Dear Ruby, I have a request❤️ Would you like to do a video to introduce Emily’s poetry? I am a huge fan of literature but know so little about poetry and I would really like to know “where to start”, maybe other people feel the same way? Thank you in advance and in general thank you for all the beautiful content you publish here❤️
Ruby will have a much better answer re. Emily Dickinson specifically I’m sure, but one thing I started doing a few months ago is read a poem a day. I have the Norton Anthology of Poetry (there are lots of other great anthologies and websites, too) and each day, I choose a poem at random and read it. I don’t always have spare time, but when I do, I do a bit of background research into the poet and make notes. Consistency is key, and I feel like I’m getting a whole education in poetry 1) for free and 2) with very little extra effort. Oh and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the idea for ”a poem a day” is something I got from Benjamin McEvoy here on youtube. Do check out his channel if you’re interested in exploring literature a little deeper.
Yes, this would be a great idea, and what I was getting at in my comments. I'd hoped there would have been some of that in this video, but a dedicated video would be fabulous.
even if the house wasn't a pilgrimage place, you are allowed to feel it that way and enjoy the experience on a personal level as you are doing, and no one can tell you otherwise. I love how unapologetically excited and passionate you are. I know nothing about Emily Dickinson and although I'm not into poetry, at least I am now interested to know more about her.
I toured the Robert Frost farm and that was wonderful. It was October and I collected a few maple leaves to press in my sketchbook. Something that I cherish.
As a Massachusetts native, I had no idea this was here! Thank you for allowing me (us) to explore Massachusetts through your eyes. Can't wait to go visit not only the Emily Dickinson house but Ipswich too.
I've never been to Massachusetts but it seems like a beautiful- and progressive state. Just read it's illegal to detoe cats there. I hope you enjoy your visit.
Ruby, your videos sort of reconnect me to this other side of myself that was lost in the process of growing older and not making the best choices for myself. When I was younger I read a LOT, and although there was a period of time in school where I was depressed and lost my curiosity, after graduating I started to get it back, and I read lots of classic works in my early 20's. I turned to truck driving at age 25 just as a way to survive financially and unfortunately because truck drivers can legally work 70 hours a week, and much of our time that is logged off duty is also spent doing work related activities, reading has been a challenge in the years since. I often find it difficult to concentrate to read a physical book (I have listened to a lot of audiobooks). But I share some of your interests, such as I'm a big tea drinker, I love being in nature and the countryside, I love bookshops and thrift stores and antique stores, and books. I had almost become completely disconnected from the younger me who used to read Dickens, the Brontes, Jane Austen, Edith Wharton, Fitzgerald, and many others. You are an impressive and very inspiring young lady and I know your parents must be so proud of you. I think you are such a great role model for other young people, and I believe you have a bright future ahead of you!
Thanks for what you said! I think that the most important thing in life is to be honest with ourselves and listen without negative judgement to what our Heart is telling us. From then on, the best thing we can do is take our Desire seriously. It is what moves us! Maybe the circumstances in which you are now are no longer as favourable as years ago to find time to read and cultivate this part of you, but it is NEVER said the last word! If you feel it’s important to you, I’m sure you can find a way (even small and occasional) to bring some beauty into your life. There is always a way! Even though sometimes it requires commitment and a little sacrifice. That said, I wish you all the best on this journey! P.S. Please forgive me if there is any mistake or if some thought is not expressed correctly: English is not my first language
When I was a teenager and in my early twenties I always kept a tiny (like 2 by 3 inch) book of Emily's potery with me at all times, in a pocket or near me on my work desk. It had a soft powder blue velvetine cover and beige textured pages that were all cut uneven. I remember sneaking peeks at it when I was supposed to be working. I felt a connection to her even though I was so young and quite punkish. I will forever have a soft spot in my heart for her and her work, so I really appreciate you giving us a tour and sharing what you learned.
