Track 09: The nurse who loved me
    ________________________________________
Say hello to the rug's topography
It holds quite a lot of interest with your face down on it
Say hello to the shrinking in your head
You can't see it but you know its there so don't neglect it
I'm taking her home with me all dressed in white
She's got everything I need pharmacy keys
She's falling hard for me I can see it in her eyes
She acts just like a nurse with all the other guys
Say hello to all the apples on the ground
They were once in your eyes but you sneezed them out while sleeping
Say hello to everything you've left behind
It's even more a part of your life now that you can't touch it
I'm taking her home with me all dressed in white
She's got everything I need some pills and a little cup
She's falling hard for me I can see it in her eyes
She acts just like a nurse with all the other guys

My wife was the nurse, as a veteran who fulling supports APC my wife was my nurse, she was my caregiver, and throughout or relationship she always dealt with my ptsd, my tbi, my spinal issues. Until one day I tried to commit suicide. We were never really stable in our marriage because we were so like minded but everything really ended there, I hid myself as to not hurt her again. To this day, we are still best friends and always will be but I tried to say hello to the rugs topography. @@giovannigiorgio4622 this is one of the saddest things I have ever read. I want to find you, hug you so tightly that you almost can't breathe, and take your hand and lead you away to a place where you will be forced to feel. The good, the bad, the ugly...I want to make you feel something, anything because I understand the cold caress of the empty black hole of nothing you speak of very well.
I would take you away, deep into the forrest on a moonlit night and we would play music, dance and sing under the stars. Preferably nude (this is not sexual, only for vulnerability). Scream and cry and laugh til we throw up. Hold hands and jump on 3 into the freezing cold river and watch our breath clouds plume around our faces and up into the night sky. I would do anything to make you feel again even if I have to provoke you into anger or even hatred for me. I wish I knew you in this life so I could take you away from all the pain that has caused you to cocoon yourself into nothingness for protection. Please remember that your cocoon, while necessary, is only temporary and when your cycle is over and metamorphosis achieved you will emerge entirely anew. Something empty becomes something beautiful and full with new wings. Cocoon yourself now, yes. But remember to emerge my friend. You are only in a time of great change. You will fly again. The skies will know you once more.

This version of the song kind of puts me in a trance. It's more surreal to me. I can see through the narrator's eyes and feel what he feels for the "nurse"
I think this song is from the perspective of a mental patient who falls in love with a nurse and is delusional about her having feelings for him as well and when he says "She acts just like a nurse with all the other guys" He thinks she's giving other people the attention only he deserves.
He mistakes her kindness with love and she might not even have a clue he feels this way about her. She's just a simple nurse doing her job

I think he's more so talking about about falling in love with his drug dealer than he is an actual nurse. This cover reminds me of the Johnny Cash cover of hurt. Where the two songs, while distinctly their own, seem to elevate one another. This version feels intense and not only does the vocal pitch here feel more powerful but the instrumentals are much more powerful. The failure version feels like a bar song. One of those songs people would go on eating a burger while ignoring while being lyrically misleading. Something akin to last kiss where people just dont notice its meat.
The other comment about hurt... im a johnny cash fan but that song was so awful " to me" that it made me stop listening to him. I know this is an incredibly unpopular opinion but trent reznors hurt is so insanely intense and filled with emotion that johnny cash fell flat on his face. I heard for years after its release that NIN covered cash because people just assume as hes old or something.
I always though that instead of it being older, its more that hes version was so dated and felt watered down. If it had come out prior id say sure trent made a cover that took a bored feeling song and made it impactful but as its the other way around it just frustrated me.
As stated im apparently alone in this as everyone loved the cash version " so they say" since i dont hear anyone talk about it currently and i still ocasionally at least hear about nin. Albeit these are rare as nin has kind of faded into obscurity as well.

I mean to me the OG sounds like it’s currently being told from a man in the same situation as the cover because Y’know, obvious is obvious- but rather than being still in trance due to possible drugs and such causing a dream/heaven like feeling, this man instead is currently beginning the process of what’s soon to become a complete breakdown.
Idk, I prefer Failure’s as i just tend to enjoy slow yet also crude and harsh sounding music but it’s obvious to see the appeal of the melancholic melody of this cover instead.

