I'm a NZ citizen arrived in the country 9 years ago. The last 4 years the government has done everything to make me want to leave. We are a couple with two kids and we have work our asses off to buy a house. The cost of living crisis have made our quality of life decrease almost to the level we were experiencing in our native country. Heaps of people argue "is the pandemic" but how come I don't see people in other countries with our same professional experience struggling the same. Less inflation, better housing, more affordable living???? I believe if the government doesn't change next term NZ is going to experience an exodus.

I'm a New Zealander, I moved to Australia 13 years ago. New Zealand hasn't been the same since 2008. I loved every bit of it while growing up, but as soon as I became an adult reality hit me! New Zealand is for rich people who wants to retire and relax. It's only for people who can run a business and pay high tax. It's not for average people who wants to make an income or build a career. New Zealand lacks flexibility in *every possible way.* Whether it's jobs, living, renting, buying, products, food and lifestyle. Everything is just so limited. It's so boring. People are so narrow minded. You can clearly tell the difference how depressed and boring people are when you go for a holiday from Australia. I went back home many times, and every time I dealt with a mentally ill individual. New Zealand has higher rate of mentally ill people due to isolation. It's just nature and beauty which I admire the most, but the cost of living is ridiculous! As much as I love my country, I also think it needs a system reset. It needs more culture and vibrancy. It needs more flexibility and open-minded people. The country needs more resources and new possibilities.

You hit the bull's eye there, mate! What's the use of beautiful nature if you can't have enough to put food on the table? Other countries have gorgeous nature as well. Switzerland and other EU countries have alpine mountains, for example, and one can visit another country on a weekend. Something new, even for a couple of days.

She is spot on. The immigration put me on a queue for 3yrs to get my residency. They rejected my work permit application 4x because my job was apprentice electrician, and they kept giving me false hope by saying "keep trying". And most of all the staff were rude and snobb on the phone and in person eventhough they were also immigrants from India&other countries. They look down on immigrant applicants. The reason we have the second or third most expensive housing in the world, is because we had numerous waves of immigration. without increasing our housing stock. The Lange-Douglas government of the 1980's, decided to double the population in order to create a larger domestic market. The cost of living is too high in NZ. When Winston Peters tried to point all of this this out 25 years ago, he was of course labeled a racist.

A good measure of how attractive a country is, is how are young people doing. Well, people in there 20's/30's here have no hope of owning a home, probably can never have kids unless they want to live in perpetual poverty, and are having more and more of their pathetic pay taken by landlords/supermarkets/banks/taxes. Why is it that despite knowing so many people in professional careers, none of us are 'doing well'. We are all just 'getting by'. And that is with the support network of growing up here, that is with intimate knowledge of our culture/rules/advantages. For someone coming here with none of that, it is even harder. There is no way in hell I would ever recommend someone coming here. You will be in for a bad time.

My wife is a South african pharmacist with a 4 year pharmacy degree and 15 years of experience working in 3 tertiary hospitals. She cannot work here, she has to write 2 kaps exams which involves a lot of studying, do a 16 week course with university of Auckland, then do a 6 month internship before she can work...inz and the professional bodies need to understand that the skill you want to bring in, the real hard workers who will stay, come from the 3rd world.. But hey I guess they would want the skill to come in from Europe, America etc.. But those professionals seek where the salary is best, also a big reason why people in droves are moving to Australia vs nz. If inz want to get immigration right, start dialog with the professional bodies to be less prescriptive on those qualified, skilled and experienced workers coming from developing countries

The problem is just how difficult the Govt makes it to actually try and immigrate. I have 2.5 decades of senior level Management experience and yet don't qualify for in demand jobs. Ok, so I'll start my own Business then. I have 100% of the 100K NZ funding required (which you get 0 points for the 120 required if you ONLY have a little over the 100K) but NZ age discriminates and I barely get any points for being over 40. I also get zero points because I haven't operated the Business I'd open in NZ (which MUST be innovative and be shown that nobody in NZ already offers that) for at least 5 years somewhere else.
It's like those Job ads you see for an "Entry Level this or that" but the Company requires you have a Master Degree and 10 years experience. It's a complete joke.

