- David versus Goliath, Sparta versus Persia. Real heroes from ancient times. Krieghoff’s Gun of the Year 2021 is dedicated to these heroes. Heroodotus reported 300 Spartans fought to protect their King Leonidas knowing they were outnumbered by the far superior army of the Persian Empire - and thus chose certain death. Through their heroic sacrafice, the Spartans united Greece in their decision to resist the Persians. Despite the epic 480 BC defeat at the Thermopylae Pass, victorious battles at Salamis and Plataiai turned the tide and the Greeks were victorious in the end.
A look back shows what an epoch-making event the Persian Wars were. Their historical importance to the world cannot be emphasized enough. The success that the ancient Greeks were able to achieve in defending their homeland was not only celebrated with euphoria in ancient Hellas, but also still exemplified as the triumph of freedom over tyranny to this day. „ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ'“ a phrase born from tragedy now eternally serves as inspiration to military units. „Come and Take It“ cry the brave as they defend that which is important to them. This historic phrase, engraved on the Gun of the Year top latch resonates just as loudly today.
Together with the engravers from Creative Art, Krieghoff immortalizes the Spartans' sacrifice for the freedom and the future of Europe in this year's Gun of the Year.

What a beautiful piece of high art. The Greek Hoplite soldier theme engraved on the receiver is master quality and a very good choice of theme. They were known as being one of the most intelligent, highly educated, cultured, fighting forces be it of antiquity or modern era. Then you have Kreighoff, where to even start, they have always been my favorite high end, handmade bird guns of all time. At this point in my life (38 years old) I have fully committed to traditional hunting and fishing. Recurve bows, side by side shotguns, double rifles in big bore, and even unsporterized military rifles of the late 19th to early-mid 20th century (especially the 8mm Mauser, M1, and all time the 7.5mm Swiss K-11 and K-31 Schmidt and Rueben). When it comes to fishing I’m on the fly haha. Everything from cold weather using a 2wt set up with a hares ear bead head nymphing. And bass and other game fish in the summer pulling everything from a woolly bugger to mayfly to mosquito and even other basic top water drys like a generic V wing pattern I made up. So simple I just make wing brighter as summer goes on and ad some shiny to the hook shaft like some sparkle chartreuse thread I make. Anyway pardon the fly fishing digression. Basically if you can wear pleaded wool knickers with Wellington’s shirt and tie, A wool field jacket and most importantly the almighty Derby Cap (aka newsboy, Scally, drivers, flat cap, etc.$) Then it’s a field sport I love or will love as long as that is the attire. But I do love footy, and good ol West Ham match always gets me going hahaha
