverse 80ft waves through the north Atlantic. This is a cruise ship, they generally are not made nearly as strong, hence why QM2 can do it, and this cannot.