After nearly 2 decades of listening to and studying this song from a lyricist's perspective, I've come to a pretty solid theory about the actual meaning of the song. Initially, I fully believed that the "rug" was a literal one; I envisioned a man in an institution, transfixed on the carpet as many mentally ill people tend to obsess over ordinary things, and to "see" things that "normal" people do not. Along with my original understanding, I believed that the line about "she acts just like a nurse, with all the other guys" was a delusion about this nurse's secret love for him, and that "all the other guys" were merely patients to this nurse. The mention of drugs, in my mind, only confirmed my belief that he had been heavily medicated, thus causing the lethargy of laying on the ground and examining the "rug". However, this is not just one isolated song on an album; The Thirteenth Step is a full story about an addicted woman, and the consequences of her addictions, along with the codependency of her male partner; his addiction to HER. This song is a chapter in this album's story. It is not disconnected from the album's theme. Here's what I've found after so many years:
The person in the institution is not a man, but a woman. As addicts, we will set aside our morals, authentic feelings, and habits in order to get what we want. So, she devises a plan to get what she wants, that being access to drugs. While she herself may not have same-sex attraction, she has been observing a particular nurse who she discovers is same-sex attracted. She uses this in order to seduce her, and get this nurse to provide her with drugs. Notice that the title is, 'The Nurse Who Loved ME', not 'The Nurse I Loved'. Now, this next part may seem a stretch, but just hear me out: the rug is a metaphor. "Say hello to the rug's topography, it holds quite a lot of interest with your face down on it". This is a direct reference to the female anatomy. "Say hello" is a reference to the woman's inexperience and unfamiliarity with sexual intimacy with another woman. "She's got everything I need; pharmacy keys/some pills in a little cup" is about the addict's real motives. She doesn't need or want love, a relationship, or anything other than the drugs that this nurse provides. "She acts just like a nurse to all the other guys" was a line I once thought meant that the "male" patient was delusional, thinking that this nurse only treated the other patients as patients, but that she secretly loved him. Now I realized that this line is about the woman addict recognizing that this nurse has no interest in men, beyond her normal duties as a nurse. The "apples on the ground" are representative of the things that were once important to her: her values, her self-worth, her family and friends. But while "sleeping" (being high all the time), she "sneezed them out", leaving room only for her desperate desire for drugs.
This song (along with the entire album) is absolutely brilliant in its imagery, use of metaphor, musical composition, and mood. It paints a perfect picture of the mind of an active drug user, and the lengths we will go to, even at the detriment of ourselves and others, to feed that insidious thing we call addiction. Please reply if you have any insights, comments, or questions. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

One time, my ex called me saying she wanted me back, after she cheated on me.. So, I asked her if I could sing her a song, and she eagerly said yes.. After that, I began singing this, with a lot of emphisis, and after I was done, she asked me, "What was that supposed to mean?" I simpily replied 'Everything you've lost.' Hung up on her, and haven't talked to her since.. I love this song.. It has a lot of meaning for me.. 5/5, one of APC's best.

This was the song I listened to the very first time I took an oxy (which ended up turning into a 9 year addiction to both oxys and heroin) and I should have known it wasn't going to turn out well, my life was falling apart around me: I just lost a pregnancy a few weeks prior, my boyfriend was a physically and mentally abusive older guy who had manipulated my young and immature self into dropping all my friends, my family and I were constantly fighting over my relationship and I had lost a job that I loved because he didn't want me working. I still remember how none of that crap seemed to matter after poppin that oxy and just sitting there listening to this song which was odd considering i wasn't into this type of music at all but combined with the warm fuzzy euphoria I felt it just seemed to fit perfectly with the song. I never got to feel that same exact high again except for the first time I took heroin (which I also played this song too)so I spent the next decade trying to feel it again and nothing ever compared to that 1st high. I'm 6 years clean now and I think this is my 1st time revisting this song and ngl part of it makes me crave that feeling again but a bigger part of me feels proud because of how far ive come since that night .

i think the thing that makes this song even better is the possibility that since he's drugged up the whole love thing may not even be true but is just a figment of his imagination which would make the whole beauty of the song fell hollow and empty. Amazing song
