- S08E13 Russian fairy tale dealing with Ivan (Izotov) and Nastenka (Sedykh), who go through the strangest situations to be with one another. Ivan is transformed by a Mushroom Pixie into a bear and is almost baked by an evil witch who controls trees. Nastenka is given the Cinderella treatment by her mother and her sister, who is jealous of her long braided hair. Jack Frost (Khvylya) himself doesn't appear until late in the movie.

HOLY FUCK. I'm from Czech REpublic, where they showed this movie every Christmas when I was a kid, I had no idea MST3K did this. Amazing.
BTW, there's a real, no kidding, videogame adaptation of this movie.
I think I found it. It's a point and click adventure and on Steam called "Fairy Tale About Father Frost, Ivan and Nastya"
@@--i-am-root Oh. My. Gosh. I can't _believe_ it's real! don't have a Steam account, but maybe I'll get one _just_ for this, it's so crazy.
The creeping terror is also a good one to watch even the OG movie is so bad that it is good!
Out of all the movies they've riffed on, this one is not bad IMO. I actually unironically like the OG film.
@@member-berry-bonbons1124 I think because of the dub, people think it's a camp B-Movie, when it's more like the 60s Batman show. It's for kids, but it's also MEANT to be goofy.
The actress who played Marfushka passed away earlier this year (Jan 2023). As of July 2023, Nastya is still alive.
Ivanushka's actor spent some time in prison in the mid-80s for financial crimes, which affected him pretty badly.
And Baba Yaga was actually played by a man
I've always thought Baba Yaga would make a great villain in a horror movie set in Siberia. But I didn't know there already was a Baba Yaga, hut and all, already portrayed in a movie 😁
"european folktale directly put into a movie script with no budget" is such an underrated genre of MST3K episode
It absolutely is. I would happily watch like 1000 more of these types of episodes
What about this says no budget to you
Definitely not low budget
The movie was made in 1964 and is a soviet classic. Definitely isn't low budget!
Go back and rewatch and check it out. You don't come up with all that makeup the cast was wearing and changing out throughout the filming, the witch's rotating house, tons and TONS of custom props, all the different sets, the diverse wardrobes for the large cast ... this couldn't have been low budget.
I was trying to find what the actual budget was, but no luck. But these holiday movies, especially based on folk tales. I'm willing to bet they spared no expense. The cast was also very seasoned. I doubt some of them weren't cheap. The guy that played Jack Frost had been in movies for 30 years by the time he starred in this movie.
Ok most of my comment here is just geeking out lol. Fun looking into some of these movies that came out decades before our time.
@@MinecraftMartin _The Sword and the Dragon_ was a goddamn epic before Roger Corman got to it.
You know... this movie is actually very damn good compared to most of the other stuff these guys watch.
The dubbing kind of takes away from it, but the costuming is incredible and the adaptation of the stories when you know them are very well done. There's a cinematic style thst can seem a little silly but as an overall presentation it works.
Yeah, in my opinion this is the least bad film they've riffed on. If anything, it is actually pretty good. Yeah it's got its cheesy moments, but it's got charm to it, not to mention the aesthetic is really pleasing and we actually used a blue and silver color scheme for our Christmas aesthetic for a long time. I even have this film on DVD.
My impression? The Holodomor had some lasting psychological effects - especially on the women.
"And they lived Happily Ever After..."
"Yeah, Right! Until the Mushroom Guy moved in.."
And the whole neighborhood was high for a week!~
Ivanushka
"A young Mike Nelson!"
"Hey!"
This is probably my very favorite MST3K episode. The riffs are great, and the movie itself is a delight, good enough to watch on its own unMiSTed. I watch this whenever I'm feeling down and it always cheers me up.
daughteroftiaran the russofinnish ones seem to be the less painful the only bad thing is the translation
daughteroftiaran I grew up watching this in the 90s. Still love it and it cheers me up too when I’m feeling low.
daughteroftiaran , my fav is Devil Doll, but this is in my top 10.
daughteroftiaran hopefully it helps for me.
This is definitely one of my favorites. Along with Space Mutiny, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, Pod People, and The Creeping Terror.
Oh my...The rooster is actually talking. I thought they were just riffing on the movie. I've seen this movie several times and I never noticed that until now. The two best riffs in this were "Man, Peter must be walking around, denying everyone this morning" and "Why are you so mean to me, Tante Ernest Borgnine?"
"You keep knitting, and knitting!"
"So the world's thrown into chaos, earthquakes, floods, but that's fine, you knit your sock!"
I love to knit, and I always think of this episode and those 2 lines when I'm knitting.
I think now I will, too. :D
😂
I knit too! I think of this whenever I do socks!
Always great to find a fellow knitting nut, wish I could find one of the same gender to relate with
@@jaketucker2559 There's Carlos and Arne...
"Our little idiot is really horrible looking" might be my favorite line in any movie
Even for an evil stepmother it's so unnecesarilly evil, I love it
I love how Crow is at an utter loss for words about it.
"They're swimming in my chili, the creeps" really got me for some reason
"I didn't know there were that many landmines left in Narnia!"
I came to the comment section just to make sure this was the top quote
"Frodo gets drunk and screws with the neighbors."
"The moon is out, it's nice and bright." "Chernobyl's on fire, It's great!"
Children running and screaming in terror from a guy in a shit bear costume was strangely hilarious. I liked that Mike and the 'bots genuinely liked the scene with the baby bears.
"Awwwww, ya know! Awwwww!"
"Hey dol derry dol Tom Bombadillo!"
MICHAEL NELSON IS LORD OF THE DANCE!
Did the other one die?

