Chicago 1920s: BANG BANG BANG
Chicago 2020s: BANG BANG BANG
One thing about old mafia types - they were all impeccably dressed!!
Everyone was even the paperboy had a suit on
To this present day because they have respect for themselves and Italian culture
And I like the long overcoat they wore.
Very true,
@@MARIANSCATLIFFE they sure didn't have respect for Italian women when they pimped them out in their brothels.
A decent pot boiler of a gangster movie. Quite a few "movie stars to be" played supporting roles, like Brad Dilman and Jack Nicholson.
Jason Robards really chewed the scenery as an over the top Alphonse Capone.
Thanks for posting this movie !
Also Joan Shawlee as the prostitute with John Candy brilliant and funny
This is classic!!! I had a copy of this on vhs back in day and watched it million times!!!
My uncle ran the projector for this movie at the Hollywood Bijou in downtown Oatmeal, Ohio. He thought Fred and Ethel were communists.
In the past, critics viewed Roger Corman's work as "camp" and as B movies. Today's generation largely views his work as genuine art. I always loved his movies back in the day and greatly appreciate that so many in the current generation views his works in the same way I always did.
I can't believe I came across this! It is hard to find on dvd. I've looked a long time. THANKYOU!
I really enjoy the performances of Jason Robards and George Segal. Two aces that seem like gangsters to me!
If you’re from Chicago or the surrounding areas you know how accurate this movie is. Moran is every bit the intellect compared to his animated counterpart Capone. All the victims are given believable reasons as to how they got lined up. And the narrator is amazing because he’s always there, explaining each characters ultimate legacy.
It’s a shame this film is as underrated as it is. Definitely on the list of must watch films that take place in the Windy City.
Paul Frees masterful voice as the narrator made the movie.
Bruce Dern had such a small part in this film but he did it just great.
One of the best gangster movies made, my favourite. Though it is a true crime dramatization really. Great cast but the real stars are the props and sets and costumes. All period correct cause they were still in use at the time.
Great music. Especially the out-of-tune Charleston rag piano piece at the beginning. Definitely sets the tone.
R.I.P To Some Of The Actors In This Movie,Who Are No Longer With Us 😢
More and more movie greats are, everyday , disappearing :{
@@DBEdwards I Know,So 😢
Great Performances By Everyone In This Movie 👍
One of the most underrated gangster movies ever made.
Not for real movie lovers.
Hearing Paul Frees' no nonsense narration, you wouldn't know this is the same voice actor for Boris Badenov in the "Rocky and Bullwinkle" cartoons.
Best monologue:
Talkin' about stayin' alive!
I Haven't Seen This Movie In A Long Time,Thanks For Putting This On UA-cam 😊
‘On the last morning of his life’ that bit gave me chills. Even though you could say it was a ‘spoiler’ I think it worked..
Just think they were doing whatever it was that they were doing before they were murdered. The guy that was talking to his mother, it is sad think whatever
words that was actually spoken by him will
the last she will ever
hear.
Paul Frees, narrator, was one of the two "man of a thousand voices" for cartoons, the other being Mel Blanc. He was Boris Badenov (Bad Enough?) of Rocky and Bullwinkle.
Back when Chicago was safe
Yeh !....It was safe unless you were standing in front of a machine gun ! ! !.........I loved watching these old movies at the local theatres in the 1940's and 50's and the price was 50 CENTS or less.....
@@normanwyatt8761 That's just a matter of choosing your friends wisely and avoiding those guys walking in groups carrying violin cases. Going to a local theater to see a good movie used to be enjoyable but there hasn't been anything worth seeing for me in a few years now.
@@jimdep6542 I can understand about the movies nowadays, 'CAUSE all the newest flicks on cable contain Naked sex and every other word begins with an " F "......... I'm beyond that being 88 and going on 89 years of age.....
The surroundings and things like automobiles are so authentic for the period where this is action is portrayed!
That psychopathic stare that George Segal gives Nick Sorello while Hyer counts out the money is a real good touch. I've been on the receiving end of exactly that same stare while sueing someone in the courthouse. I won that suit but the guy didn't pay. About a year later his enemies shot him dead in his own house.
The individuals whom ever shot him it's called patients.
Roger Corman's first big budget movie! And a great one! But the studio execs didn't trust him, and they interfered constantly during the filming. So much so, in fact, that Corman never made another big budget film, preferring to go back to the freedom of low budget B movies.
Thanks pointy...
