Glad to see This War of Mine on the list. I feel like it gets overlooked, or maybe I’m looking at the wrong lists. It’s the game that jumpstarted my solo board game obsession... Getting my one remaining person to the end, through a desperate routine to hold on just one more day but knowing she couldn’t make it through too many more, was a deeply moving story experience I still think about as if it really happened.
I grabbed the Deluxe Master Edition of La Granja and it's beautiful. The solo mode is also pretty great, and with the optional modules you can up the complexity to get it firmly in the medium-heavy weight range.
I intended to make a playthrough earlier, but I haven't found the time. It is high on the to-do list. I'm very excited because I love this game. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the list! Love Arkham Horror LCG and Obsession! At 4:57, you list one of the designers for Arkham Horror LCG twice- as Maxine Juniper Newman and Matthew J. Newman, I believe she just goes by Maxine Juniper Newman or MJ Newman now, so you may want to update that.
Thanks for the heads up. I copied that directly from the Board Game Geek page for the game and I was not aware that it was out of date. At this point I cannot alter the video but I will keep that in mind going forward. Thanks!
cool, another recent development you may be aware of is that MJ Newman recently moved from FFG to the folks making Earthborne Rangers. Looks like a good development for Earthborne Rangers, which looks like a Breath of the Wild after one has finished dealing with the Dark Souls of Arkham Horror!@@TotallyTabled
I wasn't aware, but that is great news for Earthborne Rangers. I'm excited for the future of that game. They have a great core gameplay to start with and hopefully it can grow creatively like Arkham Horror. I have high hopes!
Excellent list. I was amazed that so many of my favorites showed up on this video. Nemesis and This War of Mine are both awesome and enjoyable, live or die.
Really good list! I'm enjoying this series a lot! Especially as the weight increases. I think we have some overlap on our top 10's for solo medium-heavy. 10. Darwin's Journey 9. The Great Wall 8. Amritsar: The Golden Temple 7. Zhanguo: The First Empire 6. Terracotta Army 5. Barcelona 4. Ark Nova 3. Obsession 2. Sabika 1. Wayfarers of the South Tigris Lost Ruins of Arnak would have made this list but I generally think of it as more of a medium weight game. Like you said, complexity is so subjective. Looking forward to the heavy list!
Nice list! I still need to get a bunch of these to the table. I've been a bit busy over the last few months. I'm excited to see Zhanguo on the list. I love that game as a multiplayer game. Really want to try the new solo mode. Thanks for checking out the video, Laurence! I really appreciate that.
Great list! I love Obsession. Arkham was my very first board game I have bought. Have a special place in my heart. The tension and the satisfaction can give is out of this world. Same for This War of Mine. Very long game, dramatic and not easy. Pure survival.
Glad to hear some Obsession love. That one is finally starting to get the recognition it deserves. I'm happy you enjoyed the list. Thanks for watching!
Great vid. I haven’t played many solo games. But i enjoyed very much Expeditions (sequel to Scythe), Dune Imperium. Vindication and the last one that I played and blew mi mind if Zhanguo: the first empire, wow, how good it is, I recommend you to try it, if you haven’t yet.
Yeah, that's fair. It is right on the edge. I look at the number of different mechanisms in La Granja and I think about teaching that to someone who hasn't played a lot of games. La Granja is so much more. Without experience in multiuse cards, dice drafting, contract fulfilment, and anytime actions, this would be difficult to learn. I have experience in all those things, so the games seems simpler than it really is. The anytime actions alone make the game so much less structured than most games, which also ups the complexity for me. Thanks for watching!
Arkham Horror is my current favorite solo. It surpassed Spirit Island and Mage Knight. I'm having trouble getting the hang of Spirit Island. But I know once I've put the work into it, I'll find the depth to two handed solo incredible to puzzle out.
As always great tast in games! Nemesis, This War of Mine, Halls of Hegra and een On Mars are my favourite sologames. But just recently I started playing Monster Hunter World solo (2 handed) which turned out to be a lot of fun. I found it really challenging and found progressing the characters very satisfying.
Fantastic list! This War of Mine is also my favorite game! At the Gates of Loyang, and Obsession are my favorite tactical strategy games. I have Marvel Champions on my own list, just as I like its topic more than Arkham Horror.
It is out of print, so difficult to get. Sadly. You can check out my full solo playthrough to make sure it looks like something you might enjoy. It is one of Rosenberg's early designs and still one of my favorites, especially solo. Thanks for watching!
@@TotallyTabled Will definitely give your playthrough a watch this weekend. We're big fans of Rosenberg in this house, so I'm intrigued for sure. Looks very hard to find as you say, so might give it a try in Tabletop Simulator if I come up empty in the second hand market.
