I've been watching painting tutorial "for beginners" on and off for years and none of them were really for beginners. I finally found one that made me want to try again. Thank you so much!
I found that watching tutorials is not a good way to learn art since you learn by practice. Just learn how the technique's work and then practice as much as you can. Buy generic figures and forget about Game's Workshop or you'll go broke. If you really want to get into the hobby I suggest getting a 3D printer, then you can paint as much as you want and it will pay for itself in a few weeks.
These kinds of beginner guides are great for the hobby, it can be so easy to get overwhelmed when you start out, particularly with all the videos on UA-cam! Good summary in here though 😁
@@GoobertownHobbies thought this was a great tutorial in general, but I was wondering if there's any reason you used a paper plate as a pallet? I always use an old plastic lid (from a tub of yogurt, takeout, etc) if I don't have my whet pallet, as I find that using a partially absorbent paper plate dries out my paints quicker. I started with craft paints. Although I paint much better now,...with all the plethora of custom colors the one skill I lost is actually mixing shades, highlights and special colors. As I started with only 10 paints and now washes I use to mix a lot to get what I wanted. Now I just go for what’s available.

Thank you, Brent. I've just picked up mini painting again after a 40-year break. Don't get me wrong, I love Miniac, Ninjon and Squidmar, but none of their content has shown the fundamentals in such an accessible way. It's simply brilliant, and I'll be watching this over and over.
As a beginner, I feel so much better knowing using craft paints doesn't make it taboo to tabletop players or other painters as well. Great tips and advice as well! Helps me understand what I did wrong and is fixable!
I started painting my toy soldiers when I was about 5...50 years later, and I still enjoy the hobby. The toys have gotten more expensive, and the paints and tools are better, too, but the basics are the same. Great video - hope it inspires regulars like us to share it with our kids, nieces and nephews, and others that haven't yet discovered it for themselves! Nice video!
That's the video I would have love to see a year ago, when I started mini painting 😅 I used craft paint, not even knowing there were different kinds of paint, and it took me months to learn that you're actually supposed to dilute paint with water. :P I watched hours of Geeks and Sundry's painters guild, of various youtube channels about insane painting techniques, and I swear I didn't hear dilution mentioned once in those first months. :P Now, that video exists. Thanks Brent! I'll be sure to refer to it to anyone beginning.
Been painting for a minute now but it was your videos that opened up the door for me. This hobby has helped me so much with dealing with stress. Thanks so much for being you!
Even as a relatively experienced painter who likes experimenting with advanced techniques and trying to push myself, it's strangely satisfying to watch such a basic tutorial done so thoroughly :)
I've been painting on-and-off for more than 25 years (more off than on…) and whenever I tried to teach a youngster the hobby I always faced the same problem: where to start, what kind of materials to use. And that's because during the many years I've been on the hobby, I have hoarded quite a lot of different tools and paints, and you cannot say to a newcomer "hey, spend more money than you actually have in order to have the bare minimum tools to start, and if for some reason you later don't like the hobby, tough luck!". This approach, with cheap materials, easy figures, etc. is the way to go. Thanks a lot for this video and the many others in your channel.
This is far and away the BEST beginner painting video that I've ever seen! I've been painting for a decent amount of time and while my inner nerd shrieks in rage at the idea of using craft paints on minis, using them to get into the hobby makes 100% sense. I've sent this to my friends and wife and I'm hoping one of them picks up the hobby! Thank you for making this video!
I started mini painting using craft paint. While I've since bought a set of dedicated mini paints, I still argue that craft paints aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be. They're a less effective tool, yes, but they accomplish the goal of allowing a new painter to get into the hobby.
Paint w a mix of craft Gw and even some art acrylic. Craft paint is fine for base / primer coats . Sometimes seems a lil dingey if it isn't thinned but for getting stuff done Apple paints are Gr8.
I’ve wanted to get into this hobby for a few years now, but after watching your vids for a year I’m finally gonna start. I’m gonna buy some minis, paint and a pack of brushes asap! Thanks Brent, you’ve been a real inspiration!
This is great to show people that the biggest hurdle isn’t tools or supplies, but overcoming the fear of mistakes! The paper plate palette is also great. I use paper plates for a dry palette all the time, cheap, easy, disposable.
As an artist who has done a whole bunch of different mediums, I have always said that mini painting is by far the easiest art form to get into. And that literally anyone can do it, barring something like a physical handicap. All you need is a base coat and a wash, and your mini will look so awesome! Anyone can do that! If mini painting seems cool to you, grab some pants and paint those minis! You can do it, and they will look absolutely amazing. Painted minis are always better than unpainted minis
Thank you for finally giving me the video I needed to show the kids at my work how to paint! I work childcare, and I have a lot of kindergarteners that look at the minis I bring in to show my coworkers. Inevitably, the question comes up. "I wanna do that! Can I do that, Miss Laura?" With this video I can actually say "Yes! Yes you can."
