One of my favorite things about your channel is that you are never afraid to try new skills and you incorporate the new skills as you start new projects. I can only guess how awesome your projects will turn out in the future!
Idea: Make a damascus version of that engraving hammer. What a skill to hone, engraving. Respect to you for diving in with your usual enthusiasm and drive. Hope your mouth feels better soon.
Love the way you jump in and learn and apply new ideas, just shows that anyone can try and see what they could do! Best of luck on the new project and swift healing.
Remember when you used to start your videos with tig welding since you wanted to practice. YOU NEED TO START DOING THAT WITH ENGRAVING, STARTING TODAY Then you'll get your practice, then you'll get better!!!
What I admire most about you Alec is the fact that you are willing to devote hours to practicing a skill just for the simple reason that you wish to learn it. You don't need to know how to do inlay or engraving but it is something that you know would make you a better craftsman so you do it. A wise man once said that here is no such thing as wasted knowledge. The same can be said of any skill. Knowing what is possible allows you to see more options and possibilities often in what may seem to be totally unrelated crafts
I did an apprenticeship as engraver in Suhl, germany. The ball vise is good for smaller tasks and letters but for making scrolls ect you should Build a vise that can rotate freely. We used a normal vise on a bearing with adjustable height and adjustable rotation. Thats how we did it in class. And thats how the professional engravers in germany do it. You can get the curves a lot better and kinks will Not Happen that easily. It will be a lot cleaner. Keep it up, you doin very good. love your vids.Greetings from germany. Hope this will help you, cheers Edit: another tip: perfect distance from your working piece is when you can put your fist under your chin and your elbow on the vise and keeping your back straight. Otherwise you will end up having serious back pain very soon ^^
I could definitely tell a difference this video, but your a real trooper for pushing through! Prayers for fast recovery, can’t wait to see you back with that contagious energy
I know the pain Alec! I got all 4 wisdoms out at once and I couldnt eat for a whole week and my face blew up! I wanted to laugh at myself but the pain was too much
it's so different having the loud and positive energy from you just about yelling at the screen telling how excited you are about everything going on. i can feel it still deep inside you. get better and stay amazing! love your content and merch!
Prayers for a fast recovery.. I've never had wisdom teeth at all. Clove oil will help with the pain and a used tea bag will also help soothe pain. So glad you decided to delve into more engraving art.
Black magic? Is this a dig on A Childers "Prayers for a fast recovery" or tea bags and clove oil? If it's the latter then ice is good for reducing swelling but should be used on the face while applying a moist tea bag to the wound. The tannins in tea are vasoconstrictors that help stop bleeding as well as being antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Clove oil is of little use after an extraction but it's one of the foundations of dentistry. It's used for both antiseptic and pain killing and a temporary filling is essentially dental cement and clove oil. On the other hand if it was a dig against religion, grow up.
This one is close to be my favorite video from you. You don't cheat and show us how you learn.. love it! It looks like a way more easy than wood! I'm gonna try it!
4:15 amazing! You went from rubish lines to a far from rubish beautiful leaf in no time and even less tries... Yet another skill to add to your set! I hope you truly understand what a blessing it is to learn things so quickly. I'm not going to say "easily" because I'm confident that you put in all the effort (and not to forget elbow grease) required to acquire new skills, but you do collect them amazingly fast...
If this is your first attempt at H&C engraving, you did very well. Looks like the ragged edges of your cuts may have been caused by either not having your graver properly sharpened or making too deep a cut (too aggressive). I like a parallel face on my graver as it makes nice even cuts and is easy to resharpen.Graver control comes with practice and nothing can replace it. If you want your engraving to look like you've been engraving for 20 years, you have to engrave for 20 years. There is only one shortcut and that is to train under a good instructor. Love you video's. Keep up the good work. Those that dare, win.
As a Jeweler by trade for the last 15 years, I can safely say that engraving is one of the more challenging tasks I've attempted. The key I have found is to make sure you always have a very sharp graver and sometimes it helps to grind a small relief on the bottom of your graver. Something around 10 degrees or maybe less, everyone has different ideas about it but it seemed to help me.
