Prabodh Chandra Dey, known by his stage name Manna Dey, was an internationally acclaimed Indian playback singer, music director, musician and Indian classical vocalist. He is considered one of the most versatile and celebrated vocalists of the Hindi film industry
Manna Dey was born on May 1, 1919 in Calcutta, Bengal Presidency, British India as Prabodh Chandra Dey. He is known for his work on Sholay (1975), Mera Naam Joker (1970) and Zanjeer (1973). He was married to Sulochana Dey. He died on October 24, 2013 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India.

@@souvikde8727 I don't think that these reports are always authentic. S.D. Burman believed that Manna Dey was fit for only intricate compositions and could not sing simple songs well. This is the reason that he very rarely used him in the Heroes' lips. It is the Shankar Jaikishan pair who used him most for the Heroes' lips and gave a number of hits. Even then Shankar lamented at the fag end of his career that we have wasted him. Even R.D. Burman used him more than his father for the heroes' lips. For example- Sita our Gita, Mehbooba, Sholey etc.

I beg to differ. Both were equally good singers. The only difference is that Mohd. Rafi got much more opportunities to playback for the heroes whereas Manna Dey was used to be utilised for songs which no other singer was capable to render to his perfection.

@@sayankumarjana5755 Oh! What a judgement! But how can you compare like that. Kishore Kumar fans can also claim that he was better because he had overthrown Md. Rafi in the 70s? You are confusing between the quality of a singer and the commercial success. I can name a number of films where Manna Dey excelled over Md. Rafi due to sheer quality. Example- Seema, Dekh Kabira Roya. Mere Hoozoor, Zindagi. Waqt, Meri Soorat Teri Aankhe etc. Opportunity matters and whenever Manna Dey got an opportunity he proved that he was no less a singer than the others. Having said that we should realise that keeping commercial success apart, all the legends were greats in their own rights and each had their strengths and weaknesses. So it is unfair to draw a comparison among them.
To be tell the truth Manna Dey didn't get what he deserves by the thankless Bollywood. Wholesale publicity for Mohd. Rafi,and maximum music composer prefer Mihd. Rafi for Top stars. Only a single song was composed for Dey Saheb. The song used to be most difficult for example Ye bhai jara dekh ke chalo,Laga chunri mein daag,Nadia chale chale re dhara, Zindagi kaisi hai Paheli, Aa ja Sanam Madhur Chandni mein...... and so many all time hits song and most tuff one Hato jao banao na batiya. My personal experience tells me that he was greatest singer but unfortunately didn't rewarded the class he actually deserves.

Manna Dey was a singer with a noted difference from other playback singers.He was the playback singer with a pure classical vocal touch and was the torch bearer of the classical music in the mainstream Hindi Commercial cinema.His songs from films were mostly based on the classical and semiclassical tunes has become the milestones of Hindi film music.His classic songs from films like Mashal(1950),Awara(1951),Do Bigha Zamin(1953),Boot Polish(1954),Shree 420,Basant Bahaar,Seema (1956),Dekh Kabeera Roya(1957),Navrang(1959),Chori Chori(1960),Kabuliwala(1961),Dil Hi To Hain(1963),Waqt(1965), Upkaar(1967),Padosan,Mere Huzoor(1968),Pagla Kahin Ka, Mera Naam Joker, Safar(1970), Anand(1971), Bawarchi(1972), Hindustan Ki Kasam,Zanjeer(1973) and Mehbooba (1976) are matchless till date and imitators were mostly unheard as well as virtually non existent for such masterpieces.
Manna Dey was classically trained but never intended to be a classical singer. It was the music directors who utilised him more for classical songs or intricate composisons and branded him in that category. It did not do any good to his career as all the good compositions used to go to Mohd. Rafi or Kishore Kumar and very few were left for him to render.

