  • How is it possible for Tiger Woods to come back and win a Master's Championship after a spine fusion surgery??
    In this video I'll help you understand some basics of spine anatomy and why someone like Tiger Woods had a fusion done. We'll also review the range of motion of the spine and just how much Tiger's mobility was actually affected by the fusion.
    Thanks as always for watching!

      Herniation heals better than a bulge. A bulge doesn't have an annular tear and sequestration so the body doesn't recognize that there has been an injury so they often just stay. The symptoms of pain in the back and leg can go away but sometimes they don't.

      @B. L. I'm really sorry to hear that. I'm amazing, I have no pain at all and full motion. I can do whatever I want. I can get some cramps in the right back muscle along the spine but after about 10 minutes of stretching it's gone. I work full time in a cafe and have no problem at all. It has totally change my life. May I ask where you live? Do you have the ability to go to another doctor/surgeon and explain. A way can be to say that if you aren't given the surgery you need you will develop a dangerous drug addiction to the medicin that you need to function. So surgery or a dangerous drug addiction. Then they often start to listen more closely. Can work but also a dangerous tactic and the dont give you the surgery and just cut you off the medicin.

    I'm fused C4-C7. After my surgery the orderly didn't lock my gurneys when I was brought to my hospital room, my bed rolled backwards out of the room a slammed into the wall in the hallway. I had no voice yet to call for help. On my mri it looks like some of the donor bone might have fallen out and rested in my spinal fluid touching my cord. But the radiologist just refers to it as an artifact. Some assume it's a piece missed from my herniated disk. Is it possible for a piece of the donor bone to fall out like that before it's fused?

    I'm surprised you didn't mention the number one reason he had fusion, spondylolisthesis. He had the discectomy several times knowing he would eventually need fusion. He chose the discectomy first because it's quicker recovery and he could keep playing. Getting a discectomy with spondy all but guarantees you will eventually need fusion. They didn't use a plate. They used a cage. This video missed the mark on several points. An ALIF also requires back incisions for the screws and rods.

    • @jm97240
      @jm97240 Місяць тому

      The video was well stated. I haven't heard anything about Tiger having spondylolisthesis. Also, he didn't have a rod and screw system, that is the point of the ALIF. Tiger had a standalone interbody fusion device implanted where the screws go through the implant itself. The X-ray at 3:50 shows the 3 screws going through the cage into the vertebrae.
      You are right that there was no plate. There are cages that use a plate screwed into the vertebrae above and below the disc space from the front and the implant is then screwed into the plate to hold it in place but that's not what Tiger had.

    • @vzeller
      @vzeller Місяць тому

      @@jm97240 Tiger had/has spondy. Look it up. You can get an alif without rods and screws but 75 plus percent of alifs get rods and screws in the back. The purpose of the alif isn't to avoid rods and screws although that's great if you are in the very small minority that can get that. The purpose of the alif is to avoid cutting through back muscles and ligaments which is what they have to do for a tlif. The rods and screws with an alif have almost no disruption through those muscles. Instead you get your stomach muscles cut. I had ALIF with rods and screws on October 26th, 2023. I'm coming up to the one year mark and I'm almost 100 percent. I still have some stiffness in my back but it's minor. I'm an athlete so I had a fast recovery. I was back in the gym after 3 months. I met with 3 surgeons including the head surgeon at Penn. Trust me when I speak about this field.

    • @vzeller
      @vzeller Місяць тому

      @@jm97240 This guy also said Tiger had 2 levels fused when referring to the L5 and S1. Yes that's 2 vertebral bodies involved but only one disc comes out. That's ONE LEVEL fusion. This guy's terminology is incorrect all throughout this video. I'm not trying to be that guy. I'm just stating medical facts.

    • @vzeller

      @@jm97240 75 plus percent of ALIFs get rods and screws. The purpose of the ALIF is to avoid the cutting of back muscles and ligaments that the TLIF cuts. Putting in the rods and screws keeps your back in tact for the most part. Some are lucky and just get ALIF from the front but that's very rare. Of course it rips your abdominal muscles which sucks. Tiger has Spondy. Look it up. I had ALIF with rods and screws on October 26th, 2023. I'm coming up on a year and I'm almost 100 percent. I was in the gym again after 3 months. Hey doc, do you think a disc replacement would have been a better option for Woods as it would retain flexibility of the spine?

    • @bengt_axle
      @bengt_axle Рік тому +1

      Probably not. Woods had a prior surgery at that level. I think this is why they were reluctant to do an ADR. ADR gives you mobility but if your supporting ligaments and joints are incompetent, then the mobility can become a problem. As we age, our spine comes closer to fusion, as the disks dry up and we lose flexibilty. I have an ADR and it has worked well for the past 10 years or so but I can see why Woods did not get it. He does a lot of twisting in the lower back so stability is important too.

    • @DrDr-pg5br

      Yes. Although you may be susceptible to lumbar discs wearing out anyway so a fusion may not cause the adjacent disc to wear. Artificial discs do not have a lot of long term data, but if it does wear out, you undergo a regular fusion.

    • @YouTube.Algorithmic.Nonsense
      @YouTube.Algorithmic.Nonsense 4 роки тому +2

      Peter Craig It’s not going to make it worse. It feels better because traction eliminates the pressure placed on the disc and surrounding nerve roots. Traction is not likely going to fix the problem long term, but it will help with the pain short term. Best bet is to do physical therapy and stay on top of it in order to strengthen the surrounding back and core muscles that are necessary for support.
