Chris, thanks for an interesting discussion on a very complicated subject. Here are three significant items for additional discussions. Gold is very heavy, and big pieces don't travel far from their sources. Instead, gold moves downward and not outward from those sources. Therefore, gold can be rounded in many ways. Consider not just the rounding of gold in streams, 1. Shape of gold takes place in the vein itself at crystallization. 2. Gold rounds as the mountain erodes at the source downward vertically. A vein is uplifted and tumbled by erosion for thousands of feet downward vertically in profile as the mountain is itself worn down. 3. Much coarse gold is found in breccia pipes. Tumbling and rounding of gold occurs in place vertically as a result of the process of pipe formation. Mother Nature is indeed very complicated...
Very informative video. A lot of people talk about the shape, the roundness of the pieces found and if your close or far from the source. But your new camera and your knowledge takes it to a new level. “Get out their and find some Gold”
I was tracing some gold..... Right up to a hand dug 20ft deep adit or tunnel 700ft up a hill side.. Was bummed, but showed I had learned how to do it. Cheers to you and your book!
I've been doing it for 5 months and haven't found much just a little microscopic dust. I'm in the mojave rosamond area. But I bought your book so I have a good start and a good attitude. Heading to Randsburg area next week!
So how do we find a source if you know it came from a ancient channel. But the gold is very very rough and so far my pocket has produced just under 70 grams of super rough specimen gold all the way to 200 mesh amalgam
I have not watched this yet but I saw the title on my suggestions list and I love the concept like your gold had a life far far away - where was it born and how far did it travel ?- I'm not enamored by Gold at all - but I do respect it - I've got old early 80's computer connectors that are Gold and they live on forever even in a humid basement still shining away
Lots of gold in my area comes from slickensides and in wires. Already flattened by natural processes. I think the gold gets ‘cut’ by sharp rocks during erosion, as I’m finding that the average placer piece is smaller than the lode.
Hi i have recently been metal detecting and found some nuggets in a dried up river bed at first i thought it was led but when i got home and inspected it further i could see gold coulur but to look at the nuggets they look silver i have tested them with my electronic gold tester and it comes up gold i had never heard off electrum before but sure this is what it is they are some funky shapes is thair market for this sort of thing
Love this channel. Question for you Chris. I live in davenport iowa and the mississippi river runs through there and duck creek as well. Do I have a chance at gold in or around davenport or bettendorf iowa. I use a minelab equinox 800. Thank you for great content. Thomas
My apologies, but I do not know the gold content of every river, creek and stream in the USA. Take a look at my video on Midwest gold. See: ua-cam.com/video/lJoRt5Un9SE/v-deo.html Gold in the Midwest is associated with glacial moraines that came down from Canada. I have a map of these in the video. Midwest gold tends to be small - pickers are rare. Most prospectors in the Midwest use pans, sluices and high bankers to process gravel and catch the gold. Almost no one uses metal detectors in the Midwest because the size of the gold is mostly too small to be seen with a metal detector.
I know the reef is there. I've dug heaps of species. Rough ,sharp gold. But also finding a lot of well rounded gold next to the reef. No sign of rounded rocks. Lots of different colour clays. Could I be getting gold that didn't come from the reef, that is older than the reef. Like an ancient river. But no rounded rocks.
Knowing the past geology of your area based on a couple sentences - that's not possible. I have not the slightest guess of your exact situation. , as I said in the video, some gold comes out of the ground rounded. River worn gold travels with river worn rocks. You say you see no sign of rounded rocks.
Of course there is vertical displacement - movement too, so I suppose it's safe to assume that an ancient bed full of sea fossils and gold up at 11,000' MSL....👈✌️
I have a question for you after I say I love your videos. You are very helpful and I appreciate them very much. So. I've found 3 nice pickers that are round on the top and flat on the bottom. Like a dome. Why is one side round and the other flat??
After seeing the first photos I'm a little concerned. The other day out in the gold base and I found a 4.5 g nugget that has the texture of 80 grit sandpaper. My thought was the quartz broke away and it never moved. I only hunt BLM but a hundred yards away from where I found this piece is private property which is upstream. I like my theory better than the prospect that the quartz vein is out of reach. A few years ago I did hit a pocket approximately 20 to 22 oz of gold came out it. After four days on my hands and knees I couldn't walk anymore sat back and let other people enjoy it. I got approximately 10 oz.
Hello Chris I love your channel and thanks for the wealth of knowledge! Question: if your finding gold in hard clay like a mountain side full of red clay does that mean no one else has been their?
Does the very small pieces break away from ore to form placer deposits just like gold from a quartz vein does? I’m finding very small pieces in a branch and im wondering if there’s bigger pieces in the area and I’m just in the wrong spot Or it was just originally small pieces from the host. I’m a newbie and I’m also on the east coast. 😅thanks for your videos they have helped me find the little bit that I have found so far.
mist of the gold i find is all smoothed over. ,i know were theres open territory. but to dam hot. open area is by barstow. ,soon it will cool down go look for gold. been at the beach with my equinox 700. 👍👍👍 have. a good day.
Thanks for all your videos! I have the lower end, I am not too happy with quality. Seems equivalent to a Smithsonian kidscope. I will checkbyiur link to see what kind of satisfaction guarantee they have.
Thankyou for showing us how to find gold in the raw.???😊 ❤... your first show of gold is what gold look's like in georgia...,and yes you'r right about the source is very close...!😂❤. My best time to look for gold is in the winter month's when nobody else is around and it's very peaceful, yet nice to have a nice campfire, yet very small.!!!🎉😊❤ Thank You Chris, you are a really great teacher, even for a 69 year old man trying to find gold in georgia...😮😂❤
Interesting! So far I've found zero gold with my metal detector but by checking small metal pieces I've found with a usb microscope determined one of of them was a meteorite fragment
@@ChrisRalph Is there any rock corrosion at the bottom of the ocean, or gold stays within the rock all the time ? I was just wondering, how much untapped gold must be at the buttom of the ocean and how we can reach it. Thank you for your answer. I enjoy your videos.