I was given some mini paints a few days ago and I just finished watching your first beginner tutorial yesterday! This is exceedingly timely, thank you!
I just want to say thank you! I've been trying to paint miniatures for a while now but every time I try to look something up the videos already assume you know what you're doing!
You did a great job of breaking down the barriers to entering the hobby, Brent. I am especially impressed that you demonstrated undercoating as prep for painting with colors with notoriously poor coverage (eg, brown under yellow or gold; black under silver). Slapping down a layer of a compatible color with better coverage on top of the black before going to the more transparent color really does speed things up and improve the quality of the result. I don't know that I've seen too many intro videos mention this high-return "technique."
I've been painting minis for four years with craft paints, homemade washes and Rattle primer. I don't ever really plan to get any citadel/vj/army, like, ever. Once I learned to do zenithal spray, drybrush and glaze properly I got up to what I'd call tabletop quality and I'm satisfied with my progress. This is a great tutorial. Thank you.
I was really overwhelmed when i started the hobby a year or so ago. Earlier forays into painting went very poorly. Your videos are awesome because they always match what I've tried. I wish this video had been out when i started because i was using craft paints. I still feel like I'm not "doing it right" so i think i just need to keep practicing. Thank you for these videos!
Another youtuber did a beginner guide a week ago. And if you have any, and I mean ANY, questions about painting, then Vince is your guy. His videos are godsends. Many videos do like 5 minutes to explain. Vince takes a little more time and effort to explain not only the how bit the why as well. ua-cam.com/video/FXctnwW8Vt0/v-deo.html
My wife and I picked up an Age of Sigmar starter set to get into painting minis because of your videos. We plan to start tonight when we get home from work and are super excited!!! Thanks for your awesome videos that are so calming and helpful.
As a beginner to miniature painting (but not to painting and crafts in general) so far all of your videos have been extremely helpful and I learned a lot of traps to avoid/ mistakes to make before even starting my first one. Even the more advanced videos I didn’t feel overwhelmed- but it makes sense you can use every tip and try everything on your first model - you gotta just play with the paint and get a feel for what’s it’s like to put it on and each mini after that gets better.
I've been mini painting for over a year now and this is the first video I've seen that did a great job of pointing out that it's okay to not get perfect coverage with one or two layers.
I wish I'd gotten into the hobby sooner, that I wasn't so afraid to mess up as I was. I am so glad to be trying this myself, and have been enjoying every minute. I may have only painted a contingency of Templars and a giant wolf so far, but I am already planning my next project. Thanks for having such approachable and easy to comprehend newcomer friendly videos. I am happy to say they gave me that final encouragement to jump in, and I look forward to how things go.
This is what I love about Goobertown Hobbies--your videos always tear down barriers of entry to new hobby members. A lot of beginner videos will spend their time going over all the things you "need" to do--stuff like spray primer, hobby paints, cleaning models, etc.--but in reality, you can get by just by slapping some craft paint on a model and having fun with it. These sorts of tutorials are exactly what new hobbyists need, since it explains the fundamentals of mini painting and why people rely on stuff like primer, nice paints, and all that, but doesn't act like that's a requirement to start painting. Thank you very much for putting the effort into opening this hobby for as many people as possible. :)
I got my kids reading these. I could have sworn I pre-ordered book 3. Whelp, I ordered it anyway. So excited to get these printed and have an awesome painting day with my boys.
Brent, you're always the first name out of my mouth when beginners ask for good UA-cam channels to check out. Your beginner content is so good and so approachable and I love how you really emphasize such a positive attitude, as well as including the details of how to thin paint, and what a mini with a single coat of paint looks like. Definitely questions I had when I first started my journey! Your videos helped me grow and I hope they help tons of other people, too! ❤️🥳
Dar Brent, Thank you very much for your videos. I've recently taken to painting miniatures after years of fighting the urge to plunge into the rabbit. I've been watching lots of your content and have learned a great deal from you already. I've painted three so far and they all look phenomenal. Thank you for everything and I appreciate your work and content. I hope to keep watching & learning from you for many more rotations
I'm not a beginner but I love this kind of tutorial. Thanks for doing it. I feel like if I had found this tutorial when I begun I would have had the level I have now faster. It's a great thing for beginners.
Wonderful video Brent! You made this very approachable and didn't overwhelm us with tons of jargon and techniques. The minis are clean and look very achieveable.
I absolutely love this; those books and characters look like they'd be perfect for my great nieces and nephews, and the minis look like some great first "real" prints to try out on the resin printer I got for Christmas. Thank you, and keep on making these awesome videos! You're a huge inspiration!
