LIVE from the NYPL presents ROLEX ARTS WEEKEND
A one-on-one discussion with iconic dramatic soprano Jessye Norman. Among the most celebrated singers of her generation, Jessye Norman has played, to great acclaim, the roles of Aida, Cassandre, Alceste, and Leonore. She is also known for her commitment to philanthropy and to arts in education; She was Rolex Mentor in Music from 2004-2005 and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the NYPL.
I was fortunate enough to make it to this interview in person. When Jessye performed it was a complete surprise to all of us. I remember feeling like a fly on the wall watching and listening to someone perform in the privacy of their own home. That's how comfortable Norman was on that stage. Jessye was magnetic! I got to ask her a question and take a photo with her. It was the last time I would see her. RIP Ms. Norman...
This world is a much emptier and sadder without this marvelous human being who was named Jessye Norman.
I love this. "And I don't sing in a language that I don't speak. Non! Jamais!".
Still fabulous to listen to in 2020 🌟
Words of wisdom and truth and guidance from a wonderfully talented, gifted artist. Thank you, Ms. Norman for raising the bar.
She is a national treasure... absolutely phenomenal woman.
Apart from the fact that Jessye is an extraordinary singer, she has so many important things to say. Adorable
Wow! How can one live on NY and have missed this phenomenon?! So disappointed that I have.... thank goodness for UA-cam and the nypl.
Absolutely! " I do not sing in a language that I do not speak"
Absolutely grand words from a lady of laughter and grace. Full of poise and intellect. Thank you Mother madam phenomenal woman for sharing with me words through song. Bless your soul with continued joy, strength and faith.
Thanks for posting this. I love Jessye's message starting at 4:38. It's a great message that is profound and utterly true. It's also one of the biggest reasons music is a requirement for man kind moving forward in the future. A fact which exists whether one chooses to believe it or not.
I love you..... Jeesey and Angela Ponce...
i couldn't say it any better, I love it
A Lady of the Marian Anderson tradition it is so obvious she stands on Miss Anderson's shoulders.
amazing words. amazing person. :')
That explains her excellent diction. Her German repertoires are sung soo clear.
What's not to love about this woman
So intelligent
really Jessye, your grandmother sang happy songs when she was happy and sad song when she was sad?! Wow ... i've never heard that before........
I love her accent. she don't sound American...
Zeyn Jenkins that is what i notice too.... a little European perhaps
But you gotta love that fake accent.
HARRY K what makes it fake? I think it’s just proper diction and annunciation. What is fake about it?
@@fisk1866 Enunciation. Annunciation is something completely different.
Is he did not assume a FAKE accent you dumbkoff. As an intelligent woman she mastered five languages and was a personal friend to youngsters and promote d education globally, establishing schools, not just ‘ programs’ to which all talented and aspiring youth and adults alike were encouraged and many developed successful musical careers. She had residences in several countries, and based in Britain, a friend not just acquaintance, of Queen Elizabeth. Her speech was genuine and authentic Jessie Norman. What a great persona and what a tremendous loss.
