I love Leon to buy shoes, but I don't go to the market, instead there is a mall of shoes called Plaza Mulza where you can jump on a little train to visit every store of the mall. You can spend a few hours seeing brands and putting shoes all the time.

We go to Loen quite often, my wife does business there every few months. The church you showed at the half way point is wonderful. If you had walked around the backside, you can go under it. The underside is a catacomb. It is beautiful. Also across the street, there is an ice cream shop with incredible ice cream.
If you are still in the Leon area and would like to visit a cool small town in Jalisco, check out San Diego de Alejandría, Jalisco. It's about 40min from Leon. I now live near Dallas now but my early childhood memories are from San Diego. Thank you for all of those great videos about Mexico. Keep it up!

Welcome to León!!! León was named in honor to the viceroy of the time almost 450 years ago on January 20th. It is the union of 5 towns or villages, now called barrios -the only barrios in León, all the others are colonias. San Miguel, el Coecillo, Valle de Señora, Barrio arriba y la zona centro.

People from Leon are called "panzas verdes" meaning green bellies. They used to grow a lot of lettuce around the area hence the nickname, good video and content, l was born there.
Please you have to try "cebadina" is classic, it's in the main plaza (zócalo) you we're and more important, eat a guajolota, just ask people for both things, You won't regret

Have several Mexican friends who were born and raised in Leon and because of All the crime have moved themselves and family to PV and Bucerias. I usually don't like to say negative things about my adopted county but not everything is positive if you tell the truth.

To answer your question, many cities in Mex are named after the cities in Spain from which the conquerers/founders were originally from. As far as I know, the original city of Leon in Spain was named "Legio" after a Roman Legion founded it as a military encampment. How the word Legio became Leon overtime, I''m not sure, but was a process that took some 700-800 years. Nothing to do with the actual animal...but dont quote me, I could be wrong, lol.
Leon's name explanation is simple. The population is named after the city of León in northern Castile. During the Roman Empire, both León and Lyon in France were defensive fortresses that held a Legion. The name derives from the origin of those cities as Legion holders and defensive places. Over the years, the name changed phonetically to adapt to the Romance languages emerging from Latin: Castilian and French. Curiously, the name of the city in contemporary Spanish matches that of the animal.

I've been to Leon. It's a cool city. That section where El Panteón Taurino is located is awesome.