This is a wonderful tutorial, I have a resin and FDM 3d printer that I bought for D&D, I use the FDM for making terrain and huge very large stuff like a galleon for my pirate campaign, and I use resin for my minis. I actually use the exact same brand of paints that you use in this video, Apple Barrel, and Folk Art, and even the same brushes, so this tutorial had a lot of useful information for me. I'm very proud of my collection I have made, something really special about going through the entire process of picking out your STLs, or designing them yourself with heroforge (I have the subscription for 5 stl files a month from them), slicing them, printing, curing, clipping, then sitting down and listening to music or watching netflix while I sit down and paint them all. There was a lot of information in this video that I didn't know, such as how to properly care for my brushes, that I am having to replace fairly often. I have been just putting them in a cup of water and letting them soak, and my bristles become bent fairly often. How do you store your brushes after they've been cleaned, and are not in use? Also, do you have any more tips for doing the fine detail? Do you recommend the thinning technique you shown here for tiny details, or do you recommend going in with non-watered down paint for this areas? My current project is painting a massive horde of about 50+ kobolds, and around 30+ goblins, so a lot of room for practicing these techniques! A lot of duplicates of running the same STLs, so I'm trying to paint each one to be unique way to add some character, so gonna have a lot of practice!
Thank you for such an awesome video. I just got into mini painting and started to get discouraged that it was not looking right. I am so glad you said there is an ugly phase and that helped me feel encouraged to paint more!
as a noob mini painter who's been sitting on their arse (who may or may not have spent a lot of money already on materials...), this video is dope as hell. thank you!!!
Great video with a lot of encouragement and low barrier to entry for people to just "give it a try!" and not get hung up on the perfect paints, brushes, etc. One tip on paint coverage from the model painting world -- after Primer, a thin coat of Silver can provide a good start for Yellow paints and reduce the number of layers required.
Interesting idea with the silver! I guess that is the shortest 1-color route to a much lighter basecoat if you're starting with black. Huh, this one is gonna keep me up at night :-)
I started painting some stuff after watching your videos, this is exactly how I did it, spent $20 on supplies at Target. The end result is not bad, learned some stuff, but wish this video had been out then!
I sincerely love that the main tip in this video is "hey bud, just put some paint on a model!" It's the best advice for painters of any experience level. I've been doing this for years and I still get locked up in indecision. The only way out is through!
Cheap paints and brushes is all that is required! Love this video and the message behind it! Painting is for everyone, and easily accessible! Keep it going!
Hullo Brent! You have an easy going attitude and so encouraging too! I have not even broken out the mini's I have purchased from the JAZZA box yet! I am enthusiastically watching videos looking for tips n tricks to get going! I painted mini figures and models in my youth but I am having troubles getting going in the new wave of adventure figures. I worked on metal and mostly plastic models back then, some wood too. I want to thank you for producing videos that are entertaining and chock full of quality information for those of us trying to re-enter this hobby, Thank You!
I'm gonna keep telling you "you can do it!" until you open that box and give it a try! I'm so excited that you're getting back into the hobby. I'm counting on you to let me know when you've touched brush to paint!! :-)

Sometimes seems a lil dingey if it isn't thinned but for getting stuff done Apple paints are Gr8.
Great starter guide. Not just for newcomers, but also for people like me, who did not paint a miniature in years. Thank you.
That's awesome to hear! I think it's important for there to be a lot of on-ramps to this hobby :-)
What I appreciate most about your videos is the great reminder that anyone can paint. Thanks for what you do and I hope you are doing well!
You are a mad man for using those paints, you deserve every type of respect.
Thank you for finally giving me the video I needed to show the kids at my work how to paint! I work childcare, and I have a lot of kindergarteners that look at the minis I bring in to show my coworkers. Inevitably, the question comes up. "I wanna do that! Can I do that, Miss Laura?"
With this video I can actually say "Yes! Yes you can."
I was given some mini paints a few days ago and I just finished watching your first beginner tutorial yesterday! This is exceedingly timely, thank you!
I'm excited for you! Dive on in and have fun :-)
This is the one video that gave me the confidence to finally put some paint on a model. Thank you Brent.
This is really a great contribution to the volume of painting guides out there. This is the gateway guide that was really needed.
Last week I started mini painting with my 10 y old daughter.
These kind of video's really help me teach my little girl and also myself.
Thanks Brent!
I just want to say thank you! I've been trying to paint miniatures for a while now but every time I try to look something up the videos already assume you know what you're doing!
hopefully this helps some folks! We all started with paper plates and craft paint at one point or another :-)
You did a great job of breaking down the barriers to entering the hobby, Brent.
Thank you.
You are a true hobby hero Brent!
You do the hobby an amazing service, sir! My thanks!