Its been detrimental the the labour market....there no carpenters, tradies to keep up with the construction industry demands and since there is slow progress in building new homes, prices of homes just keep going up. In agriculture, certain fruits and vegetables have been left out to rot in the fields because there is not enough fruit pickers to get them into super markets. Add to the flooding problems, the cost of fruit and veges has sky rocketed in Australia...thats just on top of nursing, teaching shortages. The Australian govt has increased its migrant intake by 30k but that will take time to alleviate the labor shortage. But luckily for Australia there is higher wages

Post pandemic world realizes that family is so important, they want to be with their loved ones and have great memories. The rentals in NZ are on the higher side like $2500 per month even in Tier 2 cities as it is a weekly payment, and then food another $500, broadband $125, electricity $200, gas for heating and cooking $200, water bill $200, vehicle insurance $200, fuel $500, and the median wage is $25/hour and most companies are small in size and cannot afford to pay more than 20-30hrs/week. So rest of the math is pretty easy for any prospective migrant to decide. One more important piece of information, if there is an advert for a single rental apartment vacancy in NZ even in a tier 2 city there would be 400-500 applications for that one unit, housing is very tightly managed, it is almost a mafia controlled business there making sure only the landlords and real estate companies become millionaires hahahahaha. However if you are a plumber, farmer, kiwi fruit plucker/packer, strawberry picker, cow dung cleaner, cow milk sucking device expert, lawn mower, welder, fitter, brick layering laborer or an expert latrine cleaner, you would get a Permanent Residence quite easily due to the locals never liking these tough physical jobs. But keep in mind the 7000$-10000$ per month minimum expenses and your PR card alone would not take care of your family right ? Hence please plan carefully as an annual income of more than 55000$ would attract a 30% tax, which by the way will make your partners working mandatory for most families. However if you are investing in health and retirement and have about $500000 at your disposal it is a great place to get lots and lots of oxygen, greenery and sound sleep as it is a country with just miles and miles of countryside everywhere outside Auckland...

I’m a Brit about to move to NZ. Good discussion, but these migrant / highly skilled worker problems are global, not just in New Zealand. The UK has record levels of employment, but huge skills gaps and it’s a heated market for experienced candidates. Post Brexit, we have lost access to EU migrants and now looking further afield to attract talent (yes that includes NZ - so it’s a competition)
The real problem here isn’t corporate / white collar - it’s blue collar / logistics / manual Labour / healthcare . The simple way to attract people to those roles is to pay better than the minimum wage or even offer starting bonus linked to retention / performance. This will increase costs to the consumer, so it’s it’s a choice between higher prices / lower quality / unavailability.
The government can help with visa processing times, but more important is access to affordable housing. If New Zealand government & business can’t or won’t do these things, other countries will and todays problem becomes a generational one.

National wants more low paid workers through increased immigration, create more low paid service and consumer based businesses, cut taxes and reduce government spending. It raises the question, if National is the government in 2023 and introduces tax cuts and reduce government spending, where are they going to find the money to pay for new nurses, doctors, specialised health professionals, age care workers, skilled workers, etc they say the New Zealand needs, let has no plans to the national housing stock, upgrade aging infrastructure, solve the cost of living crisis, inflation, out of control rents, etc.

Then the big complicated problem is that after 3 years of permanent residence they could use StudyLink to get a loan which they ultimately have to pay back to do FURTHER study and migrate somewhere else. What is the problem with that? Good on them.
People have the right to do what is better for them just like "Kiwis". Where do you get off?
Not everyone migrates again when they come to NZ and some do. Who cares? I think you might be a tiny bit jealous.

Teaching in (government schools) in Australia, remains a unionised, protectionist racket run by the AEU. It has the ludicrous practice of employing "contracted" staff who are rarely given full time contracts. They are expected to accept postings (rarely more than a year at best) in regional and remote schools that are hard to staff. Additionally, nobody gets a "full time" contract. Any dissent, is treated as treasonous, and you will feel the result of unemployment if found out and identified.
