The "rake" lines is from when the ice is removed with a road grader with a "fork", with short teeth. We have that all over the country, and yes it is annoying! Great trip so far Liz, looking forward to the rest!
Great fun to watch your stretching of the shoulder season… The marks along the raised part of the road, between the tire tracks, are there due to the winter maintenance. As weather changes between f’ing cold, rain, snow and everything in between, the tire track parts turns to “deep ruts” as ice buildup in the middle. The solution is using road graders with diamond grade teeth blade to even out and flatten the road. Hence the marks annoying any biker but probably is a good thing all things considered. Safe ride 🫵😊
Marabou is Swedish and probably was the first chocolate with Daim pieces, and they make chocolate with a lot of different flavors and combinations of other kind of chocolate bars 😊
Love your videos! You are a crazy girl, going with summer-tires on a sportbike in these conditions, but it is great to see how you tackle the challenges in such a great way. But why go to Finland so soon, Sweden has much more to give. Maybe going north this time will be too challenging, but why not go south, for example to the Island of Gotland. It is a great place to ride with great small paved roads and awesome scenery and hardly ever degrees below zero even in the middle of the winter.
Thanks for your comment! I’d have loved to stay longer in Sweden but I’m hoping to go over and do the country properly on a separate adventure, so I decided to go straight through and save it for later 😅
In Sweden you always find someone who speaks either english, german or france perfectly, that was in late 80s. Nowadays it should be no problem at all.
When you look at the gasoline pump, it says either "kort" or "Kassa". Kort means Card. Kassa mean something close to Cash register, or where you pay. If you go inside, you either ask to prepay on that pump, or you just ask them if they can open the pump for you and you go in and pay after. You can still pay with card if you want, but have the option to pay cash.
Lycksele got 4500 year old rock paintings of moose, maybe that's why they have the moose stature, but that is actually a character from a cartoon Hälge the moose!
Sweden do have a lot of candy and our candy culture is big. There are stores where you pick your own ca6 and you pay by the kg. Sometimes down to like 61 SEK per Kg. Then there is the Kex choklad. Kex in Swedish means basically Cracker. Now, Kex is a word often debated in Sweden depending on where people live. You see, K in Swedish can be either a Kay-sound, or a Shh-sound. Where I live, it is a Shhex, while in Stockholm area it is a Kex. The Daim you have looks like it is the Norweigian version.
What rust protection lol 😬 I’ve made a lot more effort this trip to keep her clean but she does have some fuzzy bolts and a nasty looking patch on her rear wheel. She’ll be getting a year off from long tours, and some deep cleaning and replacement bits to try and get her back to top quality. Not for sale or anything, I just feel bad 🥲
Home, I just ride until I run out of money/my bike is due a service, then I go home. This trip was filmed in October and I’ve arrived home last week, we did a big circle.
@@R1_Liz Well, I (almost) agree, the thermometer to me clearly shows somewhere around 2-2.5 C in the video. But that's of course assuming it wasn't affected at all from any heat leaking through the window. That in itself doesn't mean it can't be slippery though, depending on the conditions at the time and during the previous days. I had one of those moments last winter in central Stockholm late at night with the small car, which has a manual gearbox. It had been quite cold the previous days, shifting to above zero and then on the way down again. I took off from a stoplight and the intersection consistied of asphalt, ice and then water on top of the ice. It felt like the clutch had gone almost completely, and I actually questioned it's well being for a couple of seconds, until I realized what was going on. That was probably the worst case since I, though at low speed and with summer tyres a very early morning, could turn the wheel almost completely in one direction and the car kept going straight...
Hi Liz, the only way I can afford to ride is by doing my own maintenance. May I suggest a Cyclepedia or Haynes manual for your next trip. Cheers from Norway.
Honestly with prices like that then I’m the same 🥲 I will have to start carrying the proper tools with me, up until this point stopping in garages for small maintenance jobs was not at all expensive.
@@R1_LizThank You for responding. At least you're out there doing it. That is something to be respected. As a former small business owner and shipwright I gave up after a few years because I hated taking other people's money. Anyway you get my point. Safe travels:)
Still can’t understand how is it possible to tour on this bike. I’ve got an S1000r myself but it’s an ass and knees torture after one hour of riding. Will most likely trade it for Kawasaki 1000sx in the future.
How come you chose to drive to northern Sweden at this time of year? I'm Swedish and know how unpredictable the weather is now with elements of rain, slippery surfaces and darkness.
I was originally going to go in September and get further north, but my bike repairs delayed my trip. I decided to follow my plan as much as I could with less time and a later start, I really love the north! But it was a bit too late to fully enjoy it
As a Fin, i wonder why you chose to ride to the Arctic in the beginning of winter time? Regardless of the answer, have enjoyed watching the series. All the best, and keep safe.