I love that Arnak is so high on your list! The leaders expansion is a must. Have you tried the newest expansion that has 2 more leaders? The Mechanic and the Journalist. I need to get La Granja to the table. I picked it up used just before Christmas and haven't played it yet.
I have not tried the new expansion. I really really want to but things have been a bit busy for the last few months. I will definitely get it played soon and probably do a video. I need to try the Journalist, I used to be one! And you have to try La Granja. Such a cool game. Thanks so much for watching the list, Eric!
Yeah, it is high on my to-do list. I've even read the rulebook, just need to table it for some plays. It will happen this year for sure! Original La Granja is so amazing. Thanks!
Most of these are in my top 25 as well! So many great games at this weight -- it really is the goldilocks zone for complexity to intriguing gameplay. Thanks for watching!
Sleeping Gods and Obsession are 2 of my favorite games. I own, but have yet to play, Lost Ruins. I really need to remedy that. I am currently learning how to play Spirit Island. Not sure yet where it will land on my list.
I love La Granja! I have only ever played it solo. Ark Nova is an excellent game and luckily I have a playing partner for it in one of my daughters. I will eventually get to it solo I am sure. Obsession is another great game and I love the theme. I also very much enjoy Lost Ruins of Arnak although it is another one that I have only played multiplayer. I have played At the Gates of Loyang both multiplayer and solo and enjoyed it both ways. The other games on the list I have not yet played. Thanks for the list, Shaggy!
Yes, definitely, so long as you are in the right mood. The next time you are about to watch a really depressing movie, play This War of Mine instead. Also be sure to check out my full solo playthrough to see what it is all about. Not a game for everyone, but it really does something special. Thanks so much for checking out the list!
Halls of Hegra and This War of Mine, are two of my favorites.. my list would include Gloom of Kilforth, i have a soft spot for that, it was the first heavier game I learned and got into..
I agree with you. I'm surprised that another game like This War of Mine has never really been attempted by Awaken Realms or anyone else, as far as I know. Thanks for checking out the list!
I've made a full solo playthrough so you can see exactly how it works. It is similar to the video game but feels very different to play. Thanks so much for watching!
I rank all of these games very high, including Earthborne Rangers. It is right there with the others and depending on the day could easy be on the list. As it gets additional expansions and I get to play it more, I would not be surprised if it moves up the list. Thanks for watching!
Hey Shaggy, medium complexity is my preferred weight, so thanks for the list. ^_^ Inspired by you I bought Loyang lately and it's really satisfying game, I like it but it was so hard to find. From your list I had Nemesis which I absolutely hated. 😅 Arnak is also not good fit for me, I find it really boring. Arkham Horror and Ark Nova are among my favorites, and Dune: Imperium is my newest purchase which I was worried I will not like, because of some similarities it has with Arnak as I heard, but I really like it! Your lists are super helpful to me in finding new games for my collection. ^_^ I discovered Castles of Burgundy thanks to you and I fell in love with this, after every game I wanna just keep going and play and play! :D
I'm so happy to hear that my channel has helped you find a few games you love! I will never have a 100% hit rate, but I hope my playthroughs make it easier to tell if a game is going to work for you and your group. Gaming is so subjective and dependent on so many external factors. I honestly don't trust my opinion on a game until I've played at least 4 times. But also, so many games exist, if one doesn't speak to you right away then there is no harm in trying the next one. You will never run out of good options. Thanks so much for watching the video and supporting the channel!
Hmmm This War of mine being one of my favorites, swapping spot #1 with Frostpunk, I wonder how come it's not on this list? You have played it as I recall.

After a year on my shelf I finally set TWoM up to play today. I haven’t really liked any previous Awaken Realms game but I’m hoping this one is different, people always talk about it like it is
As long as you know what it is and you embrace the experience it is trying to provide -- survival in the face of a cruel, brutal, unfair world -- then it makes for a memorable story. But you must accept the evil d10 and not let it get under your skin. Good luck!
I love Arkham Horror LCG, but the amount of time it takes to set up and sift through all those cards led me to sell it off in the end, a decision I am both relieved and bitter about.
That is completely reasonable. It is a lot. And it is difficult to jump back into after a long time away. Furthermore, being a campaign definitely increases the difficulty of bringing it to the table, for me at least. But when I'm in the mood for this kind of experience, I'm not sure anything other game delivers for me like Arkham Horror LCG. Thanks for watching!

Surprised that you apparently would rate TWOM higher than Frostpunk. The latter, IMO, is vastly superior in every way. In fact, TWOM fell pretty flat with me.