Watch the movie and shut up
Corman was hated he took major advantage of musicians who didn't realize they should have gotten residuals and would have made a lot of money but because Corman knew he was taking advantage he never put it in their contracts

Saw this at the Drive In in the late 60s. That narrator sure sounds familiar..- Rocky and Bullwinkle Show! Paul Frees. Had to look that up- to make a sure!!
Anyone recognize Bruce Dern? " I'm just the mechanic" or something like that
The ghost host himself.
@@sesfilmsllc that's right! I forgot what Laura Dern interview I read but she said her mother was in a film when she was pregnant with her!
Watch Gloria, believe that actress is her mom.@@familydogg1234
I guess I get to be the first to acknowledge legendary One Life to Live actor Clint Ritchie.
Jack Nicholson has a small uncredited role in this! "Garlic, if the bullets dont kill you, you die of the blood poison!"
What a classic movie I've enjoyed this for years .
When style was in: clothes, cars ✔️
What an amazing film! Thank you DDF!
Pretty imaginative with the facts in this one right from the start. The massacre actually happened in a garage in an alley.
Yes see my comment, we were there two years before demolition of SMC Cartage Co
The costume department earned their f’n paychecks on this flick - bravo.
Why do they have to be "f'n" paycheks? Does the addition of profanity make your comment any stronger? Does it allow the reader to understand the word "Paycheck" better? Or is it that you just don't have any class?
Something I always wondered: Are the scenes in "The Blues Brothers" (set in Chicago) where everyone emerges from rubble and quietly brushes off the dust and debris an "homage" to the big restaurant hit scene in this film?
The fight between Pete and his moll over the fur coat is about the best live action cartoon I've ever seen. This film is so full hair-brained enthusiasm. There was a period between Bonny and Clyde 1967 and Godfather 1972,
Watching this on valentine's day!
Same!
2 days late but better late than never! Watch it once a year. ❤
A holiday tradition for me for over 42 years.
Gangsters invented the drive-bye shootings!😊
Love the cars!
The police car was cool
Forget the acting! The gun play was awesome! Love this movie go this day
Great Performances By Everyone In This Movie 👍 & Great Cameo By Jack Nicholson
As a kid too young to drive my buds and i were on the Clark st bus to Cubs game. We jumped off at 2122 and knocked on front door.
No answer, ran into alley and pushed open the unlocked rear door. I stepped in and a grumpy old guy yelled what you want?
Can we see where the gangsters were shot. No he roared and slammed the door shut. But i stood inside for a few moments. “ wow” I remember thinking
Great movie
that fight sense over that fur coat was crazy. X)))
she was fighting for that coat.
lol
I would consider this movie a classic. The days of real movies are few
The modern day Chicago 😂😂😂😂 now I see where it all started 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
A few cast members from this film are still alive --- but of the SEVEN actors who played the Massacre victims, only Bruce Dern is still with us (as of April 2024).
Milton Frome (February 24, 1909 - March 21, 1989); ADAM HEYER
Kurt Kreuger (July 23, 1916 - July 12, 2006); JAMES CLARK
Mickey Deems (April 22, 1925 - April 14, 2014); REINHARDT SCHWIMMER
David Canary (August 25, 1938 - November 16, 2015); FRANK GUSENBERG
Joseph Campanella (November 21, 1924 - May 16, 2018); ALBERT WEINSHANK
George Segal (February 13, 1934 - March 23, 2021); PETER GUSENBERG
Bruce Dern (June 4, 1936 -); JOHN MAY
Don’t forget jack Nicholson, he is in here too and is alive.
@@richie9308 Yes, he is, but I was just listing the 7 actors who played the Massacre victims.
Mayor Daley ordered the garage torn down in '67. The site remains haunted to this day. Stand in front of 2122 N. Clark street and you'll experience a sensation in the upper chest.
As for the wall with bullet holes...It's located in the Las Vegas Mob Museum.
Been to the site twice 1992 and 95 walked around on the grass trying to take it in ,i had read that it was haunted but I never felt anything. But I’m a believer in that type of stuff .Apparently the building next door is said to have some weird goings on it makes you wonder for sure.
The crazy thing is that all these gangsters were in their 20s
If you ask me this is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen emphasize I like movies in this kind of setting anyways
Loved this movie. first saw it when I was about 14. Still entertaining
A TIMELESS CLASSIIC. GREAT CAST OF AÇTORS
Cast is a who's who of well known character actors.
Robards is probably the only 'A' lister here the rest are essentially character actors who had been all over tv and movies.
My favorite actor, Paul Richards, is Charles frishetti in this movie.