@@musicwithjj6299 It is not correct to say that Manna Dey did not get much recognition. Everybody having a musical sense recognised him as a singer par excellence. Some of the best songs of Hindi cinema were rendered by him which perhaps no other singer could have rendered to his perfection. Even the highest award in Indian cinema, 'Dada Saheb Phalke Aeard' was bestowed upon him. But he didn't get much commercial success and very few popular songs came his way. Even Lata Mangeshkar commented after his demise that he didn't get his due and deserved more.
@@MN1961M I'm not talking about the recognition among music lovers,especially classical musicians,I'm talking about the recognition which Kishore Da,Mohammad Rafi Sahab,Sanu Da,Udit ji,Alka mam,Sonu Nigam sir or today's,young generations inspiration Arijit Singh has got through their terrific performance. In a nutshell,I'm talking about the world wide acclaim. If we have an overview on His entire career,then you must have recognized that His career is very similar to the career of Mohammad Aziz Sahab. Say for example,everybody knows Kishore Kumar,Rafi Sahab,even today's youths,in West Bengal and abroad, all over India. They even know their songs Gulabi Akhe of Rafi Sahab or Pal pal dil ke pass of Kishore Da or Mera dil bhi kitna pagal of Sanu Da,but no one knows Manna Dey's that legendary song:- "Zindagi Kaisi paheli haye" of Anand film. I'm talking about out of West Bengal,people how much knows him. To be honest,almost everyone has forgotten his memorable achievement,inspite of winning so many Awards including Padma Shree,Film Fare Award,National Award,Dada Saheb Falke etc. Only,we Bangalis are well authorized regarding his biography and familiar with all of his heart touching songs. No matter today's youngsters knows him or not,that doesn't matter,he'll will be always embedded within the core of we Bengali's hearts💚and minds.🧠
@@musicwithjj6299 I don't agree. The comparison with Md. Ajiz is outrageous. Manna Dey had a career spanning for about three decades. Maybe the number of hits is less than some of his contemporaries. But if you follow the viewership of some of his famous songs, you will find that they run into several millions. Please see the viewership of Tujhe Suraj Kahun yeah Chanda, Aja Sanam Madhur Chandni Mein Hum, Pyar Hua Ikrar Hua, Tu Pyar Ka Sagar Hai, Jhanak Jhanak Tori Baje Payeliya, Poocho Na Kaise Maine, Zindegi Kaisi Hai Paheli Haye etc. The viewership of those songs are as good as the most of the retro hits. If you go through the comments section, you will find a large number of non Bengali viewers have made their comments. So it is your mis-perception that he doesn't have an all india following. Even if you view the SAREGAMAPA Final hosted in New York by Sonu Nigam, you will find the respect he commanded from the audience. Everyone stood up on his arrival on the stage and gave him ovation. Most of the Bengali population admire him for his Bengali songs and have listened to a very limited number of his Hindi songs. His Hindi songs are followed more by non Bengali listeners.

मन्नाडे दा क्लासिकल सिंगिंग में रफी साहब से बीस थे लेकिन रफी साहब भी कम नहीं थे एक महान क्लासिकल गायक ने रफी साहब की गायकी के बारे में कहा था कि जिस स्वर को उत्पन्न करने में हम 15 मिनट लगाते थे रफी साहब वहीं स्वर 3 से 5 मिनट में उत्पन्न कर देते थे, रफी साहब की गायकी भी मन्नाडे दा की तरह ही क्लासिकल बेस थी over all रफी साहब रफी साहब थे सम्पूर्ण गायकी में रफी साहब दूसरे सभी गायकों से बीस थे मन्नाडे दा ने भी एक बार कहा था कि गायकी में जो काम रफी साहब कर सकते थे वो हम नहीं दोनों महान प्रतिभाशाली क्लासिकल गायकों को शत शत नमन ।

I am hard core fan of Kishore sahab but mai jaantaa hu Manna De sahab was classically trained singer and in this field nobody can touch Manna De sahab. Although Kishore Kumar sahab was most popular singer till date but Kishore Kumar sahab had limitations but Manna De sahab had no limitations.
Rafi sahab had also no limitations but Manna De sahab was incomparable as far as classical songs concerned. 👍

मन्ना दा को शतश:प्रणाम इनके जैसा सुरमणी ना हुआ न होगा। इनका कार्यक्रम जब भुसावल रेल्वे इन्सिट्यूटमें नवरात्री पर्व पर बहुतबडे-बडे गायक-गायिका आते थे। जैसे कि लताजी, रफीजी, महेंद्र जी, मन्ना दा, हेमंत कुमारजी, शाहिर अमरशेख जी, किशोर जी सुलोचना चव्हाण जी को मैने 5बरस की थी। जबसे इन सबके कार्यक्रम मैने अपने आई- बाबाके साथ देखे है हमारे पिताजी रेल्वे मे कापेंटर हुआ करते थे। सचमं हम नसीब वाले थे जो इन्हें सुना है, देखा भी है।
