This movie was honestly quite refreshing. You don’t get a ton of movies that understand kids aren’t a monolithic population who just wanna play with blocks and finger-paint until they’re 18. This movie is very clearly about those in the early stages of adolescence. They still like boy-bands and decorating and partying, but they also are starting to have special (if not fully realized) feelings for certain people. It catches that awkward, confusing, sometimes cringey in-between phase, and it captures it in a way anyone can see. Little kids who aren’t starting adolescence will have the themes go over their head and laugh at Abby catching a dodgeball with her frigging teeth. Kids who are starting adolescence will relate to the themes and feel a little less weird knowing everyone their age goes through this. Adults will laugh because they know what those feelings turn into, and because they remember going through it themselves (particularly now, 20 years after the film’s setting, when a lot of current Pixar parents likely were going through this) I’m so glad I saw this movie. On top of being sweet, funny, and heartfelt, this movie wasn’t afraid to tell a story meant for those starting the transition from early childhood to adulthood. I’m sure there’ll be some backlash from pearl-clutching parents going “How DARE you! My teenager is too young to think about crushes! All those posters on their bedroom walls are strictly for artistic enjoyment!”. But I hope more studios start making films that, while accessible to people of all ages, are primarily for and about those in the in-betweens of life.

This movie was honestly quite refreshing. You don’t get a ton of movies that understand kids aren’t a monolithic population who just wanna play with blocks and finger-paint until they’re 18.
This movie is very clearly about those in the early stages of adolescence. They still like boy-bands and decorating and partying, but they also are starting to have special (if not fully realized) feelings for certain people. It catches that awkward, confusing, sometimes cringey in-between phase, and it captures it in a way anyone can see.
Little kids who aren’t starting adolescence will have the themes go over their head and laugh at Abby catching a dodgeball with her frigging teeth.
Kids who are starting adolescence will relate to the themes and feel a little less weird knowing everyone their age goes through this.
Adults will laugh because they know what those feelings turn into, and because they remember going through it themselves (particularly now, 20 years after the film’s setting, when a lot of current Pixar parents likely were going through this)
I’m so glad I saw this movie. On top of being sweet, funny, and heartfelt, this movie wasn’t afraid to tell a story meant for those starting the transition from early childhood to adulthood. I’m sure there’ll be some backlash from pearl-clutching parents going “How DARE you! My teenager is too young to think about crushes! All those posters on their bedroom walls are strictly for artistic enjoyment!”. But I hope more studios start making films that, while accessible to people of all ages, are primarily for and about those in the in-betweens of life.