Being from Massachusetts I was obsessed with Emily Dickinson and she was one of the reasons I wanted to be a poet. But as the years have gone by I lost that. You have reignited my love for her and poetry!
The card catalogue was the highlight of the video for me! I'm currently at college in Canada, studying to be a library technician, and cataloguing is a huge part of what I'm learning! It's obviously all digital these days, but we have learned a bit about card catalogues, and it was so interesting to see one here! From a (hopeful) future cataloguer, I just wanna say that I love the content you share, and this video was absolutely gorgeous and so enthralling!
It's interesting for me to see how some poets and writers live in much larger houses than I had thought they would have. For example when I first heard of the Bronte Family, I had imagined they lived in a small humble cottage, nothing fancy, but was taken aback to see such a fine house, although the setting would have been somewhat meagre in Victorian times. I was surprised by Emily Dickisons home it was much larger then I had expected!
So sorry that the video ended...I love this bookish travel blog format( it perfectly blends my passion for tavelling and books)...you've been so lucky to have this experience Ruby. I learnt quite a few things about this poet, so thanks for sharing. I hope you''ll always keep on being who you are and staying true to yourself. 😘
I love how when I visit an author's world it's like a travelled back in time. It's such a magical thing and I hate when people down play how amazing it truly is.
Fantastic, and incredibly informative! I love how you are positively beaming throughout. Thank you for posting the tips in the vid where you got to spend time writing in her room. I found those very helpful. As for the cantankerous commenter about it being "just a house"...well, it's their loss. Keep feeling that spirit! The world is a better place with connected souls like yours.
As a current UMass Amherst student I'm so glad you enjoyed your time out here! I'm so sad that I missed you! I can confirm that the number of squirrels here is outrageous as well. I will say that if you ended up staying over a weekend I hope you were careful, this place isn't known as "the zoo" for nothing and it gets absolutely crazy. As a senior English major I'm a little ashamed to admit that I've never been to the museum; poetry has never been my thing. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay out here and I hope you come back soon! I would recommend visiting WEB Dubois library in the center of campus- it's 26 floors and just across from South College which is the home of the English and other arts and humanities departments(also procrastination station is supposed to be really good food).
Someone I'm close got her degree in Amherst and I'm so excited you could visit! Visiting The Dickinson Homestead and writing where Emily wrote is definitely a pilgrimage! It's been on my bucket list! I really loved Ipswich and Salem so I'm happy you were able to visit those places as well!
Funnily enough, I was at Emily Dickinson’s house on that Thursday and saw you. I thought to myself “that looks like Ruby Granger”, but at the time I had no idea you were in the country much less at the same place, so immediately dismissed the thought. Wish I had said hello now! It’s a wonderful place to visit, and I highly recommend it to others.
What an amazing trip for you! So incredible to know you are walking where Emily Dickinson walked and touching leaves from the same tree that she did. You are exactly the person they would want to stay in that attic room. Someone who appreciates it so much.
Ahhhhh I went to Amherst College and spent many hours around Dickinson's home. I can't begin to explain the nostalgia and homesickness I got watching this. I love seeing you enjoy something so precious to me.
its so wild seeing marsh in the background this whole video lol it rly is such a beautiful historic area. I spent a week in marsh after doing some dorm cleaning work since I was staying for commencement and i got so much goberry that week. 🤩
I'm so happy for you that you got to have this experience. Your enthusiasm really shined. Sharing this experience with us and allowing us to see this sort of inside look is a real treat. Thank you for sharing it. P.S. Robert Frost is my favorite poet. While I do not agree with your assessment I do fully respect it as Emily Dickinson is very firmly among the greatest poets of all time herself. When picking between the greats you aren't picking which is better, you are picking which has the capability to stir your soul the most.
Ruby, this video was exceptional! The intimate connection you experienced with this place was moving to watch. Thank you for sharing your week with The Emily Dickinson Museum-I believe it was the best video about this iconic location I’ve ever watched-safe travels back home.
