The guy who's the CEO started the store as a thrift and local artisan store with his super cool hippie girlfriend. When they broke up, he wanted to make it commercial, bought out her share, become really conservative and homophovic and started Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie too
@mywadi Cool Hippie Girlfriend's name is Judy Wicks and she's still doing awesome farm-to-table restaurants and building local economies. I got to hear The Free People's Store (what it was originally called) story from her when she spoke at a work development thing.
When I used to work at Marshalls we would get in Free People for dirt cheap, so i have quite a few items in my closet and i love many of them due to the fact that they're made for tall people (and me being 5'11 I'll take what i can get) But that being said i certainly wouldnt have bought any of them if it would have cost me more than the 5-25 (CAD) i paid for each
Went to Free People for the first time recently, never heard of the store before and i walked around so CONFUSED😂 The clothes looked ‘worn’ and thrifted almost and i had the shock of my life when seeing the pricetag😵
I have a dress from there that is 15 years old and looks really good still 🤷 Definitely worth the price tag but it was not really hippy ish just a style that never goes out
@@JPayne-ul4qd I get them second hand for much better prices. I dont care if it was worn before or has some signs of wear. Who cares? I like the idea of giving clothes a second life and the signs of wear are never that bad lol
@@Amila-ym7ny They won't make it second hand in my area. But I'm a bargain hunter to my core. So I'll walk away from a price tag if I deem it too expensive for the fabric. Those are the times I wished it could be second hand 😢.

You know what? When things go to sale they already been through a lot of hands, the pieces that are holding up in sale usually will hold up after too. That’s what I’ve noticed. That’s why I feel it’s risky to buy these overpriced brands at full price, one may be buying a piece of trash for too much money. When they are on sale, not only they are cheaper, they also proved to stand the proof of a little time and tossing around. (This applies to in real life purchases obviously, not online purchases).
As someone who sees a lot of my own clothes, viscose is my absolute favorite fabric. It’s soooo comfortable and the drape is beautiful. I don’t even care that it wrinkles; cotton and linen wrinkle too. And any sewer knows the absolute most important part of any sewing project is the pressing, so I’ve never minded ironing.
@@judithtejeda911 I mean y'all get it if you're happy with it! I just got a hella cute dress off Amazon for $35. I'm not paying that much for a tank top or $60 for a crop top. If you're happy tho, I'm happy for you
I’ll buy some things on sale from time to time because they do have some interesting and decent quality clothes. You just have to pay attention to the details of the item and decide if it’s worth it. But I’ve gotten some great pieces that I’ve had for years from there.
Saw that these dresses are made in India, and I guarantee you, I can find the same clothes in our local Indian markets (especially Delhi and Mumbai) selling even less than a dollar.
I used to work for their sister-stores!! they're both owned by URBN and a lot of the in house brands tend to feature garments that are very poorly made. if you buy loungewear under the "out from under" label, expect a lot of pilling. and one time when I was manning the fitting rooms, a customer was talking to me about a pair of pants she was handing back. she liked the style, but told me that almost all of those pants in her size (one of the most common sizes) and others on the rack had broken zippers, saying "I like how they look so maybe I should just order them online". ummmm....yeah.... she way really nice, so I leaned over and whispered to her that if so many pairs of those pants had a broken zipper than it must be poor quality. if she orders them online the zipper is probably going to break on those, and I do not recommend the purchase.
I have a couple shirts with intentional frayed edges that are great for a casual summer outfit, but what you really want to look for with them is a set of double parallel stitches along every edge to stop the fraying from going any further Edit: I noticed this one is cut on a bias so it should (somewhat) prevent too much unraveling, but it still won't be as durable as is they put a retaining stich along the edges
I used to work there ! And it’s all about the vintage / dessert boho vibes meaning a ton of like one off weird prints to mix and match. Most important to remember for anyone going there is the goal of the brand is LAYERING Don’t just buy the crop top and jeans - you buy the long sleeve under the crop top the cool shawl the belts the jeans etc . They do that to sell way more versus like Ralph Lauren that does sets or maybe a cool sweater over a shirt and pants . They do all this layering in their catalogue
And after one wash this clothes from Thailand would be a disaster, I've seen it so many times. So even the lower price isn't worth creating rubbish so quickly
I took sewing in junior high and high school and now I can't deal with the super high prices on clothing made of cheap fabrics and cheap/poor construction., but I don't sew anymore. Ugh.
I’ve had a free people shirt that my mom bought at Macy’s for nearly 10 years. It’s 100% cotton and the edges are frayed. It’s a cool look but not something I would pay $100+ for.
Spend $2 on a thrifted granny dress and $2 for a shirt pattern then do some sewing and you’d get a blouse just as nice as those without havin to pay $170 💀
I know a girl that worked for Free People. She told me that often times when designing the clothes, they would go to vintage shops/thrift stores for “inspiration”, and make the Free People item look like the vintage pieces, basically copying it. Pretty wild!
You can go to ANY Platos Closet or consignment shop where I live and find a ton of Free People/We The Free clothes for like $10+. That’s where I get all my stuff haha
Free people is very hit or miss and doesn’t really hold its value second hand. I love them and own so many Free People items and I’ve bought all of them second hand for way cheaper than whatever they retailed for

I just subbed to your channel, and I've noticed that you are a lot like me about clothes. Always check the tags, always check the seams, etcetera. You're doing a great job educating people, keep it up!
I only go for the embroidered blouse or dresses from free people, and usually because I like a certain design from there. I quite hate print design clothes, and the material is not worth spending money on. But I like to see the layering outfit they create on the models. Some layering clothes are worth investing in. To be honest, if you have time and patience, I only recommend you to get the clothes thifted. That's how I got some of the clothes from there, all of which are in nearly new condition.
Thank you for being honest about viscose!!! It is by far my LEAST favorite fabric and they use it for everything now. It basically makes disposable garments.
Everything at free people looks like it was found in a forgotten warehouse at best, and made in a wretched sweat shop at worst. Horrible quality in so many of its pieces.
We can send people to space, but we can't figure out how to make clothing sustainable and more cost effective. That doesn't include modern day sleeves.

I loathe Rayon viscose ☠️ it's plastic made from pulp whether that's bamboo or not. Modal is from Birch tree pulp etc which gets plastized 😢 The base material for modal rayon is cellulose from hardwood trees like birch and oak, but this raw tree material goes through a complex manufacturing process before it is rendered into a weavable fiber. This version of rayon represents a significant evolution in the history of this fabric.
I was a customer of Free People for many years and bought some quality clothes years ago. However, purchases in recent years have been disappointing at best. They have gone downhill.
