During the Battle of the Coral Sea, dive bomber pilot Stanley 'Swede' Vejtasa shot down two enemy Zeroes with his forward facing machine guns and claimed another by using his wings to shear the enemy's wing off.
Your task is to do the same. Shoot down two Zeroes with an SBD-3 and then use your wing to cut the wing off a third.

    Full nerd time...
You asked for engine difference so I'll try not to touch on air-frame which is huge (mainly radiator flow, weight, fuselage and yaw drag).
First off the main difference between the 1650's is Merlin version they were based off ... The Packard -7 = Merlin 66 and The Packard -9 = Merlin 100. The main difference between the two engines was the supercharger and block (which is why you see a larger engine). The -7 (Merlin 66) was a 2 stage, inter-cooled, supercharger. The -9 (Merlin-100) was an "auto boost" (Direct fuel-injected*) 2 stage, "duel" inter-cooled (it had an after-cooler), supercharger.
Next the -7 ran max 100 octane fuel while the -9 could run 100 to 150 octane due to its advanced *fuel injection* carburetor... ya that's right... oh and by the way WEP was now a water/alcohol injection supercharger. The 600 lbs lighter air-frame meant the propeller reduction gear was reduced from .447:1 to .420:1.
The Brits also added a oil cooler radiator thus running cool oil temps with increased volume.
Now for the engine block. Even though both engines were 1648 cu. in. displacement, the later model 66 spits were running insanely hotter... so early model Merlin 100's actually had the same size block as the 66's. They realized they had heat problems and increased the size of the engine block to increase water jacket volume around the cylinders, thus reducing water temps.
These later blocks also increased manifold pressures and changed the designs of the Spits.. and then Mustangs... uppers to parabolic cam shafts, thus increasing cam efficiency and cylinder combustion pressures.
If any of my info is questionable, please let me know, as I'm getting it from the son of an old timer from my shop that used to work at the old Packard test facility here in Shelby Twp, MI. These guys are amazing to talk to as are the guys from Allison.

Fun fact... the P51 WEP was actually a small wire pilots had to break in order to increase engine hp and "dump" a direct injection of water/alcohol mix into the supercharger... If used for more than 5 mins "serious engine damage could occur"... thank god for War Thunder WEP.

    Hey Phly,
Engineer here. The Engine is longer because the cylinder heads must be larger to develop more power. The cumulative (total) increase in the size of those cylinder heads plus the increase in the size of auxiliary components results in a larger engine.

The P-51H was a later design, and was only just starting production as the war ended. This meant that the Packard Merlin was much more mature, and the engineers could wring a lot more performance out of it, especially with the addition of Water Injection (ADI-AntiDetonation Injection), which allowed the engine to run at power levels that would utterly destroy a lesser engine. Many of these upgrades would be expanded upon later to make the racing Merlins used at the Reno Air Races today, which can crank out over 3300 hp.

3:12 Ever heard of the term "No replacement for displacement"? It's sort of used as a joke in car culture, referencing how American muscle cars retain the more innefficient way of getting more power by simply beefing up the size rather than implementating other power adding methods, such as forced induction. Something more realistic that someone named Jed already mentioned, American designers got pretty crazy with advanced injection methods for boosting crazy amounts of power into aircraft engines, such as the F8F water-methanol radials boasting over 2000 BHP. That much power from a less efficienct radial?!!!! Albeit, the engine would quickly overheat as well as drastically increased maintenance requirements, but all that stuff doesn't matter because MO POWAH BABY!!!

I'm actually in college with an attached flight school and we had a professor who had a doctorate in something aviation based. Huge history nerd. Anyways that's what he always said lol. He talked about how European design was about making the aircraft more streamlined and effecient yadda yadda, but he said the American philosophy was "no replacement for displacement". He said we just kept putting bigger engines in bigger planes lmao. I think this and P47s are just a perfect example of that. European planes were very small and cramped, but American planes were huge, even in the cockpit. We gotta make room to throw in a 30 pack of beer and a cigar holder somehow.

