Great vid. I've been considering putting my 891 in the pickup. I just need to get a mobile antenna. By the way, I just got my Extra License this week. 👍
Yeah, I need to set up for mobile of for no other reason to be able to work in crap weather conditions and if it's a crowded area, to discourage nosy people from disrupting my operations. LOL I heard you activating on a Saturday night from Alabama right before Huntsville Hamfest on 40 meters while I was camping at a park in Utah. I couldn't get a good copy due to static crashes, so I just activated on 40 and got a about 30 contacts, mostly from the west. Mike - ND7E.
I have a week of vacation in September. I'll be driving from UT to SD, stopping en route in WY. On the return drive I'm coming back to UT via MT. I'll be operating when I stop for the day. I'll see some friends, visit a few new cities, and catch a few parks on the way. vy 73 de David AE4LH
Completely agree. I missed out on a POTA earlier this summer because I have the "standard" POTA station and had no place to really set up. Meanwhile, a mobile setup like this would have been perfect.
I just started doing POTA a week ago. Thanks to you, I got an ATAS 120 auto antenna, an 891, and a lithium battery. That's my POTA gear, and I'm having a ball.
Currently I have a Baofeng UV-5RPro Ham radio with an SMA to SO-239 adapter, and whilst it’s only 5 watts, it’s better than nothing. It’s only 70cm/2m, but it has worked reasonably well for short distance contacts, but I’ve gotten lucky being able to communicate 20+ miles away. Eventually I’d like to upgrade to 6m and 1.25m in addition with 2m and 70cm, but it would be also nice to find a reliable way to get 40/20/15/10m somehow. The ATAS antenna I’ve seen on some vehicles that can play around with most of the ham bands, but they are kind of pricey at just shy of $400, and only work with Yaesu radios, to my understanding. I also use a GMRS and CB radio on my car, but they’re more utility than anything else. Always love BOTH of your videos! Keep up the amazing work! - KF0QNM
I have a KX-2 and the KXPA 100 mounted on a gooseneck. Obviously it is not a Yaesu radio. Would you still use the ATAS or would you use one the new Tarheel Designs Little Pro?
I wish I could've caught this on the air. When the thumbnail pulled up on YT, I thought it looked like Ft. Scott and sure enough it was. While I'm originally from Wichita, I have a lot of family from Ft. Scott and I've been there many times. I would love to have this park in my log even if I have to drive from KY to activate it.
Try DC where some POTA parks you can only park in front of the building and there no place to string an antenna. HF mobile and VHF/UHF simplex are the only options.
Mike, I was recently talking to Yaesu and was informed that VHF/UHF Radio Transmissions from an antenna close to the ATAS 120a ( as your set up shows / and mine) can fry the FT-891. They have reported several such cases. It is recommended to put a Diplexer (Duplexer) on the HF Antenna to block VHF/UHF Transmissions into the ATAS. It is an easy thing to do. I wanted to run this by you to see if you are aware.
Wow... MIke, you sure do have a trained ear to pick those contacts out of the soup like that, and so quickly too, I was lost. It must have sounded a lot better in person. 73 de KN6VMK
you need a splitter and 2 mics! that way Jason doesn't whine about passing the mic. LOL also, I try to do 20 contacts or 30 minutes whenever I'm doing an on the road quick activation (but 10 at a minimum).
Makes me want to put radio in truck. Didn't know about Power Film. I'm about 3 hours southeast of there on the Miss. River. You are not far from Collins radio if you want to see some real antennas. KT0TT
Traveling the country with my daughter’s softball team for 10years. Maybe should have had softball parks on the air, good luck guys. Daughters travel ball ended 4 years ago so really not out in the portable that much but the 891 remains in the jeep
HF mobile is good even if you’re not doing POTA. With the 891/ATAS combo, I’m 76/100 towards Mobile DXCC with between 5 and 50 watts. (More than 50w is pointless and my QRZ Logbook under WB3CFN bears that out.) 73’s guys!!
It really does. But it's still better than the BZZZZZZZZZZ you get from 80s GM products. I've always found the noise maker and unplugged it in every vehicle I've owned. Apparently, you can't do that in new vehicles because the noise lives in the computer.
Start with getting your tech license. The second license, general, will get you on hf. After that... The yaesu 891. Icom 705. Any qrp cw rig. Depending on how creative you are you could fit just about any hf rig in a vehicle.
Like the video. For new hams, like me, the fast talking is hard to keep up with. I think is inherently one of the biggest issues with new hams and why they don't stick with it. Older hams, as in experience, rapid fire talk then get angry, abusive, arrogant or irritated with new hams and bully or belittle them. My hearing isn't the greatest anyway. When folks talk fast, like you were doing, I cannot understand everything you say. The pace is way to fast, which is contrary to everything I've read and heard from ham literature and videos. Just saying. BTW I'm a Tech working on my general.
That's a heck of a T Shirt on Lord Jason!
It's almost as nice as my Lord Mike shirt!

