Nowadays, it's different as young people have a lot of opportunities. I believe in my people, and I believe they are going to run this country well.

I'm glad you didn't give up on Phnom Penh aka The Pearl of Asia. I love the Elephant Bar and the restaurant at the hotel - how I would run a restaurant. Every guest is treated like royalty and foods have a "wow" factor.
We are also going to the Raffles in Siem Reap and I think it’s going to be very special as it was such an important place. But I do really like that while Raffles acknowledges colonialism and you can see it in the architecture, they focus more on celebrating Khmer culture and food.
Every place in the world has its unique charm. If PP is the pearl of Asia, what's sihanoukville? Right now, cambodia has to focus on self growth and making some fundamental changes in their social belief systems and doing so on a collective level. To ensure the country doesn't stagnate and spiral deeper into a morally corrupt state.
I had originally planned to go to Sihanoukville but the overwhelming response from locals and expats here was not to bother, that it was overrun with Chinese casinos and Russian businesses, so much so that even the sexpats had moved to Kampot.
left the country back in 1979 after I had to live through the genocide under Pol Pot killing madness. Most of my family members did not survive as we were forced to move out of the Phnom Penh City in 1975 to work in the rice fields and to dig cannals. My first return trip was in 1995 when the country first opene up to the world to search for my surviving family members. I've returned to visit my sole surviving sister every year for the last ten years since my retirement from US to heal the past. It's very safe to visit Cambodia now as the country has come a long way since the prolonged civil war was officially ended in 1998. Be mindful of your surroundings . Be kind whenever possible. It's always possible as life is short to do the things we don't love doing. Happy and safe travels from a genocide survivor ✌️

I love the Raffles Le Royal hotel! I have been there many times. Did you get a chance to stop at the jewelry shop called Private Collection? They have very beautiful jewelry there. I highly recommend! Also the shop manager is so lovely, I make it a point to stop in to visit her every time I’m there

Do you always have an onward ticket when traveling in SE Asia in particular? Just wondering if some countries have given you a hard time if you didn't have a ticket set as soon as you landed for when to go. 😊
Thank you so much! So in SEA it depends on the country. Some airlines won’t even allow you on the plane without an onward ticket. Indonesia you almost always need to show an onward ticket . I’ve been asked when I’m entering immigration in Malaysia but they didn’t ask for proof. I don’t think I’ve been asked in Thailand, Cambodia or Laos but I think they know a lot of people are crossing by land. In cases where I need one but I don’t know my plans I buy an onward ticket reservation which I can show but it expires within 24 hours. I have a referral link in my video descriptions for the website I use which helps me out with a referral fee but doesn’t cost you any more money. There have been times where I just used it on the spot like getting a flight from Ecuador to Colombia they insisted I have one when I checked in so I told them I needed to find it and moved to the side and bought one that would expire to show them. I think it’s $14 and handy if you get asked for one. It’s all really up to the immigration agent too. I know others have been asked in the Philippines and Thailand so I’m always ready to buy if I need to.

Thank you so much! So I have a hypothesis about this. So if I eat any kind of white rice I get bloated and now I just avoid it because it doesn’t make me full. Alan needs a bunch of rice to feel full but previously I’ve made old fashioned overnight rolled oats for him and he got bloated. Although we all have human bodies I think we’re built differently, maybe because of introducing foods later in life? Or maybe all carbs aren’t equal because bread makes me full but rice is a waste of space I’ll just be hungry in 20 minutes.