Im so happy for you, Ruby! These travelling in Massachutes vlogs have been magical! I now want to go to these places, I hope in the future, if i ever get well enough to be able to travel again (I suffer from severe ME, but I have hope that some day i can get better and live life again) I just love how excited and passionate you are about the things you love. I love Emily Dickinson, I've read all her poems, and I would have felt the same as you walking through their house .. you imagining that she and her family lived their lives right at the location you're at, and to think that Emily would walk around there, daydreaming, getting ideas for poems, writing them down at the place where you sat! Just imaginaning it how I would feel, it just makes me so excited🥰
I love your videos so much Ruby! You are so amazing in everything you do. It's just so beautiful to watch you grow every video. Last year I was one of the worst academicly set people and I could not focus. But your videos completely changed my aspect of studies. Thank you sooo much Ruby.
I’ve lived these Boston/ Amherst blogs. Learned a lot, now read some of her poetry and going to watch that film. Thank you for introducing me to ED. Wonderful to see you having such a good time and following your interests and dreams… you are fortunate but so are we for you sharing 😊🤗
I'm so pleased you had this opportunity to immerse yourself in Dickinson & Amherst. How wonderful that you were able to contribute to promoting literature among young people! I can identify with your joy in the experience. It's one thing to read about an area or to see photos. It's an entirely different experience to actually BE there. My own travels through eastern Canada, Europe & the Mideast have added such a depth of experience which greatly enhances my reading. I can now visualize the places, smell them, remember the tastes, hear the voices...
I just can’t believe how Ruby can travel, work, edit videos for UA-cam and TikTok all at the same time plus fit in reading 📖 Your work ethic is just AMAZING and so INSPIRING! I’ve loved this bookish week.
What a great pilgrimage for an Emily Dickinson devotee. So brave of you to go there on your own.i think I was about 40 before I discovered the joys of solo travel.
Favorite line: "...Robert Frost also lived in Amherst, and he's quite good, too ... but just not as good as Emily Dickinson." Love it! And I have loved watching your pilgrimage to your favorite poet's home. 🧡
Thank you for introducing us to Emily Dickinson. You have inspired such an appreciation for her poetry, ways of living, etc. She was truly a poet who wrote poetry that is so unique and demands to be felt. I love the fact that you wore a black dress lol. Did you know some believe that Emily Dickinson was queer? Don't know how factual this is. Hope you enjoyed your stay there and thank you for allowing us to live vicariously through you, dearest bird. 🌻
Love the video Ruby. I know how you feel when u say its like a pilgrimage to visit your fav poetess. I myself longed to visit Walden someday as Thoreau is one of my favourite poet, author, naturalist.
dear Ruby, I wanted to say that this video gave me a smile on my face from the beginning till the final end. I loves it, you filmed so beautifully and all the information was amazing. I learned so much during this video and I absolutely felt so warm and inspired. Thank you so much for making such magnificent videos!
Wow what a trip!! Its so nice you visited and really appreciated the Amherst atmosphere. You are a very lucky person, blessings to you and your pureness of heart. Thanks for sharing!
Lovely to hear that you've met such warm and welcoming people! I can imagine the social aspect on a trip like this being quite difficult so great that you've managed to talk to new people
It's a shame that person on instagram felt the need to criticise and try to invalidate such a special experience by saying "it's just a house". Whether it's a place of environmental, cultural or religious significance, it's not up to someone else to decide what is or is not special for a person. Everyone has personal connections and a pull towards places for their own reasons. I've loved seeing just a glimpse of your experiences within the Dickinson grounds.
It made me very happy that you spent a week in America with books 🕯️ I am very proud of you, especially for seeing and detailing those historical places in an American museum 👑
This unusually, unseasonably warm weather is not going to last much longer. This weather phenomenon is known here in N. America is an Indian Summer, which usually occurs in the latter half of Autumn after the initial frosts. From what I am seeing, we are expecting a cold front next week (starting Sunday), the weather should be much more seasonal. It would be nice if you could stay for Thanksgiving, that would be a fun experience here in the U.S.