Packard v1650-7 had different supercharger gearing that produced lower manifold pressure (about 67" manifold Pressure) and better performance at 19000'. Higher manifold pressure means better horsepower but is dependent on fuel Octane rating (150 in this case) to prevent predetonation/nocking.
The V1650-3 was the same engine with different dual supercharger gearing that created higher manifold pressure (75" manifold pressure) and gave best performance at around 25,000' that was ideal for bomber escort missions. The -3 and -7 could be field modified by simply swapping the supercharger gearing parts in the engine.
The v1650-9 used in the P-51H included water injection and could attain 90" manifold pressure, improving high altitude performance further and giving the aircraft a top speed of 487mph.

Even supercharger from -7 67" is capable of much higer boost but maximum boost is limited by boost regulator due to engine or fuel operaton limits

But critical alt for 1st and 2nd supercharger gear reduced significatly

The Packard V12 used in this plane had a bigger engine displacement. It's the same type engine they used in the PT boats which used twin Packard V12 engines to achieve extremly high speeds. The Packard V12 was an exceptional engine that the Packard motor company used before shifting to mostly 8 cylinder engines to save costs. Although the engines in the Mustang were licensed Rolls Royce Merlin engines, Packard really knew their stuff. This Mustang also has a better super charger due to increased manifold pressure

The H model "mustang" was a near full redesign of the plane. It was lighter with a bigger wider prop. It used a new injection system that increased "emergency" power over the original engine but BHP was lower. They also reduced wind drap on the plane by moving coolers and reducing air flow intake sizes. Making this mustang faster then the previous models. The test models that used the new RR Merlin engine were even faster but they couldn't get enough engines for production.

The V1650-9 engine had water injection, and an automatic supercharger boost controller.
Water injection cools the intake charge, making it more dense, a denser air/fuel charge produces more horsepower, it also allows an engine to run higher levels of boost pressure and not get detonation. More boost makes even more horsepower. The V1650-7 in the D was rated for 61" of mercury at max boost. In the H, The V1650-9 on WEP with water injection was rated for 80"
Automatic boost control for the supercharger means boost is optimized to the altitude without the pilots input.

Now, I feel as if they're on the verge of being close to real life performance, what people don't take into account is that planes in WT have almost perfect accuracy thanks to mouse aim and 3rd person, and having 6-8x .50 cals mean you'll be landing 100-200 .50 bullets into a small concentrated part of a plane in 2-3 seconds, nothing could really withstand that.

    PhlyDaily:
Post-war, Britain was raising licensing costs for the Rolls Royce engines that Packard reproduced in the US. In addition, the US Army wanted their flagship fighter to be powered by an all-American powerplant, not a British one. The Army went to GM for the newer Allison engine, but it didn't make nearly as much power and the top speed as well as flight ceiling were reduced. Hence the horsepower reduction in later variants of the Mustang. In this case, the final form was actually inferior to the earlier, Rolls-Royce powered P-51's.

Again people argue about planes. As most said before it will always depend on the man behind the stick, no matter how bad the plane is. I've seen people beet the shit out of me262's, russian mig-9's andyak 15's using a p47 . personal experience took out 2 jets in tank rb using only the SB2C4. If your logic is "ahh it's a jet, ah im higher br, ahh better turn time and guns, ahh much faster than him so I am unstoppable, then your logic is wrong. No matter how good your plane is, if you don't use your brain then you suck 100x than the noobest player in warthunder.

When you land and you've touched the ground, do you raise your flaps to get more grip on your wheels because less lift and your brakes will stop you or do you fully extend flaps to increase drag?

    • @javlarm8

I may be wrong, but i think it had an overdrive build into flywheel, before connecting into prop shaft . So, it could basicly chainge its prop turning ratio on higher altitude to spin faster in same engine rpm, to negate the less effective propulsion from prop due thinner air ( prop needing to work harder to make up the difference ) . That compined with prop pitch was mint.