You can haggle until it go down but most people there know that you're a tourists. If you're a tourists, it's hard to bring the price down. Ive ask my husband cousin before. They will pay for a shirt $1 or 2 dollars and at most 4 to 5 dollars. Tourists most likely pay $16 or $18 dollars. I payed 6 dollars for the shirt. Always bargain on a tuk tuk, food stalls, and mall. I went there in 2016 and it look totally different. I would love to visit there again and I hope you enjoy Cambodia. One more thing, My family member say, don't ride the taxi there.
We were quoted $5 for a shirt there and in the Russian market, but I don’t mind locals paying 1-2 as I don’t expect local prices when I travel. I have more disposable income and I’m a visitor so I should pay more. And thank you for the taxi tip. We used grab tuktuks the whole time, it was great 😊
@ayngelina They tried to charge me 18 dollars for a shirt. It's okay to pay 18 for a shirt in America. I wouldn't pay 18 dollars in Cambodia. Why? If foods are extremely cheap , clothes should be cheap too. It is okay to buy quality clothes with high prices. So you're telling me to pay double or triple for an L .V purse, foods and etc. If you're rich, you can travel. If I had to pay 15 dollars for 10 nuggets, that is expensive. If you want to pay more, go for it, but don't force people to pay. I guess America should charge visitors 2 or 3 times.I wonder who can pay and who would visit America, I wonder? If you go to Korea, would you be fine paying a corndog for 10 or 15 dollars. I think they wouldn't have tourist anymore over time. I don't want anyone to pay more than you have to. Be safe, and I hope you enjoy Cambodia.
I don’t think you should pay 2-3 times for an LV purse. But I’m saying if I pay 5 for a shirt in the market and a local, who makes much less money than me pays 1-2 I’m ok with it.

Oh thank you! I wondered if it would feel disjointed with the traditional market and history combined with luxury and fine dining. But as you know that’s what a lot of places are, steeped with history and people living many different ways. I also really like how Raffles treats the hotel by acknowledging its role in history but choosing to focus its food on traditional Khmer in fine dining rather than colonial dishes. It’s a good way to introduce people who may not be as inclined to eat coagulated blood at the market.

Be cautious with the Tuk-Tuk drivers at the Phnom Penh airport. A lot of them are crooked. I paid one once to take me to the Royal Palace as my lodging was a five minute walk away. Instead, he took me to a hotel that was about 15 minutes away from the palace hoping I would stay there so he could get a kickback. When I objected he refused to go further so I had to walk the rest of the way. He was quite nasty.
I only use Grab or other ride services when I can to avoid this. But actually the last time I flew into Siem Reap I used the Cambodian Post shuttle. It’s $8 from the airport to the post office in the middle of town, great service. In Phnom Penh we used Grab.
This happens a lot with Chinese origin dishes in South East Asia. The thick rice noodle dish in Indonesia is kwetiau and I’ve seen it in every other country and it’s either spelled differently but pronounced the same like in Malaysia or just a bit different like guay tiau in Thailand.
@ayngelina oddly enough, I found some European parallels.. in dutch, porridge is "pap", in French, "bouillie", Spanish, "papilla". In the chinese hokkien dialect, it's "ber".
yes definitely, actually we're in the Philippines right now, which has so many Spanish influences, but also many of the words here are very similar or the same to Indonesian. I don't know if it's because in the 16th century the King of the Philippines was from West Sumatra, before the Spanish, or a different reason. But one of my favorite things about food and language is seeing how it travels from country to country.
@ayngelina It could be many reasons.. another one is the shared linguistic heritage of both the Philippines and Indonesia. Tagalog and Javanese, the two main languages spoken in those respective countries, both belonging to the austronesian family of languages. In addition to the historic royal connection, I'd imagine them sharing many basic archaic root words as well. But yes, food and languages will find their way in other parts of the world as long as human interaction, participation and desire for sharing aren't disrupted.
Love crab! but not with the hard shells it is just so messy to eat with fingers. Yea, congee and more of it, it helps the body to recover as it is a easily digestible food form.
So my home in Canada is famous for lobster and I much prefer it over crab because it’s less work more meat. But also cold water lobster tastes better so when traveling I’m open to whatever they have but it does always cross my mind that crab is such a pain. Nevertheless I’m looking forward to more crab!
No but we almost went to Sri Lanka instead of the Philippines this month. I want to go there soon, I need to check the weather in SEA because I go back to Canada mid July for a month to visit my family and then back end of August to travel to December. I’m so conflicted by Sri Lanka for the first time or to go back up through Thailand to Chiang Rai and take the slow boat back to Luang Prabang to see Laos in better weather then northern Vietnam
@@ayngelina Have a think about Sri Lanka. We had perfect blue (low humidity) and CLEAR skies with no haze when we visited in late Oct/Nov. The highlands, especially Nuwara Eliya at 2000meters above sea level can be chilly at night with temps dropping to 9-10C. The food is another thing to consider - lots of vegetarian/vegan options and very innovative styles of cooking. IMHO much less spices are used compared to Indian cooking.
Authentic Khmer food will not be delicious and not appetizing after Khmers like to imitate Thai food. and adjust the recipe according to Thai food So I was able to eat some.Like Aunt Roger said, Khmer food is a shit version of Thai food. 🥰🥰🥰
I’m glad you liked Phnom Penh, yeah the city definitely has changed for good because I just went last month and I was also surprised how much it has changed. So much foods, good transportation, cheap accommodation, and the local can also speak English pretty good so we don’t have to struggle with Khmer language. So, all and all, Cambodia 2024 is amazing. Siem Reap is also the best city to visit, u wouldn’t want to miss Siem Reap or sehanukville koh rong, kep kompot so much to see and do. Anyways, thanks for sharing your positive experiences in PP.
Siem Reap is up after Phnom Penh then Kampot Kep, I a skipping Sihanoukville because I heard it’s now Chinese casinos and sec tourism. Do you think it’s a mistake to skip?
@@ayngelinaDespite Sihanoukeville being a chinese ghost town. The city is actually more clean and organized than Phnom Penh. The beaches are nice and clean. I actually like Sihanoukeville than Phnom Penh to be honest with you. The sunset in Sihanoukeville is the best part