However with Ruby Granger, Amherst is in Massachusetts. A British person visiting the US is an interesting perspective, especially “New England” to see a British person’s response to the turning of English to a further American culture
Omg I know this feeling ! During the summer I worked at my favourite museum for 2 weeks and although I was in the office the whole time, I got to see a lot of "backstage stuff" of it and it was nice :)
It’s palpable how much this is a dream come true for you and it’s just so lovely to watch! ❤ You’ve been inspiring me to read more Dickinson lately and I’m loving it! Also, I’ve been reading this book called “Emily Dickinson’s Gardening Life” which is all about how gardening and botany inspired/impacted her life and poetry. Highly recommended! 😊
Hi Ruby, forgive me if you have already said this but can anyone get an individualized tour like this one? How did you go about getting the museum to grant you access and record everything like this and also is there a form where someone can sign up for it? You said that you are volunteering to make a social media presence for them, but I'd be super interested in how to go about that process. Thanks!
A close relative of mine works in such a museum and they have to approve of the person before proceeding. She said it helps to be likable, trustworthy, reputable, suit the image of the establishment, and be of considerable social media consequence.
Hello Ruby- Thank you for enabling me to watch a snapshot of your life. Really enjoyed this vlog, so educational and informative. You thoroughly deserved your opportunity to visit the home of Emily Dickinson. The words spoken regarding the oak tree and association to Emily was spectacular. Kind regards Phil 😊👍
I liked how you added the words to the screen in some scenes. I liked how you leaned forward and whispering what's going on, it's like sisters trying to be quiet in a room. I'm glad for you, that you are living this wonderful experience.
Fair play to you for travelling alone especially so far away. I often travel alone and I can find myself getting tired as well as time goes on even if you’re enjoying yourself. Love seeing these videos, so lovely you got to go to the Dickinson house when you’re such a big admirer of her work! I’ve not read any Emily Dickinson yet as I’m not a big poetry person but I do have a historical fiction book about her on my TBR.
Thank you so much for this video and for staying a week! A lot of Dickinson readers have been to Amherst but many I suppose, like me, only for a day. And thank you for bringing up Robert Frost. As you know he lived in England, at Dymock in Gloucestershire, and was friends with Edward Thomas who, I suspect you also love. The house Robert Frost lived in in Dymock, called Little Iddens”, is still there and unchanged. A video project in your future?
You are so deserving of this opportunity & they were so lucky to have your help! Dickinson was a favorite poet of my mother & I and we shared a book of her poetry. So sorry for the bullies that have posted in the comments.
I just discovered your fantastic channel! You have inspired me to return to my literary proclivities. Your journey in MA made me think of my favorite from Hawthorne: Young Goodman Brown! Wishing you continued success!
It’s not you, don’t worry.. the word is being used incorrectly! Lucrative means “to make profit” so it really doesn’t make much sense at all in this context 😅
@@victoriabamber2852 maybe she meant that those doing the job of preserving Emily’s house did the decoration in a lucrative manner(?) though it would not make sense given the fact this place must’ve been decorated by Emily or her relatives themselves, and would only make sense if these visits they host are paid for. I’m quite lost 😅
W.B Yeats' house in Galway in ireland is amazing, I live right next to it, it is massive forested grounds and a castle, and a river with waterfall. as well as coole park nearby where he stayed with lady Gregory
Have you seen the series by Amazon plus "Dickinson"? It is so well done and also explores the relationship between Emily and Sue in depth, truly recommend it!