I'm fine with the P-51H at 6.7.... but.... if it will stay there, then I want these changes:
F-84G to 8.0 (Yes it has 8.0 stats),
    F-84B to 7.7 or 7.3,
    Event 262 with 2 30mm's (At 6.7) put up to 7.0 br,
    Ho 229 to 7.3,
    Maybe first Meteor to 7.3,
    F-80C to 7.7?
    MiG-9/L to 7.3 br,
Not sure what to do with Arados,
    F9F-2 and 5 to 8.0 maybe ,
    F9f-8 to 8.3,
Do all that (Or make the P-51H 6.3 br).

ahahah...BR 6.3...you make me laugh...this is a prop plane...due to it's unique characteristics in versing jet combat you should be untouchable in a 1v1 situation (aside from Ho229s...oh those special snowflakes) for exsample remmber when the AD-2 was 6.0?... that was perfect...jet didn't care about you cause it was the case 'I'll deal with you later' and you could out turn them even if they did...putting something's BR lower around the 6.0 to 7.0 bracket could actually make it worse...the H could be 7.0 and even the times you get 8.0 games you could out turn the G91s...which really are your worst threat so no...keep it at 6.7...i love it...either i fly it and kill noob meteor pilots...or i fly my 262 and kill noob H pilots...its a win win....

if no one has answered its because it has a one stage superchager>>>> The first American version of the Merlin was the Packard Merlin 28 (Mark XX), designated the V-1650-1 by the American military. This engine used a single-stage, two-speed supercharger. The two-speed gearing was - as well as for the "R-R" Merlins - from a French Farman patent license.

Extra length is because the pistons are larger therefore you need a bigger block. Number of cylinders doesn't designate engine size. You can have an 8.0l inline 4 or you could have a 2.0l V12.

    Info on The Different engines:
The Packard V-1650 is a licensed produced version of the Merlin
The P-51D-30 block uses the V-1650-7 that is almost identical to the Merlin 66 used in the Spit LF Mk.IX
The P-51H uses the V-1650-9 that uses a better automatic supercharger and much higher boost pressure.
The H does this by using water injection, either this or the supercharger is likely the increase in length.
War thunder doesn't model everything attached to the engine, so its probably the water tank for the new water injection.
Boost pressure is a measurement of how much the supercharger pressurizes the air over atmospheric. The more you pressurize the air the more air enters the fixed volume of the cylinders. More Air entering the cylinders means more fuel can be burned and when more fuel is burned the more power achieved. Boost pressure is only limited by the strength of the engine, the detonation resistance of the fuel you are using and the strength/size of the supercharger. The Packard Merlin and the supercharger were sufficient but to increase the octane (detonation) rating of the fuel water is sprayed down the intake which absorbs and then returns heat. Development of the Packard Merlin did not stop after the war and continues today, where we have Packards making 3,800hp in race trim.

R is radial, and if they ever put in cessnas o is apposed. The number is cubic inch displacement. R2800, radial 2800 cubic inch. Im waiting to see one added with the r4360. Hope this helps.

Part of the reason the P-51H gets more power is due to higher compression fuel used at the time, reducing misfires and inefficiency. That's only a small part of it though. It also had a larger displacement with larger cylinders and a shorter stroke, meaning more horsepower higher in the power band.

Someone mentioned that the engine in the P-51H was bigger due to bigger cylinders.
    This is false.
The Packard/Merlin engine that this aircraft is based on has a Two Stage Supercharger mounted on the aft end of the engine which was bigger than the single stage of which all other merlin(100 series) engines had.
Also, it appears that warthunder decided to downrate the motor in the game because it is rated to 2218hp with water/ethanol injection.

The larger engine is most likely due to larger cylinder bore diameter, which would require a longer and slightly wider engine block. It might also have a better compression ratio and/or a better supercharger, adding a bit more power on top of the bigger cylinders. (I'm too lazy to actually research the engine)

The reason the stat card isn’t helpful and why you can match the climb rate of the spitfire is the variability of rate of climb. It has to do with power, speed, weight, angle of attack and other variables. But there’s a huge range of rates of climb across air speeds and the fastest possible rate is actually at a much high air speed than you expect. It’s not about pitching up as much as you can, you actually climb faster with more speed, until a certain point.