I don't think anyone here is still living with the exception of Valerie Perrine and Bruce dern. Joe turkel died not long ago. And Segal died year before last.
David canary has died recently as well.
I watched this so many times
Same Here
I love this movie 💯💯💯💯💯💯😎
Men knew hw 2 dress in that era. Three piece suits and hats.😊
Every Valentine’s Day WGN channel 9 would show this movie , but stopped because someone complained that it was making the Italians people look bad.
I'm not sure if I'd seen this one before? Maybe in the '70's, I've seen many others though. See the older actors on here, I love old movies!
Classic! Only one I've seen. I remember my grandpa watching it when I was a kid lol.
Capone was born in Brooklyn..not Italy.
I didn't know Al Capone was tall, slim and had a full head of hair.
Because he was not
Ben Gazzara , was the best at playing Al Capone .
Right. Jason Robards probably captured the personality, but definitely not the look.
The Boardwalk Empire little English blond guy is even worse!
He wasn't slim, but a real fatso. I seem to recall hearing someone saying that Capone was 5'10" (not really short) but I don't know if Capone really was that tall
WGN in Chicago used to play this on Valentines Day until the Italian community protested over the image of Italians as gangsters.
WOWW I NEVER KNEW THIS, AND UR RIGHT, CHANNEL 9 DID USE TO SHOW THIS EVERY YEAR ON THAT DAY...
Which is silly because anyone from Chicago knows that Capone's gang wasn't mafia, nor Italian specific.
Yep, I watched it every year.
This look of this film seems exactly like an extended version of Star Trek's" A Piece of the Action" episode.
Exactly! That's throwing me off too. Seems kinda fake in spite of the period cars, etc.
I was thinking of The Untouchables TV show
Pretty sure this is HD wide-screen 1.85:1 and Blu-ray. Great film.
Next to the godfather this was perhaps one of the greatest gangster movies of all time along with once upon a Time in America and Scarface I love Jason robards portrayal of Al Capone and this is me and my wife's favorite all-time holla
Try watching
New York Confidential
It is a great movie made even greater by the fact that they knew almost nothing about organized crime when it was made!
Jason Robard's performance wasn't bad but he was much too old for this role, Capone was only 30 years old when this took place. Still the best thing Roger Corman ever did!
Let's not get carried away
Every gangster dressed very well all the time. The poor people dressed as best they could but they couldn't outclass the gangsters so
😊😊
Class all the way
Instant classic

THIS NEVER GETS OLD - GREAT STORY OF CORRUPTION / MURDER / AND WHY WE MUST NOT LET THE CRIMINALS GET AWAY WITH IT
My mother and her brother witnessed an attempted hit when they were kids in south Philly in the early 30’s !
This was Roger Corman's first big budget movie, and it's obvious here that he had the talent. But the studio execs didn't trust him, and almost drove Corman insane with their constant demands. As a result, Corman swore he would never make another big studio, big budget movie. And he never did.
Stop KNOCKING this movie as one great reason for viewing is all the UNTOUCHABLES tv series actors that are here= RICHARDS*STONE*BAKALAYN*TURKEL*and veteran LEO GORDON☆☆☆☆
Thank you for this message ❤ I really needed it at this moment. I listened to someone's video and got somewhat angry and dissapointed. I realised that I allowed myself to be pulled down in my vibration. So really thank you for this timely message. Blessings
Most ppl who have seen this don't like Jason robards Capone, but I think its s great one. Its unlike any other, he puts in the effort. Even if it seems over the top at times.
I am one of the one them. Some serious overacting was directed in this film, including George Segal. But of course the film was an historical dramatic film.
I like Robard's' portrayal of Capone in this flick. This is a movie, not a dry old history book. It's SUPPOSED to be exciting and entertaining, not just dry facts. Robards hiding behind the bodyguard after the attack in the restaurant scene is almost comical. In other scenes he's a blazing psychotic, or a shrewd businessman. I say, "well done Mr. Robards". RIP.
Before STL vs O Block in the 2020s....there was The Outfit vs The North Side Mob in the 1920s...
Some things in Chicago never change.
11111111111111¹11¹¹1
the difference is tht the outfit vs north side mob was more organized dressed better, had better taste in life, this new oblock stuff is a bunch of kids with twisties in their hair with skinny tight jeans killing each other with no structure or purpose for no reason stupid
@@stevenfilizzola5986 it's all the same. Lol people always try to act like the mafia were some street demigods and could do no wrong.