Gracious I feel old that you have never seen a card catalog that’s in use 🤦🏻♀️🥴 it’s so weird to think about that bc I’m only 40 and there were still card catalogs in use when I started college… they were starting to phase them out then but still 😳
Wonderful video Ruby, thank you for sharing Emily’s amazing home with us! I love your black shirt with the white piping on the collar, I was just wondering where you bought it? x
It was kind of the museum to gift you the tours for volunteering! Does anyone know if they offer these opportunities for students as well or do they have the info on the website? It seems like a good way to get some experience if you ever want to teach or work in marketing.
I’m sure my ESL is showing, but what does ”lucratively decorated” mean? Great video as always, and I’m glad you’re having such a wonderful adventure in America! 🥰
I'm a native speaker and have never heard lucratively used in this way. I assumed it was a mistake and Ruby maybe meant that it was richly or lusciously decorated? Hope this helps :)
Amherst is lovely. I attended college there. I am curious, what provoked you, seemingly a caring and intelligent sort, to fly across the pond when the damage caused to the environment by air travel is well known. While your passion for poetry is admirable, poetry, absent an awareness of the adverse impact your actions may cause, is stripped of what makes it so precious: empathy.
Seems like Ruby is having the best time of her life. May God bless her always.
In a crappy museum??!? Sounds Hella LAME to me
Yes, she's glowing in this video and looks so happy :)
Can you stop? Please?

You have inspired such an appreciation for her poetry, ways of living, etc. She was truly a poet who wrote poetry that is so unique and demands to be felt. I love the fact that you wore a black dress lol. Did you know some believe that Emily Dickinson was queer? Don't know how factual this is. Hope you enjoyed your stay there and thank you for allowing us to live vicariously through you, dearest bird. 🌻
Love the video Ruby. I know how you feel when u say its like a pilgrimage to visit your fav poetess. I myself longed to visit Walden someday as Thoreau is one of my favourite poet, author, naturalist.
dear Ruby,
I wanted to say that this video gave me a smile on my face from the beginning till the final end. I loves it, you filmed so beautifully and all the information was amazing. I learned so much during this video and I absolutely felt so warm and inspired. Thank you so much for making such magnificent videos!
You look so content and fulfilled, and I’m just so happy to see this. Also, I visited Amherst this past summer too - absolutely loved this small town!
It made me very happy that you spent a week in America with books 🕯️ I am very proud of you, especially for seeing and detailing those historical places in an American museum 👑
i audibly gasped seeing your upload , always brightens my day !! and a half an hour long video 🥺 🫶
You're probably one of the best youtubers on this platform.
Wonderful work.
So nice that you are enjoying yourself so much. Thanks for the tours
It’s palpable how much this is a dream come true for you and it’s just so lovely to watch! ❤
You’ve been inspiring me to read more Dickinson lately and I’m loving it!
Kind regards Phil
😊👍
That B and B bedroom was so, so you! Lovely video. Thanks, Ruby x
I liked how you added the words to the screen in some scenes. I liked how you leaned forward and whispering what's going on, it's like sisters trying to be quiet in a room. I'm glad for you, that you are living this wonderful experience.
Thank you for this feedback!! And I’m so pleased you liked the video 💗
Loved this vlog and you’ve inspired me to read from Emily now. I can also really picture you living in Amherst!!
You most definitely should!
Hey! I go to college in Amherst! It's cool that we were in the same town at the same time! Glad you had a nice time!!
Your travel vlogs are the best❤ can’t stop watching them ❤
Thanks for sharing such a amazing experience. Would love to see you share other authors worlds that you admire. Such a beautiful place.
I am just so happy to see how happy you are there. :D I love all what you are doing.
Love your videos Ruby. I'm getting into them so much. Bless you. I wish you all the success that you deserve as a creative writer. 😁
Ruby, I love your content so much! It's so peaceful to watch and always such a breath of fresh air
I loved this video so much and was SO sad when it ended. I'm happy you're getting to live your dreams and help a cause you believe in!
Ruby’s channel is always so inspiring ❤ love it ❤
💛💛💛
Absolutely beautiful! I would die on the spot if I were able to stay in that Inn.