"Oh, pretty flowers; pretty flowers on the stump..."
"Yeah, you got the money?"
"Every time I meet a man, he's either gay or a bear."
That was gold.
awmehgoddd - Maybe he is a gay bear.
Best riff of the episode!
awmehgoddd genius
"Father Mushroom made me this way."
"WHO DID!??" lol even the bots laugh at that reaction
This is the sun. Your call is very important to us, but due to unusually high call volume...
High enough that it _weighs the sun down,_ apparently.
"Well, the World is thrown into chaos with earthquakes and floods...But that's fine...You knit Your sock!"
I'm on an MST3K Christmas marathon.
+KamekAdvance Same. And this might just be the best episode here!
ji jo lol! Yeah, I can agree with that. :)
Uch, I wish I was in Jack Frost's snowy world. I'm on here on Aug 14th, sweating my bollz off.
I hear ya!
My brother watches that every year
I love this movie. The entire Russo-Finnish set of episodes are weirdly enjoyable.
"So the premise of this movie is everyone is nuttier than all getout."
i wish they'd done more Soviet movies, theyre some of my favorites
I think this is literally the very first MST3K episode I ever saw, and it's still one of my favorites to this day.
"'Munch and guzzle'...what the hell???"
Is it me or was this movie actually good?
As a fan of fairy tales I would say that this is pretty good. Given what they had, it's put together fairly well.
It's just you. The best thing about this movie was the commentary.
NaiTaiDai All the Ruso-FInnish productions were actually good movies. They just lended themselves to great riffing.
NaiTaiDai it's you.
+NaiTaiDai It is good b/c of the commentary from MST3K..otherwise.....
"Help me Obi Wan Kebonbiski."
“You are my only hope.”
'M' is for the many times you beat me
'O' is for the other times you beat me
"Yes, our little idiot is really horrible looking!"
Okay I know she's an evil stepmother, but seriously what the hell!
Crow’s bear simulation bit had me laughing in tears especially after he ate half of Tom Servo & buried him in the yard.
There was never an MST3K episode featuring an English-dubbed Russian and/or Finnish fantasy film that I did not enjoy. This, "Magic Voyage of Sinbad", "The Day the Earth Froze", "The Sword and the Dragon"...they're just so much fun.
Kitschensyngk - The day the Earth Froze was just awful.
Brent Haymon i liked it :p. Even worse, I enjoy Cave Dwellers!
The Day The Earth Froze is one of the least bad Joel episodes.

I love this movie! It's so weird and fun.
“Come to Knottsberry Farm and ride the unstable house!”
"Why is the coat rack on fire?" This is one the all time best of MST3K, I freaking love it!
Crow: Am I "un-bearable"?
31:10 Tom: "Oh wow, I didn't know there were that many land mines left in Narnia."
Gold.
My wife is Polish and she loves this movie and we watch it every Christmas. I always laugh while watching it because of this. XD
Mike's shirtless and surprisingly hot bod in tight leather trousers before he makes brilliant riffs - he really can do no wrong in my eyes ...
Word! ♡
For real!
I hope you're female. Otherwise.....eeeeh....
Props to Mike, who was actually embarrassed to be shirtless during the Lord of the Dance bit.
He's in good shape actually, for a guy who sits around all day watching movies.
And deservedly so...🍖
Nothing to be ashamed about there . He should have had more shirtless scenes.
"I think he's missed the point of juggling."
Easily my favorite episode. Great riffs, and the film is just weird and high quality enough to be bearable to watch. So good.
Lol, bearable
"So the first plot point involves ... knitting socks. I think we're in for quite a ride here, guys!"
Can someone please do a 10 hr video of Michael being Lord of the Dance? Then it’d just end with Gypsy going “Oh...um, yAaAy?”
"Peter must be walkin' around denying everybody this morning"
Was not expecting a Biblical joke!
Oh wow, how did I miss that?
Werewolf had a few, with Natalie "asking" Paul, "Could the Colossians stand another letter?"
A lot of the episodes with priests and nuns in them, like The Screaming Skull and Girls Town, are full of religion jokes.
The bible joke is good, the Hildegard von Bingen joke is better.
LoneKharnivore What’s that a reference to?
Wohoo! It's the house of Baba Yaga! The famous chicken-legged cabin that walks around and only reveals its doors if you say the magic words!

