This is so awesome to me because I started playing ice hockey when I was 14 and in the 8th grade (last year) and played house for a year and was pretty bad not going to lie but after a summer of skating hard and improvement I made my high school's team and we went to the state championship this year. I just wish I started the sport when i was younger so I could have a couple more years of this because I love it! I hope this kid goes places he has the determination.

That is so awesome. I am now 13 and have only been skating for a year. Tonight is my third ice hockey game. I have never played before and it has been a tough journey for me. I was told constantly by people who are now my fellow teammates that I would never be able to play. I watched many of these HowToHockey videos and they have helped me a lot. Weird thing is my name is Nick and as you can see the kid in the video is #5 and I am #5 on my hockey team. Thanks to the support of my family and friends and these videos, I can play the game I love!

Im fourteen. I've been paying house hockey for 3 years now. I really want to play travel but my parents don't have the time to drive me to games and practices. And of course money is also an issue. All the coaches say that I really should be in a travel league, but I guess I will just keep playing house and hope that something happens.

    • @howtohockeytraining
      @howtohockeytraining  10 років тому +43

That is part of it, travel hockey is a big commitment for the parents, both financially and time-wise. There are ways around it.
#1 - You need to have someone believe in you, this is usually done through either amazing talent, or at least a lot of dedication and commitment
#2 - For money you can usually do fundraising to pay your registration. If no fundraising exists you could always do odd-jobs (like I did) and pay for your own registration. When people know a young person is working towards a goal they will usually help. I've seen some kids do bottle drives, cutting grass, raking leaves, etc
#3 - For the time commitment once you are on the team the people are usually very helpful. This works out well for car pooling to games and practices.

Hey Jeremy, thought I'd share my story too. I started hockey when I was 11 and I was awful until my second year of midget. In my first year of midget I had one assist all year. But then I stumbled on your pavel datsyuk stickhandling video and I subscribed and built a skills training guide with your videos and did the shooting challenge a couple years back. The next year in house I scored 30-40 goals and ripped it up. In my third year of midget I was cut from the AA team and played A where I continued to work on my game and improve watching your videos. By the end of the year I had become good enough where the AAA players from my organization were not as good as me, and I got some junior B camp invites and a main camp invite. I didn't make the team I tried out for but I'm going back this year where I'm pretty sure I have a good chance. I wouldn't have made it this far without your videos, thanks man! cheers!

Thank you so much Jeremy!!

I started hockey at 11, and made high school hockey at 14.. I don’t play anymore at 17, health issues gone wrong witch makes it hard too live a normal life, hard too get up everyday and do get too school, I got diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, but I still enjoy watching and seeing hockey videos, I plan on trying out for JR. B next year, after I go on treatment, anyone can be a great hockey player, just gotta put the time and effort and patience, and you’ll get too your goal 💯

i started about 7 months ago and made the jv team as a junior. hoping i can make varsity if i keep improving but i’m just happy to be playing. this is definitely my favorite sport i’ve ever played and i absolutely love it. i’m so fortunate to be playing the greatest game in the world, even if i’m not that good. i still have to learn to stop on my weak side and get better at skating but i think i’m definitely improving and helping my team, even if i can’t score a goal.

Me and my dad went to the rink, it was the first time for me to stand on ice for a very long time, it was really really har for me, i told my dad that i wanted to start play hockey.. but he said no, i was 11 years old then, and now i am 12, i went to hockey school. the trainers told me i looked good on the skates. ofcourse because iv'e trained alot on my spirit time.. and now im here, i can do every move in hockey. i'm proud of my self.

keeping it modest, its true I started at 15 and made captain of my high school team by 18 senior year. I tell you everyone was better than me, but if you put in the work and have the passion you can excel faster than anyone who becomes complacent and thinks they're good enough already. The truth is you never stop improving if you set a new goal for yourself every time you're on the ice. Keep it up nick!

I live in Ontario and after watching his hockey clips I just think back and realize that the rink I go to for house league at bantam level is do much more advances than his. I almost make the select team every year but I don't. House league is starting back up in 5 months so I'm training now as hard as I can to make it to select and eventually up to hub or single A. I turn 14 in a week and I started 2 months ago at 13. My grandpa signed me up for learn to play lessons. Every one is 4-7 and I’m twice their size but that doesn’t stop me. I already learned how to stop and skate, and now I can pass and shoot. My grandpa loves the Bruins, along with my uncle and my dad liked the Whalers when they were in Hartford (when he was still alive.) It’s been a year and a half since I’ve been obsessed with this sport. I told myself that I would only make the men’s league but my coaches are telling me I’ll make the varsity team at my high school next year and my grandpa says I’ll make it to the nhl. Thank you Jeremy for your helpful videos. Thanks to you, I’ve been able to come a long way in such a short time with so little.

5 years ago, I played my first season of hockey at age 7 (I'm 12 now). I was just playing tier 6 house league. There was one year where I almost was placed on the worse team in my organization. I played for fun and just enjoyed it. Last summer, I said to my dad after a camp "Dad, I want to play more...competitively,". He said "Well, you never know,"
Fast forward to this season (2013-14) and I was trying out for my rep team. Somehow, I got past the first round of cuts. "Omg, I actually got past it," Then, I got past the second round of cuts. "I actually have a legitimate chance of making the team," I was waiting in the hallway, to enter the coaches room. I was one of the first ones to go in, and somehow, they said I made it on the team.
So I went from playing tier 6 hockey, trying to make it one level higher, to playing on a Peewee AA team against some of the best players in the province. I got to go to the Alberta Winter Game tryouts, and now I'm vying for a Bantam AAA spot.
Long story short, a lot can change in one year. There was a few times where the coaches said "This kid came from the lowest tier, and he's being one of the best players on the ice. He's showing work ethic, and not giving up," Probably sound cocky, but this past year has been life changing.