Randsburg is way better for placer gold. Rosamond was a hard rock mining area. Randsburg was good for both.
So how do we find a source if you know it came from a ancient channel. But the gold is very very rough and so far my pocket has produced just under 70 grams of super rough specimen gold all the way to 200 mesh amalgam
I see from your other comment that you did get your answer.
@@ChrisRalph yeah gary cleaned my amalgam for me and he said I should start searching the hill side

Gold resists corrosion and endures.

Great video! If you want to find more gold I highly recommend the book, 'Fists Full of Gold'. It is a wealth of information and well worth the price.
Thank you for the kind words and recommendation!
I have a question for you after I say I love your videos. You are very helpful and I appreciate them very much. So. I've found 3 nice pickers that are round on the top and flat on the bottom. Like a dome. Why is one side round and the other flat??
could be they formed that way or perhaps they stayed put while gravel flowed over the top.
Gold or anything traveling in the bottom of moving water. With sand and gravel, will likely have fine scratches all over it!
Yes, sometimes the scratches are very fine.
After seeing the first photos I'm a little concerned. The other day out in the gold base and I found a 4.5 g nugget that has the texture of 80 grit sandpaper. What about any other gold from that site? One piece tells a part of the story - does all the gold from that spot look the same?
Hello Chris I love your channel and thanks for the wealth of knowledge! Question: if your finding gold in hard clay like a mountain side full of red clay does that mean no one else has been their?
maybe - from that kind of super vague description, hard to say. Red clay is pretty common, gold is rare.
Does the very small pieces break away from ore to form placer deposits just like gold from a quartz vein does? Given the vague and general description, I am not sure what your situation actually is.
In this video you said the quartz that’s still attached to the gold will break away as it travels. Does gold from ore do the same?
yes.
