Crossing Drake Passage

  • Recorded February 23, 2009:
The Drake Passage is the body of water between the southern tip of South America at Cape Horn, Chile and the South Shetland Islands of Antarctica. It connects the southwestern part of the Atlantic Ocean (Scotia Sea) with the southeastern part of the Pacific Ocean and extends into the Southern Ocean. The passage is named after the 16th century English privateer Sir Francis Drake, whose only remaining ship after passing through the Strait of Magellan was blown far South in September 1578 and who inferred an open connection of the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.
This video covers my turbulent crossing of the Drake Passage on my 16-day cruise on the Star Princess. Video includes announcements from Captain Edward Perrin about the weather and our schedule.

Water over Drake passage is not only energetic at top, it is equally energetic at the bottom, because it is a part of Antarctic Circumpolar Current that moves with the earth from West to East without any interruption throughout

I crossed the Drake Passage 4 times as a result of a storm and 2 rogue waves that hit the Prisendam. The wave built up far out back to back and hit us broadside. Above the life boats cabins had water and damage even so they were 70 ft and we had scary list because we could not right ourselves before the 2nd hit. The captain did a wonderful job of getting us away from the storm and back to Usuia for help and supplies. Lots of damage to hotel part of ship but little to the structure itself. Staff was fast is getting us back to normal. Our lunch was served in the middle of all the damage just as the waves passed over. I have traveled all over the world and never want an experience like that again. This was about 2006 and was filmed by passengers and posted to UA-cam then.

Nice perspective, i crossed the drake many times on expedition ship but never on big cruise ship and the captain plays a much different game than the small ships, they play it safe and its a good thing. The big ships are not allowed anymore down in antarctica. Imagine one of those ending up like the costa concordia. The outcome would be much worse!

Having spent a "little time" at sea and faced a "few storms" I will tell you that only an idiot would wait around to face a storm of this magnitude in either Drakes Passage or the Cape of Good Hope. I have been through storms with waves in excess of 50 feet which hit the ship with no warning and the ship heeled over and we thought it was going to capsize. I have been thru storms were we could not cook so ate nothing but sandwiches for over 3 days. During that time if you were able to hit the rack one did so. Of course I did not since I was reluctant to go below the water line to sleep so sat in the mess area almost the entire time unless I was on watch. In closing I will say again that one does not willingly go into these storms but instead does everything possible to avoid them, no matter the size of ship. The ocean can be a bitch and while its beautiful it will take you to the bottom should one make a mistake and it need not be a "big" mistake.

That said, the line doesn't want seasick, or, God forbid, dead, passengers, so the lawyers rule here again. But the flip side is that U.S. Courts, do not rule the world. They may want to. The Congress may want them to. But they do not. (That said, You're in the world, you're a citizen, and right now California lobbyists rule your info.)