The road phenonom you most likely is talking about is black ice. it appeears on wet roads and it looks like an normal drysummer road. But that is an false impression. instead there are an thin lyer of ice on the road. Black ice appears on cold roads when it rains and freeeces to ice or if you drive on a road close to a lake and the humidity from the lake freezes to ice on the road. Be careful! Driving on black ice is very dangerous.
Hi love you vids but just a thought for pinky Before your trips where salt may be a problem cover her in ACF won't stop it all but will stop a lot more than nothing at all pinky will thank you. Ride safe
Yes! You’re right I should do this. On this trip I have been regularly cleaning her at self service jet wash stations, so I think we’re safe this time from salt 😁
As long as its 5 degrees and not less you should be fine and it shouldn't be slippery. If it wasn't for the snow and probably lower temperatures the other day you wouldn't even have needed to think about slippery roads.
Next time you need to do something simple liken that, there is a gas station chain called OKQ8. They often have something called "Gör det självhall" which means do it yourself place. There you pay by the minute to wash your bike/car, har both low pressure and high pressure. Usually there is a lift if you need to lift your bike orndo simple operation on your car like changing the exhaust. Usually just washing a bike is like 40-60 Crowns. So 4-6 euro. Tensioning the chain is a quick job of like 10 min. I believe they charge about 3 crowns a minute. The lift us usually by the hour of 99 crowns.
I found these! I think it was Finland when I finally had a proper look and figured out how to use them, after that I stopped regularly to clean the bike in them - they’re amazing! Apparently we do have them in England but I’ve never seen one so I’m going to find some
@@R1_Liz I knew there was OKQ8 in Finland but did not know if they had the do it yourself capability. You may want to check in Denmark too if you go there because they also have the OKQ8. There might be other options for you in the UK, I lived both in Mexico and for quite some years in USA and they had nothing like it. I think it comes down to insurance issues. Many places would not dare have someone fiddle around with a lift, work under cars and so on, because god forbid if something happens, they would end up with a double digit million dollar law suit. Glad you found it. If you have any questions how things work in Sweden just let me know. Cheers from Falköping
PS. Next time, if you come on more of an ADV bike and take the TET, there are many places where you can camp for free, mostly for tenting but also little huts or little windbreaks with roof.
If you like the Freya chocolate, it's called "Marabou" in Sweden because of registered trademark issues. The reason for why is that Freya is Norwegian and their logo is a Marabou stork.
That's inherently incorrect. Norwegian Freia established Marabou in Sweden to begin with. There is not point in getting into the history of acquisitions here, but today both brands belong to Mondelez. It's just a matter of brand recognition where Freia is Norwegian and Marabou is Swedish. The name Marabou simply came about because Freia, as you point out, used the species of stork as a symbol of their brand. If you were attentive you noticed that Liz took a small piece of Mjölkchoklad out of the small basket at the AirBnB. ;)
Yep, unless the sun is like right there, then it’s just really cold in the shadows. Sometimes rain has its positives, at least if it’s raining it’s not freezing, usually
I love the comments about the guy at the filling station he did give you that look of what the fuck is she doing. Greece is hot for sure 42c in May / June when I was riding down there this year.
When you get home? You need to go to your BMW dealer and do some basic maintenance chain/ oil/ electrics ect! For your trips? You soon learn and am sure they help you? Also puncture repairs? You are just wasting so much money£120 for a 10-20 minute job for you !! Is mad! Anyhow ride safely xx
My system is to stop every 1-2000 miles for a chain adjustment, clean and check up. Usually it is free with goodwill (BMW in Stavanger are wonderful for taking care of us) or a small charge, so this £120 was unusual. I’d prefer not to carry a torque wrench around but maybe in future I’ll have to. I do carry a puncture kit.
That dealer should be embarrassed charging that much to tighten a chain. 10 minute job. Not quite the same, but I was in Bergamo, chain was really slack. Noticed a small independent and stuck my head in and asked if they could sort out chain. I don't speak Italian. They couldn't speak English. We both spoke the language of 'look how crap my chain looks'. 10 minute wait to get it into the workshop. 10 minutes later sorted. 10 Euros. Cortesi Moto are the boss 👌
I had a similar experience in Norway but I was upset at the time so I pointed to my chain while crying and they understood exactly what I meant 😅🥹 they fed me coffee, fixed my chain and sent me on my way

It is either the snow clearing or remnants of milling the asphalt. They do this sometimes if it got to deep tire groves after a few years.