Great story. Great advice and great site Jeremy. My little guy is 4 years old, he's been skating since he was 3. His love of the game comes from him alone. I grew up playing and obsessed with basketball. But my son got a mini-stick set at 2 1/2 and never let it go. I want to share in my kid's love of the game, so I've been watching your videos so I can skate along with him this winter and I'll be joining an adult learn to play hockey program here in Toronto. Your site has been an incredible resource, from learning how to tape a stick to the intricacies of the game. I'm in love with the game now, and have probably watched more hockey in the last 2 years than I have in 35 years :) Wishing you all the best and success with the site and your business. You deserve it!

I dropped out of AAA and playing select. It’s so fun just scoring 5 goals a game and having fun with no competition.

    I started 1 month before I turned 15. Well, I'm still 15. Didn't score
any goals as a freshman in HS. Assists? Maybe 12. Never too late. I
played roller hockey for 5 years and didn't step into ice skates until
my 14th birthday. Didn't fall once. I didn't touch a puck on ice until
less than a year ago. We just won the State championship, plan on doing
Varsity next season. Not bragging, just sharing my story about how you
can do anything you set your mind to :)

Dany Heatley that's great! You don't have to listen what others are saying, you don't have to be Connor mcdavid at age 15. Just pick what your good at and really hammer those down. As long as you are effective in some way on the ice, it doesn't matter how good you are

I've been playing street hockey my whole life and always loved it and then 2 years ago I wanted to play ice so I started Dek Hockey leagues and moved my way up practicing skating which I was really bad at first but after a year and a half and 2 seasons of Bantam House League with 8 Goals and 2 Assists 4 Blocked Shots +/- 6 in 14 games i'm playing on my Schools Varsity team and still pushing everyday to try and make college hockey. Trust me when I say my parents aren't rich whatsoever and I had to work my way up as much as possible. Some people even said I worked way too hard but if you want something that bad hard work and dedication get you there.

From my experience you must choose, I started hockey at 18 in Uni at the UK, along with jiu jitsu and a few other things. By second year, I was playing about 10 hours a week and did not have enough time for the other things so they had to be dropped, its your choice but I would put all of your eggs into one basket if you want to truly excel

I've wrestled my whole like until this past winter when I decided that I wanted to give hockey a go, I played pond hockey every single day and spend countless hours skating and shooting pucks, some of my friends who have been playing their whole lives talked me into playing high school hockey this next season, I've been preparing all summer just trying to do anything I can to improve. Let's just say I have all the heart in the world and I love the game. I can't wait to lace up and go score some goals!!

I play at Brick this year but I played AA Titans last year I'm a first year bantam right now and I've probably been on the ice with you at some point. My names Seamus (Sheamus is how it's pronounced) so ya. Good luck in ur season this year if ur on Titans, wildcats, brick, or redbank. hope to see ya around.

i started hockey last year. I'm fourteen now, and trying to make a high school hockey team. I try to believe in myself, and i just found out that one of my friends was cut from the same team. He started when he was two years old. I understand that believing in yourself is a huge part, but it baffles me that my friend was cut, and it kinda worries me.

I was a mite in house and my parents told me about this travel tryout for the "Ice Jets" so I went not even expecting to make any of the A AA or AAA teams so I did the tryouts and 30 mins later the lists for the 3 teams came out I looked for my number on the A team first not there the AA team not there and then the AAA team and there it was in the middle of the list I was shocked so I signed my contract and had one of my best seasons on that team. I just wanted to share this and also say that you're videos are a big part of my skill set today and I want to thank you so much Coach Jeremy.

Jeremy I have the same decision to make. I’m 12 and the season will start. I would just be entering bantams. I’ve been watching your videos and getting on the ice as much as I can.

You’re gonna do great, you can’t be better than everyone but you can be more dedicated than everyone. Just work on anything you can to build strength; any kind of work out like hiking or running will help. Work on your shot, even if you don’t have a net, just shoot at the garage door. Your dad will yell at you but that’s a small price to pay if you love the game. Good luck. I’m a Bantam this year (I was supposed to be one last year but the cut me to Peewees because I simply wasn’t ready) and I love the sport enough to know I’ll be playing my whole life, even though I’ll never have the time or money for travel. You’re doing great getting on the ice. That’s what you need. The best of luck to you, dude.

I played when I was little in house and local, then for four years I was a goalie after that, I skipped a year of bantam and decided to lace up my skates and be a forward in major bantam local league. this year I play midget local, and I've improved since the last year but I still don't know how im gonna get into the higher levels because I branched off from a forward a long time ago and only came back two years ago.

Hey coach! I'd like to know what type of environment was he in to achieve the rate of progression that he did? How often was he on the ice a week? What type of training did he have who was training him?

    • @xxpat26xx35
      @xxpat26xx35 4 роки тому

I play 14u AAA, I'll just tell you what I do. 4-5 off-ice sessions a week (A healthy mix of conditioning and weights), 3-4 (closer to 8 for tourneys and showcases) skates a week, dieting - if I have a weightlifting day I drink protein shakes after my workouts. Don't forget work other than that in the gym, stick handling drills help a lot. If you're looking for someone to train with, try to find someone that specializes in sport training.
