I like how in this video some people are all like "they don't have social live" " there parents don't give them choices" or " they don't do anything else", when the fact of the matter is most people are going off of assumptions. I honestly don't think any of u have been to japan to actually know this. Just like the people saying American teens don't have good taste in music and that music isn't priority. I for one love music and started when I was 7.

For the first time in a long while, I heard this music.
It was composed by Yasushi Akutagawa, the third son of writer, Ryunosuke Akutagawa.
I have only seen this music by pretty old Video of NHK Symphony Orchestra.

I’ve watched a lot of the including elementary schools and they are fantastic. Don’t know why some negative comments were made. You can’t fault the performances and dedication. It wouldn’t work in the western world as any dedication is lacking, painting nails, boys burgers and hours at the mall. If you seriously want something you have to work at it

Such an orchestra would sound million times better.
This orchestra is a mere club activity of ordinary public junior high school.
They are not students of music school.
This conpetition is for clubs of ordinary schools but not for students majoring in music.

My favorite piece performed by any middle school... the tension builds up nicely, repetition is beautiful, the sharp sound of the strings combined with the soft glowing sound of the brass combines to make a phenomenal sound. There is mysteriousness hidden a quarter through the performance and it all comes alive a little before halfway. Oddly reminds me of my little days playing Pokémon hehe. Amazing performance and I aspire to be this great someday.

@musicchick581 I can't believe you'd attempt to discredit such an awesome performance. There was more musical expression in this orchestra than any high school's I've heard in the United States. My high school's performances were pathetic compared to this, and my university's orchestra would have a hard time holding up against a lot of these groups. Don't hate on these kids for their great abilities; simply acknowledge that there is a lot wrong with the music education system in the U.S.

True, it may not be fun for some, but there are many who have had an extensive musical background and enjoy playing daily.

You could not demand the workload these kids put in out of American kids. Principal of your school or the parents would shut you down. I found this out the hard way as a student teacher, as did my teaching proctor, a 25 year director in the Tennessee schools. He and I tried to get a group of junior high kids to improve by presenting music that was not over their head, but that had to be worked hard and practiced. Parents rebelled, I changed majors, and he " got retired" the next year.

@mbmaccin555555 I doubt it. But Japanese schools put emphasis on practicing one thing repeatedly. I used to play volleyball in jr/sr high schools in Japan. We practiced it ALL YEAR LONG. I was surprised when I came to the US in the middle of my high school years that the American kids play different sports during the different seasons. I thought, coming from Japan, that would make the players have the "Let's just get it done with" attitude. It's just a cultural difference.

You guys are leaving out important information on American schools. They have honor orchestras, all state orchestras, regionals, youth orchestras, and academies of music well known around the nation. The Midwest Clinic is in America and incorporates more American schools even though its an International conference. Just cus your school sucks doesn't mean others do.

  • @jupiterite3

I know what you are concerning about is not american student's ability but recent public educational program and social environment of america putting slight on music (especialy of orchestra or windband).
Orchestras of this level in pubulic schools are exceptional also in Japan. They depend on enthusiastic and voluntary individual devotion of teachers(they are not professional instructor) and students and supports of parents, schools and people in the community, which I want to praise.

Many of these students will end up in a music school
Japans eats and BREATHES concert band concert band : Japan :: Rap : America

Zachary McKinion, I taught English in Sapporo for 2 years. The comments about these kids having no social life or fun are pretty much dead on. These kids started with their instrument at age 4 or 5, have practiced their instrument for 20 hours a week since that time. Elementary and junior high ensembles usually work 4-5 pieces of music for an entire academic year (7 days a week, 3-4 hours a day, no Sunday holiday in this Buddhist culture) before performing it. They also have to maintain high academic grades, too. Most of them love music, but not much else. No time. I bet 3/4 of them have never seen a PlayStation, or watched much TV. They are studying, practicing, or sleeping. And, yes, their parents and teachers pressure the crap out of them to do well. Failure and laziness bring shame and harsh discipline from the parents and school. Didn't feel like practicing today and embarrassed yourself at rehearsal? You get dressed down in front of your peers and a note to your parents, who then spank you, shame you, and make you do double before bed. Totally different mindset than ours.