Thank you so much! So I have a hypothesis about this. So if I eat any kind of white rice I get bloated and now I just avoid it because it doesn’t make me full. Alan needs a bunch of rice to feel full but previously I’ve made old fashioned overnight rolled oats for him and he got bloated.
Although we all have human bodies I think we’re built differently, maybe because of introducing foods later in life? Or maybe all carbs aren’t equal because bread makes me full but rice is a waste of space I’ll just be hungry in 20 minutes.

Well I think it was really my fault. I was young and now that I'm older I can really appreciate Cambodia.
You can haggle until it go down but most people there know that you're a tourists. If you're a tourists, it's hard to bring the price down. Ive ask my husband cousin before. They will pay for a shirt $1 or 2 dollars and at most 4 to 5 dollars. Tourists most likely pay $16 or $18 dollars. I payed 6 dollars for the shirt. Always bargain on a tuk tuk, food stalls, and mall. I went there in 2016 and it look totally different. I would love to visit there again and I hope you enjoy Cambodia. One more thing, My family member say, don't ride the taxi there.
We were quoted $5 for a shirt there and in the Russian market, but I don’t mind locals paying 1-2 as I don’t expect local prices when I travel. I have more disposable income and I’m a visitor so I should pay more.

@ayngelina They tried to charge me 18 dollars for a shirt. It's okay to pay 18 for a shirt in America. I wouldn't pay 18 dollars in Cambodia. Why? If foods are extremely cheap , clothes should be cheap too. It is okay to buy quality clothes with high prices. So you're telling me to pay double or triple for an L .V purse, foods and etc. If you're rich, you can travel. If I had to pay 15 dollars for 10 nuggets, that is expensive. If you want to pay more, go for it, but don't force people to pay. I guess America should charge visitors 2 or 3 times.I wonder who can pay and who would visit America, I wonder? If you go to Korea, would you be fine paying a corndog for 10 or 15 dollars. I think they wouldn't have tourist anymore over time. I don't want anyone to pay more than you have to. I don’t think you should pay 2-3 times for an LV purse. But I’m saying if I pay 5 for a shirt in the market and a local, who makes much less money than me pays 1-2 I’m ok with it.
@@ayngelina I know it's cheap paying 5 or 6 doallrs. Japan is planning it or doing the double price for foreigners. I think this would be me last trip to Japan(in October), if I do go. Have fun on your trip.

Oh thank you! I wondered if it would feel disjointed with the traditional market and history combined with luxury and fine dining. But as you know that’s what a lot of places are, steeped with history and people living many different ways.
I also really like how Raffles treats the hotel by acknowledging its role in history but choosing to focus its food on traditional Khmer in fine dining rather than colonial dishes. It’s a good way to introduce people who may not be as inclined to eat coagulated blood at the market.

