  • Vincent van Gogh: A collection of 825 paintings (HD)
Description: "Vincent van Gogh, one of the most well-known post-impressionist artists, for whom color was the chief symbol of expression, was born in Groot-Zundert, Holland on March 30, 1853.
The son of a pastor, brought up in a religious and cultured atmosphere, Vincent was highly emotional, lacked self-confidence and struggled with his identity and with direction. He believed that his true calling was to preach the gospel; however, it took years for him to discover his calling as an artist. Between 1860 and 1880, when he finally decided to become an artist, van Gogh had already experienced two unsuitable and unhappy romances and had worked unsuccessfully as a clerk in a bookstore, an art salesman, and a preacher in the Borinage (a dreary mining district in Belgium) where he was dismissed for overzealousness.
He remained in Belgium to study art, determined to give happiness by creating beauty. The works of his early Dutch period are somber-toned, sharply lit, genre paintings of which the most famous is "The Potato Eaters" (1885). In that year van Gogh went to Antwerp where he discovered the works of Rubens and purchased many Japanese prints.
In 1886, he went to Paris to join his brother Théo, the manager of Goupil's gallery. In Paris, van Gogh studied with Cormon, inevitably metPissarro, Monet, and Gauguin. Having met the new Impressionist painters, he tried to imitate their techniques; he began to lighten his very dark palette and to paint in the short brushstrokes of the Impressionists’ style. Unable to successfully copy the style, he developed his own more bold and unconventional style.
In 1888, Van Gogh decided to go south to Arles where he hoped his friends would join him and help found a school of art. At The Yellow House, van Gogh hoped like-minded artists could create together. Gauguin did join him but with disastrous results. Van Gogh’s nervous temperament made him a difficult companion and night-long discussions combined with painting all day undermined his health. Near the end of 1888, an incident led Gauguin to ultimately leave Arles. Van Gogh pursued him with an open razor, was stopped by Gauguin, but ended up cutting a portion of his own ear lobe off. Van Gogh then began to alternate between fits of madness and lucidity and was sent to the asylum in Saint-Remy for treatment.
In May of 1890, after a couple of years at the asylum, he seemed much better and went to live in Auvers-sur-Oise under the watchful eye of Dr. Gachet. Two months later, he died from what is believed to have been a self-inflicted gunshot wound "for the good of all." During his brief career, he did not experience much success, he sold only one painting, lived in poverty, malnourished and overworked. The money he had was supplied by his brother, Theo, and was used primarily for art supplies, coffee and cigarettes.
Van Gogh's finest works were produced in less than three years in a technique that grew more and more impassioned in brushstroke, in symbolic and intense color, in surface tension, and in the movement and vibration of form and line. Van Gogh's inimitable fusion of form and content is powerful; dramatic, lyrically rhythmic, imaginative, and emotional, for the artist was completely absorbed in the effort to explain either his struggle against madness or his comprehension of the spiritual essence of man and nature.
In spite of his lack of success during his lifetime, van Gogh’s legacy lives on having left a lasting impact on the world of art. Van Gogh is now viewed as one of the most influential artists having helped lay the foundations of modern art."

I'm trying to paint like monsieur Van Gogh, his technique is unmistakable and very complex. When I was a younger man, I thought the impressionist painters were just lazy and, well, not very good painters. But as I have grown older I see they were simply trying something new and different. I've grown to love their works so much that I've found myself trying to copy them. Wish me luck.

About 20 years ago drove up I5 from Portland to Seattle to view a traveling collection, complained of the 140 miles. You can guess the rest. Couldn't leave the museum. Looked right into his eyes (the portrait in red, strokes so thick his beard trapped shadow in its folds) - and melted. Great artist. Great man. Too bad there's no heaven: he would be at the door. And how fitting: Beethoven's 7th, greatness honors greatness.

What's most revealing about this amazing man are the portraits. There"s no polish, just raw honesty. He opened so many doors for others to follow; right up to this day.

Reading Van Gogh's letters, speaking so humble + moderate about himself, he apparently could never imagine that his name would be almost synonimous to painting art in general, equal to Rembrandt van Rhijn, or even stronger.

Imagine such beautiful paintings without the use of a camera to view (after) the sun sets, or after the ox and cart have moved on to the village. Many artists of today take a photo to remember what it is they are painting, but to be able to visualize it all from memory is a sign of true genius!

      I'm also an Artist 🎨
And like Van Gogh....I'm also Crazy 🤪...
Anywho....according to the Documentarians, he was a fast painter, he would attack the canvas with paint, that's why he was able to capture the moment and the feeling so quickly.
And yeah....he was a hard working genius, who all he really wanted....was understanding and a pinch of Love.

I think the reality that an artist can live his whole life in abject poverty and posthumously sell a painting for 80 million dollars is undoubtedly exploitive.. Why is it worth so much more after death. That someone's painstaking inspiration and talent results in immense joy and financial reward for someone else when it obviously didn't do the artist justice while he was alive. Its remarkable isn't it.

As this collection demonstrates, Vincent was often extremely clumsy. Yet even the early stuff had a lot of character. The ones featuring fruit, bowls of flowers, shoes, fish are just okay, although I admire him for being as inclusive as possible. Some of the portraits are quite powerful, but I feel that Vincent at his very best can be seen in the late landscape paintings . "The Harvest", "Wheatfield with Reaper", "Wheatfield with Crows", his works featuring cypresses , starry nights, and irises all come to mind. Sublime. He became truly great in the last year or two of his life.

What a fabulous collection of Van Gogh's works!
So many that I have never seen - that made it especially exciting for me!
I do have one suggestion. Though his work is often dark and heavy handed, most of it is colorful and even playful. The music at times overpowered the art, perhaps taking away from its beauty. I would have preferred lighter sound.
Still,I thoroughly enjoyed the video. I'm inspired. I will definitely watch it again and again.!

Now, I would like the artists to continue trying new things, even if they are not appreciated.

The subject turned to Art and I said Vincent van Gogh was a genius who saw the world differently, she being a catholic tried to ridicule him and his mental state, I replied who was this freak Leonardo da Vinci who most likey never made love to woman.

Amazing. Of course Van Gogh but also Monet, Klimt and all the other painters - up to ones personal taste. But I think what all amazing painters had and have in common is they don't see the world with their eyes. It's with their heart and soul, they feel it. And that is why so many painters but also true and serious musicians become depressed. Firstly, they doubt themselves and secondly the most people can not understand them because they look with their eyes (or listen with their ears) only. I would love to hear paintings (also music) explained not from only the point of art and history but also from some psychotherapist/psychologist or similar (unsure which professional would do best here). Perhaps some idea for someone vlogging?

I love your observation about the heart and soul of the artist. In my humble opinion, from experience, an expressive therapist might have some insight. Then again, Van Gogh, for instance, left us quotes.

Love the Vincent slide show. He was SO incredibly prolific! "In just over a decade he created approximately 2100 artworks" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_van_Gogh). I love Beethoven too, but the piano transcription of his Symphony no. 7 is a bit jarring for what should be a calm, meditative visual experience.