Your videos that lower the entry barrier for beginners are fantastic, thank you!
When I started I used my dad's testor paints. They looked great to us then and in the 80s I had nothing to campare it to. It was fun! 😊
My wife and I picked up an Age of Sigmar starter set to get into painting minis because of your videos. We plan to start tonight when we get home from work and are super excited!!! Thanks for your awesome videos that are so calming and helpful.
"I don't understand makeup but eyeliner looks cool"
I agree
hehehe, right? :-)
I've been mini painting for over a year now and this is the first video I've seen that did a great job of pointing out that it's okay to not get perfect coverage with one or two layers.
sometimes ya need 3 or 4! :-)
the info about seeing the primer under the first coat is nice to know. It gives some ease of mind for beginners
"Trust the process and keep on going" I need to tell myself that more often! I get so impatient. Excellent video!
Your facial expressions are hilarious and your guides are great. Thanks!
I would love to see more of these beginner videos!
What a wonderful video for a section of the hobby often forgotten about!
As someone who painted the entirety of Imperial Assault using these techniques, this is good stuff and very valuable to new painters.
Great video, always nice to listen while working through an army.
I got my kids reading these. I could have sworn I pre-ordered book 3. Whelp, I ordered it anyway. So excited to get these printed and have an awesome painting day with my boys.
Paint toys! The dinosaur or action figures from the 80's and 90's! Awesome work!
That's so awesome! We're all doin our part to get new folks into this hobby :-)
Found a new book series for my kids and found a great video to get my kids into painting miniatures as well. Thank you!
Enjoy!!! :-)
Thanks for this. The pros out there make it look so easy , and with all the techniques it can get pretty complicated. I needed to see this!
Just got back into TTRPGs after a 30-year hiatus. I’m resurrecting some of my old metal minis. You sir are the Bob Ross of mini painting.
"I don't understand eyeliner, but eyeliner looks cool" 🤣
Got a 3d printer for Christmas and now I'm hooked! Gonna give some painting a go!
Superb video-so thorough! A perfect introduction to this hobby, especially for younger enthusiasts. I will share this with my daughter.
Hey thanks! Have fun painting you two :-)
I'm not a beginner but I love this kind of tutorial. Thanks for doing it.
I feel like if I had found this tutorial when I begun I would have had the level I have now faster.
It's a great thing for beginners.
My kids really like Fart Quest books. Thanks for the video. I will look for those minis so they can paint them. Thank you very much.
That's awesome to hear! Those books are pretty fun :-)
Wonderful video Brent! You made this very approachable and didn't overwhelm us with tons of jargon and techniques. The minis are clean and look very achieveable.
hey thanks for watching :-)
I am so glad you said there is an ugly phase and that helped me feel encouraged to paint more!
don't worry, the ugly phase goes away... eventually :-)
as a noob mini painter who's been sitting on their arse (who may or may not have spent a lot of money already on materials...), this video is dope as hell. thank you!!!
Honestly, the best video for us to share with new painters.
I started painting some stuff after watching your videos, this is exactly how I did it, spent $20 on supplies at Target. The end result is not bad, learned some stuff, but wish this video had been out then!
Absolutely one of the best articulated and easy to follow while being encouraging beginner tutorials I've ever seen!
Ilove that you make vids for the beginner and give them confidence for simple paintings to get startet
I like the style you've chosen for the minis! The vibrant, one-per-part scheme matches the sculpts nicely.
I sincerely love that the main tip in this video is "hey bud, just put some paint on a model!" It's the best advice for painters of any experience level. I've been doing this for years and I still get locked up in indecision. The only way out is through!
Absolutely!! I'm glad you agree :-)
Cheap paints and brushes is all that is required! Love this video and the message behind it! Painting is for everyone, and easily accessible! Keep it going!
yupyup!! :-)
Hell yeah! Super great beginners guide! Not everyone has the confidence or the cash to get miniature paints while starting out.
Thank you for creating a guide on how to make use of cheap and more widely available paints to use for mini painting!
absolutely! I hope it helps some folks :-)
my wife and I use apple
Barrel all the time. Not only is it cheap, it’s actually pretty darn good.
Indeed, this and Folk Art is all that I use!
I hadn't used these in a while, and I was pleasantly surprised... with a few exceptions of course! ;-)
Great video! I love how you're encouraging to artists and have tips for them at whatever stage they're currently at.
What a lovely video, as always. Your cool, aproachable and chill style is an inspiration to us all. For a better hobbie, thanks.
Outstanding video as always Brent, I’ve been showing my brother your videos and have successfully gotten him back into the hobby after 15 years! I have fond memories of watching him paint space marine drop pods in our basement when I was a wee goober!! Truly an inspiration
That's awesome! The brothers are back in action! :-)