Arie Kieser speaking of getting much better i made my first knife using alec's pre-form technique and it the best one ive made yet. Its a chopper with a convex grind, and a black walnut handle and it looks very nice
Different types of gothic letters are one of the best for engraving practice. Also quotes, dedications on things you will craft will be most wanted I guess. I wish you quick recovery to full health!
Tranquility and silence, finally. To be honest, I like this style much more. You're finally not yelling at the camera. Can you continue like this? Sincerely yours P.S. Get better soon
Haha, I do tend to mute it whenever something comes out of the etch... Still some of my favourite content on UA-cam at the moment (except for This Old Tony, but hey, no one can beat that)
Bobby Hempel, you - maybe. I - don't. It's a matter of preference. IMHO, if you say so. No doubt, it's definitely one of a hell quality content. But general loudness and noisiness for me - it's a drawback. No offense intended.
I really enjoy the energetic and hyped side of yourself, but this is also nice. I enjoy being excited with you though, because I can relate to the feeling of accomplishment when you get it just right. Hope you have a quick recovery and all is well.
In my opinion is start from the top then make my way to the bottom I carve with wood and I've worked with a little bit of metal, the consistency is way different bit I try to view things from every angle before getting comfortable. I really enjoy your videos and take very great pride and work, have fun with future work!!
Well, thats a coincidence. I was chatting with an engraver today who was on holiday in my village in France. I google his name and his stuff is incredible - 3D engravings on gun stocks. His name is Vincent Crowley - I'm hoping to do a Chop knives collaboration with him on one of my knives. Great to see you pick this up so quickly - hope the mouth heals quickly!
Alec thanks for the inspiration I now have a forge some tools I’m thirteen and I’ve been saving for a belt grinder my family gave me a tig/stick welder/plasmacutter for my birthday and I love blacksmithing
Alec for being your first time you are absolutely a natural given the way that you learn new techniques very quickly and as well as you did on that first engraving I assure you that you will be making quality and very beautiful and ornate Engravings in no time
Hey brother. I've been through that pain as well. The pain right now is just from swelling. Try a cold compress a few times a day and before ya go to bed. I'm proud of you for fighting through the discomfort to make us some informative videos. Thanks.
Why not try to get a hold of Holland and Holland and see if theyll give you a tour and give you a crash course in their workshop since they do a LOT of engraving?
I know nothing about forging, nor have I ever had the urge to. With that being said, these videos are FANTASTIC and and can't stop watching them. This is some of the best content on UA-cam. Well done.
Not that I dont like your usual videos, I love them actually! But I think I actually prefer this "serious-face Alec" for some reason. On the subject of wisdom teeth - I also had mine removed about a month ago, I feel you mate!
It's nice to have a break from the normal super energetic Alec. His noisy enthusiasm is sometimes overwhelming for a quiet introverted person like myself.
I truly understand your pain: just few hours ago I've been to the dentist for the same reason!!! Incredible pain so.. You're a HERO to me, because your video today is a truly benedition: cause I can focus on watching it while not thinking of my pain! I'm with you Alec!!!! Great job as always, I love your work, and I love your commitment to bring all of us with you in your daily journey while still on pain!!!!
I love these episodes where you just practice a new skill. loved the leather videos. my favorite project that you have dones were the handtool knife. I even liked the welding episode.
that's how I started out engraving in both wood and metal! I then moved up to a dremal I'm currently working my way to the pneumatic tools. I'm also in the process of getting everything together to start blacksmithing and blade smithing😁
I really like the mellowed down version of you! Most of the time you are a bit to intense for my taste, but your channel is to good to just " not watch anymore". Damn you 😉
Well Dona as usual alex. I have a small forge myself that's nothing more than a clay lined pit, a hairdryer as the blower, and a piece of angle iron for the anvil. I'm currently using a 3lb cross pein hammer and a pair of small vice grips to make a pair of larger forge tongs. Not going so well but your channel is a big help.