Congrats! 😊
Well done! de N6IMI
Congratulations 🎊🍾🎉🎈

I have the 891 with the atas in my car. Makes traveling more fun.
Nice to see y'all together. Good video and proof of why it's good to have mobile HF. Safe travels and happy hamming. 😁😎🌞
'Let's see if 14.300 is open...' LOL LOL LOL
OMG I died when I heard that
ok I am missing the joke. What is 14300 about?
Kinda digging this duo on the road trip!

That was a lesson in Industrial-POTA, boyz. Just crank out those contacts!
Good luck at the round table discussion at the Huntsville Hamfest. I hope you or someone videos it. If so, let us know how we can see it. Have fun!!
Pass the mic is okay for two operators. Beyond two, I move on.

Awesome video! I really like activations, but this mic tango y’all had going was a blast to watch. See y’all in Huntsville!
Man that looks like a s*** ton of fun! 73's!

Carry on my wayward sons!
Great fun! Safe travels 🙏
Thanks to both of you for the videos and the picking me up at the end
First Signal report from Jason was 2 2 and Mike gave 5 3. Bit of a boost up😊
Pass the mic, is like sloppy seconds of the Ham world! 🤫

You guys aren't going to Huntsville Ala, Hamfest?
Fellows, hope the correction is okay to make, the Hiway is US 69 that goes through Ft. Scott, Kansas area
Are you guys' brothers or longtime friends......who can crank out some contacts on a last second POTA activation. Good Stuff!

Always check the Pota map before you hit the road. Rookies
Thanks!!! Great vid!!!! '73 from Upstate NY !!
"Mercy sakes alive, looks like we've got us a pile up."
LOL Mike! You were 40 minutes away from me! Been there a few times, but haven't yet activated that one!
Great video guys and great activation.
Homie don’t play “Pass The Mic” 😂
That's it I'm finishing my hf install into Haminator 3.0 catch you soon
Verry Nice park & bark!

Do you mean something like a Comet CF-530C? Basically using it as a band pass filter? I too have an uhf/vhf close by front/back of vehicle.
I love mobile. I can leave it setup as long as I want and when Texas heat tries to kill me use the car ac.
You are in my back yard. 20 miles east de W0HL

Love my ATAs and hf mobile now if I could get the xyl to get her ticket and do second opp
I’ve been doing JOTA for 30 years lol. Jeep on the Air, ATAS for many years without an issue, ham sticks before that
Traveling the country with my daughter’s softball team for 10years. Maybe should have had softball parks on the air, good luck guys. Daughters travel ball ended 4 years ago so really not out in the portable that much but the 891 remains in the jeep
706 worked well as well as the ic7000
857 worked well too
You're so right. North Carolina IS the better Carolina. Born and raised. KQ4UHS
Fun-squared....the power of two. You are both fantastic efficient operators.
No wonder my HamAlert was pinging while I was in a meeting today at work! Yeah work! lol
What mount are you using?

Better than Chevy's school bus steering wheels lol
The sad thing is that somebody thought it was a good idea.
Finally got my Pota 20 mast yesterday 16th...cant wait to get it up when i get home to SW Florida on the 20th...
Paul K1YOU
good deal on the Mobile Pota Getalman
That was awesome …
Hey man.... Should the two of you be riding in the same vehicle? What if something happens to you guys? Next time put Jason in hamforce 2.

I guess I could Google it, but what's the goal of pota?
To give SOTA a superiority complex.🤣
To find the rock you’ve been hiding under!
To get hams to take their shacks outside.
Several good Parks up 69 hwy

You were in my skip zone. I could not hear a thing.
The ATAS in Alaska...SUCKS. nice they work in the states with dense population, worth having.
I can work the USA from Europe with a hamstick on top of my car.
Fun video many thanks guys!! Robert K5TPC