how long will you go on watering? "i mean how dumb are you?" crow is hilarious!!! thank for sharing mst3k!!
One of my all-time favorite Crow riffs
I always loved the ending of this movie, riffed or not; just the satisfaction Nastia's father has over his wife's braggart nature about Marfushka coming back to bite her in the ass for her mean and self-centered nature as well as gaining his confidence back after his wife treated him like crap for so long and all the things she wanted done to Nastia.
Gotta say, Nastia's father always annoyed me because he let his wife bully his daughter. At least Cinderella's parents were dead! Nastia's dad just sat on his butt and cringed.
@@RanMouri82 Yeah, but at least he got his confidence back when he saw his wife get her comeuppance even if I woulda liked it much earlier
1:17:17 “Oh, a hockey game breaks out!!” I quote that every time a fight breaks out during a hockey game haha
Weird…I was watching that exact scene when I read this comment.
Of all the MST3K episodes I watched so far this is my absolute favorite!
Watching mst and reading the comments at a leisurely pace matches up surprisingly well with the commentary.
I'd love to see this as a live Rifftrax show; there's so many ways to riff this movie, and I bet Kevin would even dress up as the titular character
Horrible snow storm...so I stayed in and watched this---as good as I remember.
Loved the Tom Bombadillo reference
And "Frodo gets drunk and screws with his neighbors"
Lord of the Dance. Wow. That brings back memories.
"You keep KNITTING, Ahhand KNITTING, ah-and KNITTING!"

I wish MST3K featured more Soviet movies. They're perfect for riffing.

Nope, it’s perfect. I think this might be the most perfect episode of MST3K.

You know along with being one of my favorite MST3K episodes, this is really NOT a bad movie.
Odd and culturally outside it's intended audience, yes. But not bad.
I'd venture to say it's on the right side of actually being a GOOD movie.
Certainly the best movie to get the ol tom, crown and mike treatment!
You're right. Final Sacrifice was a decent film in some parts. It was called the most bearable of all the movies they watched.
It's a bizarre movie, but it's SO bizarre that it becomes charming and genuinely fun to watch.
There are MST3K movies that are so bad they're hard to sit through, but this is definitely one of the more watchable ones -- along with The Final Sacrifice and any of the Rocky Jones movies.
daftoptimist I really like Girls Town too
The true measure of a “good” MST3k movie is how entertaining it is without the riffing.
By that standard, this was a good MST3k movie.
you're goin down mushroom boy.....so many good jokes....ROTF!
“Ivanushka!”
“Try me on a plaza burger!”
“Hey ho Tom Bombadillo” 😂😂😂 love their making fun of the mushroom guy
I like the movie by it's self ! It's warm and cute, like a movie made by 5 year old's playing with kitten's .
+kevin bell Heck, I appreciate the fact that the clubs came down again. We got a set-up and the pay-off!
***** That was good . But they could have done more with the mushroom guy !
+kevin bell Agreed! I think this one is up there with The Final Sacrifice where it is watchable on its own.
I'm with you man. It's got some amazing charm, like the Russian Winnie the Pooh though that's good in general.
Yup, it's that time of year again. First major freeze of the season and it's time to rewatch this sweet cup of tea. I always watch this every year.
It's a Christmas day movie in the Czech Republic!
This movie has so many great riffs that there's too many to count. But "Peter must be walking around denying everyone!", " So the first plot point involves knitting socks. I think we're in for quite a ride, guys!" and "Okay, movie. We can wait as long as you can" had me screaming with laughter. This was the first MST3K movie I ever saw and it got me hooked.
heh, I never realised they called Baba Yaga "hunchback fairy"
“He wasn’t the hunchback fairy… He was the one you hire to kill the hunchback fairy.”
Honestly, I think this COULD have made a decent movie on its own. The fairy tale stuff is interesting, the protagonists are likeable, and the morals actually do hold up. Really, the only thing holding it back is the microscopic budget and short running time. Still one of my favorite episodes.
If you watch the DVD or remastered versions that are nice and colorful, it really is a charming movie. Great for kids.

You know... I can't believe I'm saying this, but this really isn't that bad. I'm sure in its original language it's a pretty decent kid's movie.
You're right, it's much better in russian, and it's actually a classic christmas/new year movie in Russia. I suppose it doesn't look that stupid if you know the mythology.
elanor2006 Or... maybe you’d know for sure if this was one long fairy tale or a mishmash of smaller ones. In any case, I can respect the level of attempted authenticity they give here.
It's good and poetic and I absolutely can't understand why they mocked leshiy леший, the forest's spirit. What's wrong with him? We never mocked fairies or elves.
@@elanor2006 yeah, alot of myths and fairy tales are hilariously stupid if you didnt grow up with them. My grandma had some pretty scary ones like the guy who cuts misbehaving childrens thumbs off which is hilarious the first tiem you hear it
Ehh every problem has no stakes and is solved near-instantly, giving no tension. The pacing flies without really setting up scenes or stakes, relationships are assumed with no build up or establishing and everyone is incredibly one-dimensional.
It suffers from all the problems of an archaic fairy-tale, namely in being stone age-simple so that anyone can understand it. There's a reason most fairy-tales have been adapted to being children stories.
Basically making fun of this movie is like making fun of Blue's Clues. That said this movie was definitely more charming than a lot of the stuff they riffed.
I love this lovely fairytale.