One thing I found in my brief and far less successful foray into engraving was the tendency for my hand to not move as the cut is made, so the graver gets shallower and shallower until it skitters away from me over the surface and scratches the metal. But this video has inspired me to sharpen up my tools and try again.
You have my sympathies Alec. I had all four of mine removed. I look forward to engraved projects. Though if you want metal inlay in wood, finely ground metal powder and superglue is a not so elegant solution when used to fill carvings.
I used to work for a silversmiths designing engraving patterns! I’m impressed you were able to achieve what you have with just simple tools. I started playing around with engraving since your falchion video came out, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one finding it to be quite a difficult set of skills to develop .
Noticing the prescription of your glasses after watching almost every video you have published. I would reccomend taking your glasses off to engrave and other super close fine detail work.
Also check out some copper and brass patinas, most are generally easy and cheap to do. Rice and ammonia on copper makes a very cool patina when left sitting for a couple of days.
I hope you're doing better Alec! its never fun having to get dentistry such as wisdom teeth removal so i'm happy that you're still here despite your healing, i miss your smile though because its always great to see that beaming joy as you do what you love. Might i mention that one thing that isn't necessarily metal working but could still allow for other fantastic crafts is Lapidary, it would be interesting to see you inlay a pommel or something with a gorgeous polished stone regardless, its amazing to watch you learn these and inspires me to learn new things daily :)
LOL what a big coincidence I just got done with the dentist today had a root canal and another tooth fixed I feel your pain I hope you get better and the first time I learn how to engrave my teacher had me start out with softer metal like copper and aluminum he says it's easier to learn how the metal moves while your Engraving and help you perfect your technique then gradually move up in hardness
Love to watch your videos, You sir impress me. You have a mindset that we all could learn from, HUGE respect. You will end up being a huge figure in the industry
One of my favorite things about your channel is that you are never afraid to try new skills and you incorporate the new skills as you start new projects. I can only guess how awesome your projects will turn out in the future!
Just had a 4 tooth removal a few months back, i feel you my good sir.
Idea: Make a damascus version of that engraving hammer. What a skill to hone, engraving. Respect to you for diving in with your usual enthusiasm and drive. Hope your mouth feels better soon.
"had a doctor go hammer and tongs on me" had me dying I don't know why.
mortallum 1997 that’s my understanding of what a dentist does 😂
That's what happens when a dentist and a blacksmith crosses paths.
Haha no yeah I’m fine my jaw is still numb and I have stitches and swelling and much pain but I can still make this video. Beast Alec haha
Your drive to learn is unmatched, sir. I love watching you progress through things like this.
So different to see you not at 110% energy. Hope you feel better soon!

Good idea

This is the same vise that Sam Alfano uses and well, he’s the best in the world. So yeah, he’s got the right tools.
I could definitely tell a difference this video, but your a real trooper for pushing through! Prayers for fast recovery, can’t wait to see you back with that contagious energy
I know the pain Alec! I got all 4 wisdoms out at once and I couldnt eat for a whole week and my face blew up! I wanted to laugh at myself but the pain was too much
I feel your pain as well ThatAussieBloke all four taken out
Whenever people talk about wisdom teeth and all I suddenly realise I have only a few years left before it's my turn...;_;
I appreciate the true view of the undertaking. You didn’t edit everything bad out and we get a true view of how hard it actually is. Thank you
The intro sounded like a Bob Ross video black smith style haha, love it!
it's so different having the loud and positive energy from you just about yelling at the screen telling how excited you are about everything going on. i can feel it still deep inside you. get better and stay amazing! love your content and merch!
Prayers for a fast recovery.. I've never had wisdom teeth at all. Clove oil will help with the pain and a used tea bag will also help soothe pain. So glad you decided to delve into more engraving art.
Lucky. I got nerve damage from getting mine out.
The tea bag also helps with inflammation and to prevent infection.
Ice will work best actually. Black magic isn't as reputed in the medical world
And if non of that works, use good old oral morphine. Lovely stuff.