Be cautious with the Tuk-Tuk drivers at the Phnom Penh airport. A lot of them are crooked. I paid one once to take me to the Royal Palace as my lodging was a five minute walk away. Instead, he took me to a hotel that was about 15 minutes away from the palace hoping I would stay there so he could get a kickback. When I objected he refused to go further so I had to walk the rest of the way. He was quite nasty.
I only use Grab or other ride services when I can to avoid this. But actually the last time I flew into Siem Reap I used the Cambodian Post shuttle. It’s $8 from the airport to the post office in the middle of town, great service.
In Phnom Penh we used Grab.

Porridge in indonesian is bubur...in khmer its babar. Interesting...
This happens a lot with Chinese origin dishes in South East Asia. The thick rice noodle dish in Indonesia is kwetiau and I’ve seen it in every other country and it’s either spelled differently but pronounced the same like in Malaysia or just a bit different like guay tiau in Thailand.
@ayngelina oddly enough, I found some European parallels.. in dutch, porridge is "pap", in French, "bouillie", Spanish, "papilla". In the chinese hokkien dialect, it's "ber".
yes definitely, actually we're in the Philippines right now, which has so many Spanish influences, but also many of the words here are very similar or the same to Indonesian. I don't know if it's because in the 16th century the King of the Philippines was from West Sumatra, before the Spanish, or a different reason.
But one of my favorite things about food and language is seeing how it travels from country to country.
@ayngelina It could be many reasons.. another one is the shared linguistic heritage of both the Philippines and Indonesia. Tagalog and Javanese, the two main languages spoken in those respective countries, both belonging to the austronesian family of languages. In addition to the historic royal connection, I'd imagine them sharing many basic archaic root words as well. But yes, food and languages will find their way in other parts of the world as long as human interaction, participation and desire for sharing aren't disrupted.
Love crab! but not with the hard shells it is just so messy to eat with fingers. Yea, congee and more of it, it helps the body to recover as it is a easily digestible food form.
So my home in Canada is famous for lobster and I much prefer it over crab because it’s less work more meat. But also cold water lobster tastes better so when traveling I’m open to whatever they have but it does always cross my mind that crab is such a pain. Nevertheless I’m looking forward to more crab!
@@ayngelina Have you tried Sri Lanka's famous mud crabs? The flesh is meaty and sweet and don't become dry from overcooking.
No but we almost went to Sri Lanka instead of the Philippines this month. I want to go there soon, I need to check the weather in SEA because I go back to Canada mid July for a month to visit my family and then back end of August to travel to December. I’m so conflicted by Sri Lanka for the first time or to go back up through Thailand to Chiang Rai and take the slow boat back to Luang Prabang to see Laos in better weather then northern Vietnam
@@ayngelina Have a think about Sri Lanka. We had perfect blue (low humidity) and CLEAR skies with no haze when we visited in late Oct/Nov. The highlands, especially Nuwara Eliya at 2000meters above sea level can be chilly at night with temps dropping to 9-10C. The food is another thing to consider - lots of vegetarian/vegan options and very innovative styles of cooking. IMHO much less spices are used compared to Indian cooking.

Authentic Khmer food will not be delicious and not appetizing after Khmers like to imitate Thai food. and adjust the recipe according to Thai food So I was able to eat some.Like Aunt Roger said, Khmer food is a shit version of Thai food. 🥰🥰🥰

I’m glad you liked Phnom Penh, yeah the city definitely has changed for good because I just went last month and I was also surprised how much it has changed. So much foods, good transportation, cheap accommodation, and the local can also speak English pretty good so we don’t have to struggle with Khmer language. So, all and all, Cambodia 2024 is amazing. Siem Reap is also the best city to visit, u wouldn’t want to miss Siem Reap or sehanukville koh rong, kep kompot so much to see and do. Anyways, thanks for sharing your positive experiences in PP.
Siem Reap is up after Phnom Penh then Kampot Kep, I a skipping Sihanoukville because I heard it’s now Chinese casinos and sec tourism. Do you think it’s a mistake to skip?

I’ve been to Phu Quoc so the other Cambodian islands are definitely intriguing if I can make them work in my budget.