They were nothing more than gangbangers and pimps in suits. How many people died from poisoned alcohol because the gangsters were cutting it with formaldehyde? How many young women were brutalized and raped in al Capones brothels? You forget 1920s gangsters were some of the biggest sex traffickers of young girls right? Jazz musician's hated gangsters always lounging around at their shows fucking with people and starting shootouts. Innocent businessmen had their establishments bombed terrorist style by greedy mobsters or were murdered out right.
You have a very misguided view of gang members from the 1920s.
You see or hear about King Von doing 20 car drive bys with machine guns or raping young girls?
Wasn't as simple as Capone vs. north side. There was Spike O'Donnell, Joe Saltis, the west side O'Donnell's. Allegiances swung back and forth. Saltis and Weiss were about to merge as a Polish force, Weiss was helping Saltis beat a murder charge when Weiss was killed. Saltis was a partner of Frank McErlane, but Frank was in prison and Saltis had no muscle against Spike O'Donnell on the South side. Many don't know how close Capone was with Weiss and O'Banion.
@@stevenfilizzola5986 it's the same shit 🤣🤣🤣
It's a good movie 👍,
They should do a remake of this classic movie if they didn't already just saying 🎉❤
Amazingly the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre didn't change much except focus more Law Enforcement heat on the gangster. Capone went to prison in 1931 ending his six year reign. Moran did not disappear from Chicago due to the massacre. The North Side Gang under Moran did not receive it's death blow until the repeal of prohibition four years later and then it lost it's gambling interests in 1935 to the National Crime Syndicate and faded away, which also operated Murder Inc. into the late 1940's. Then the NCS sort of faded away as the Italian mafia took over much of organized crime. Moran apparently did not save any money and turned to a life of petty crime and spent most of it in prisons. He died in 1957 at 63.
😮😮
Jason Robards was gorgeous. And an amazing performance in the board room scene. 😮❤
This is another great movie.
RIP Roger Corman
Robards capote was brilliant portrayal of a very twisted man
Nothing compared to the violence of today.
67 YR OLD STONER FAN OF ROCKY & BULWINKLE!
Yes!The great Paul Frees,of many voices and cartoons is the first voice we here in this classic ‼️‼️🧐
Excellent movie
capone was much younger guy, was only 30 during valentine massacre
He looked about 20 years older
complete miscast...looks nothing like him full stop
One of my favorite movies of the genre; but Jason Robards’ turn of Capone was more a caricature of Edward G. Robinson as a gangster.
Guy who played Al capone i felt like he exactly same even the Voice! 💯Scars the way smokes Cigar the way he skinny before like Al capone was young
Who gives af if Robards is skinny he’s a f’n boss in this movie and plays the hell out of it. I was skeptical of the casting at first viewing too but realized back then you had to put a performance in a little amount of time they didn’t have the DeNiro luxury of having a whole year to prepare for a role. You had your best actor play the complex role simple as that
capone was mean in real life i but i dont like this movie at all
This is a good movie but the only one who could play the part of AL Capone was Nevil Brand in the Untouchables TV Series
Also Stephen Graham did a great job in Boardwalk Empire
Tom Hardy ?
Rod Steiger.
I would have preferred Ernest Borgnine or Simon Oakland, someone who looked the part
Just how accurate is this movie to history
For starters the actor couldn’t look any less like Al Capone. In real life he was only about 3 yrs older then Jack McGurn
@@masterskooma4873looks have little to do with history I'm talking about the facts like the one guy did he really take the ring off his dead mother finger to sell it and spend the rest of his life as a thief and a murder , and the other guy did he really kill everyone that was responsible for killing his father by the time he was 20
@@danielfegley2735Al Capone is a real historical figure so how he’s portrayed does effect the accuracy of the movie… at least in my opinion
Joe Aiello was murdered in 1930 by machine gunners in an apartment building in Chicago on orders from Joe Masseria. Capone was just his Capo for Chicago at the time of the massacre
Never saw this movie but Chicago was gangland then with the Irish/Italians.
This movie scared me as a kid In the 60s.
1:25:36 a Jack Nicholson cameo.
Also 1:04 he 1st appears.
This is a good one
Looks nothing like Capone, Capone was heavily built and half his age.
as bad as that was, it pales compared to the blacks killings of other blacks in Philadelphia. It happens every day, especially on the weekends. The Media downplays those events. JMO
Capone was from Naples Italy but born in New York city lucky luchino was from cicaly
All cast well acting:; as :; Real !👍😎😆😀😎