Black magic? Is this a dig on A Childers "Prayers for a fast recovery" or tea bags and clove oil? Someone FromAbroad HELL YEAH!! You, are a genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love the way you dive into the deep end of something new and not give up improving. Impressive!
Alec good luck with your teeth, and keep up the great work, I an following and learning from you. I am getting much better.

I like this quiet contained style too. Maybe Alec can find a comfortable middle ground?
I have an idea. Just let the guy be himself...
Alec, Your lowered voice and relaxed delivery is bordering on Blacksmith ASMR. A calm way to end the day. Cheers.
I'm totally cool with the occasional quiet Alec vid, recovering from surgery or not.
I really enjoy the energetic and hyped side of yourself, but this is also nice. I enjoy being excited with you though, because I can relate to the feeling of accomplishment when you get it just right. Hope you have a quick recovery and all is well.

If you like engraving, check out Shaun Hughes Hand Engraving channel, amazingly detailed tiny pieces of art.
Your ambition is always inspiring Alec, Engraving will be an incredible addition to your skill set, and your work. Keep at it!

1320crusier if I were a professional engraver, that would be my Mecca
This goes to show how your positive and energetic tone of voice makes your videos that much better. Hope you recover fast. Loved the video as always
While I love HIGH ENERGY Alec, I also rather like q u i e t Alec. The contrast is refreshing.
I know nothing about forging, nor have I ever had the urge to. With that being said, these videos are FANTASTIC and and can't stop watching them. This is some of the best content on UA-cam. Well done.
Dentist, forgers with a different kind of metal.
Feel better!
So excited to see this element of beauty that could be added to future projects! Like a jewel encrusted sword with inlays and engravings!
Not that I dont like your usual videos, I love them actually! But I think I actually prefer this "serious-face Alec" for some reason. On the subject of wisdom teeth - I also had mine removed about a month ago, I feel you mate!

i don't know if I'm super lucky or not but in addition to the 4 missing adult teeth i have i also seem to be missing my wisdom teeth as well.
Listening to alec talk quietly is so relaxing
Love the softer voice . Do it once in a while among ze videos... and learn from this experience. 🙂👍
I truly understand your pain: just few hours ago I've been to the dentist for the same reason!!! Incredible pain so.. Wisdom teeth-
Keeping mouths quiet since 2003
I love these episodes where you just practice a new skill. loved the leather videos. my favorite project that you have dones were the handtool knife. I even liked the welding episode.
Forge a coffee cup😎
Oh man, Alec, This really goes to show just how much raw *energy* you've got!
Actually I think "This Old Tony" does teeth extraction! And no way he would make you laugh!
I love how you try to learn almost every type of art/work, amazing, I hope to be even a 10th of your attitude to work and learn. Love it!
love your vid even if you can’t talk
Feel better! Even with the more subdued volume, your intensity and enthusiasm shine through. Great video.
Wait... what??! Just acetone on a regular pic 😱
Yeah im stunned too....WTF :-o
Yep, news to me too. Wonder if it'll work on wood as well?
has to be a laser print for the acetone trick but it does work on wood
that's how I started out engraving in both wood and metal! I then moved up to a dremal I'm currently working my way to the pneumatic tools. I'm also in the process of getting everything together to start blacksmithing and blade smithing😁

How will Alec ever finish the Viking sword with 3/4 less wisdom?
May you have a swift recovery! Thanks for the video even while you're recovering!
Wisdom teeth, highly overrated!
yeah still have 2 of these and can't wait to get rid of them
Quentin Bry lost a couple in a car crash after the steering wheel tried to rearrange my face (before airbags softened the process) 😂
I had to have my back molars removed to make space for them
muppetnumpty65, that's no fun at all, they're supposed to detonate before that happens
Got 2 of them removed because my jaw is too small, they almost damaged my back molars
The 2 left on top, will go too after a couple of months
One thing I found in my brief and far less successful foray into engraving was the tendency for my hand to not move as the cut is made, so the graver gets shallower and shallower until it skitters away from me over the surface and scratches the metal. But this video has inspired me to sharpen up my tools and try again.