You are so deserving of this opportunity & they were so lucky to have your help! Dickinson was a favorite poet of my mother & I and we shared a book of her poetry. So sorry for the bullies that have posted in the comments.
Oohh thank you for sharing! This is so wonderful and dreamy. What an experience to carry in your heart❤️. I am so so happy for you😊
So inspiring. I haven't read Emily Dickinson before, but am off to see what I have of her's on my bookshelf.
I just discovered your fantastic channel! You have inspired me to return to my literary proclivities. Your journey in MA made me think of my favorite from Hawthorne: Young Goodman Brown! Wishing you continued success!
Lucratively decorated? How can a decoration be lucrative? Can someone answer? I am sorry I am not a Native speaker.
It was my mistake! I’m sorry for the confusion - I meant it was an expensive room to decorate xx
I drive past the Emily Dickinson museum at least once a week, but I've never been inside. Such a wild experience to see it in a vlog!
and shoutout to Jones Library, Amherst Books, and Amherst Coffee!
Gracious I feel old that you have never seen a card catalog that’s in use 🤦🏻♀️🥴 it’s so weird to think about that bc I’m only 40 and there were still card catalogs in use when I started college… they were starting to phase them out then but still 😳
I'm thoroughly enjoying this video series - it really feels like being there with you! The B&B is so beautiful too 💖
Ahh I’m so pleased to hear that! And isn’t it wonderful!
This has been so interesting, lovely vlog. What a beautiful place to be.
I would like to see Bronte sisters' nest and Jane Aunten's nest. I would be so happy if you take us to their wonderful places.
I love the energy in this video. Thanks❤
Wonderful video Ruby, thank you for sharing Emily’s amazing home with us! I love your black shirt with the white piping on the collar, I was just wondering where you bought it? x
..
the place is so beautiful,I wish I could visit it someday!!!
love your video. i have been inspired to read and get into books
Glad you enjoyed! Love your videos!
It was kind of the museum to gift you the tours for volunteering! Does anyone know if they offer these opportunities for students as well or do they have the info on the website? It seems like a good way to get some experience if you ever want to teach or work in marketing.
Although I love all of your videos, that was one of the most amazing one! I enjoyed it with my green tea cup 🍵 ❤️
I’m sure my ESL is showing, but what does ”lucratively decorated” mean? Great video as always, and I’m glad you’re having such a wonderful adventure in America! 🥰
I think she used "lucratively" wrong here. She might have meant "luxuriously" decorated.
I'm a native speaker and have never heard lucratively used in this way. I assumed it was a mistake and Ruby maybe meant that it was richly or lusciously decorated? Hope this helps :)
Yes, it was my mistake! I’m sorry for the confusion! I meant it like richly decorated!
I think she meant something like extravagantly decorated - that would be a more correct way of making the point.
Expensively decorated?
Amherst is lovely. I attended college there. I am curious, what provoked you, seemingly a caring and intelligent sort, to fly across the pond when the damage caused to the environment by air travel is well known. While your passion for poetry is admirable, poetry, absent an awareness of the adverse impact your actions may cause, is stripped of what makes it so precious: empathy.
Amazing video, full of magic✨❤
Can I ask with what App do you edit your Tik toks?☺️
10:44 omg ruby's a swiftie 🥰
Alright Ruth Goodman, go off. This was a great video and you are such a great tour guide!
Loved this bookish travel vlog!!!!
Who filmed you there?
I absolutely love this!!! Thank You, Ruby ❤ xo
Hello from France! Thank you for this so amazing video !!!
What a wonderful experience!
Ruby you look so different with your hair up in a bun you looked lovely .
Robert Frost is MY favourite poet, so when you mentioned him that was a cool little fact :)
omg! i go to school at umass amherst! can't believe u were here. hope you had a fabulous time girlie :)
Another beautifully curated video as per usual Ruby. May I ask where you got your lovely coat from ? I’m going to request one for Christmas. 😊