The learning curve for hand engraving is years, not months.
(Homer simpson scared squill)
Ah! A calmed down Alec steel!
גיא שעשוע Lol XD well, this is an interesting glitch
You have my sympathies Alec. I had all four of mine removed. I look forward to engraved projects. Though if you want metal inlay in wood, finely ground metal powder and superglue is a not so elegant solution when used to fill carvings.
ASMR intro... I liked it
I love watching you learn man, you take everything in stride so well.
Alec Stein? Ben Steele? WHO AM I WATCHING!?!?!?!
It's awesome how you make so many of your own tools, Alec. This channel is great.
¾ less smart = 59% smrt 🧐
Philip Gardiner it’s because he lost his wisdom
Jackbo M He gets it he’s poking fun at himself.Quite witty really.
Paul Fitzpatrick if you think I think wisdom teeth actually contain wisdom.. 🧐
I used to work for a silversmiths designing engraving patterns! I’m impressed you were able to achieve what you have with just simple tools. I recommend practicing drawing scrollwork and florals as well. Sam Alfano is a fantastic resource, another master engraver you could draw inspiration from is Barry lee hands. There are so many different styles of engraving, it’s quite fascinating what you can learn from it. Certainly an arcane art form nowadays. Awesome as always! Practice makes perfect!
This type of work doesn't meet the Doise criteria of the workshop
It's clearly Shoise. Shavings and noise- 'cause if you think the tap-tap-taps aren't loud and annoying...
Wisdom teeth suck, got all of mine taken out in April. You're a real trooper for continuing the videos! You'll heal in no time!!!
Asmr lol
Hope you feel better soon Alec! Engraving is SO AMAZING!!! I'm glad to see you are taking on this task!!! As always keep up the FANTASTIC work!!!
Quiet Alex makes me uncomfortable. It's like when my wife gets quiet and makes me wonder if I've done something wrong.
you did, you definitely did....
Learning to engrave was the single most rewarding thing I have done.....
And for you it complements blacksmithing...
Hours and hours can be spent on even a handle, second to none in terms of craftsmanship
Talking so quietly doesn't suit you xD
Hope you feel better Brian, can’t wait to get back into the shop with you!
3 ibprofine and 2 tylonal every 4 hours help with pain and swelling. Worked wonders when I got all four out. Feel better my friend
Damn, I know the feeling. I wish you a speedy recovery!
Also there is an adjustment screw for the ball vise, you can loosen it up to spin more freely.
Love that deep voice Alec. Hope you feel better soon.
I started playing around with engraving since your falchion video came out, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one finding it to be quite a difficult set of skills to develop .
I learned something new today! That acetone trick is awesome! Thank you Alec! :)
Noticing the prescription of your glasses after watching almost every video you have published. I would reccomend taking your glasses off to engrave and other super close fine detail work.
That's some real beautiful work for someone who learning as they go. I would have messed so many times. I hope you get better soon.
Also check out some copper and brass patinas, most are generally easy and cheap to do. Rice and ammonia on copper makes a very cool patina when left sitting for a couple of days.
Speedy recovery. I've done wood carving all I can say is practice, practice and some more practice. Good luck cant wait to see what you come up with.
Digging the quieter video, more relaxed & focused on the craft
LOL what a big coincidence I just got done with the dentist today had a root canal and another tooth fixed I feel your pain I hope you get better and the first time I learn how to engrave my teacher had me start out with softer metal like copper and aluminum he says it's easier to learn how the metal moves while your Engraving and help you perfect your technique then gradually move up in hardness
When you're quiet, you're like a blacksmith David Attenborough, it's quite amazing
Please do more of these!! I’m a young gunsmith wanting to pick up this trade. No one makes videos on hand engraving plus I love your channel
Cross between David Attenborough, Bob Ross, and a golf commentator. Love it!
Love your videos, and this is just what I needed to see today. The acetone trick is fabulous!
Love to watch your videos, You sir impress me. You have a mindset that we all could learn from, HUGE respect. You will end up being a huge figure in the industry
