Vanessa gave us a surprise free performance for a Pride after-party here in Melbourne in 2019. The whole club was singing along to this anthem and it was one of the rare moments I was able to really enjoy myself in a crowd 😅 Surely a night I'll never forget, and she still delivered on those high notes! Thanks for this reaction! Great song, it brings back childhood memories of watching the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Australia in 2000 and seeing Vanessa perform there (on TV, I wasn't there lol).
The song was released in 1999 and had four music videos made for it. The original, which featured Vanessa in various outfits set against a bluescreen with different footage and patterns playing on it. The budget must've been incredibly small because it looked incredibly cheap and bad, which was odd considering her previous (and first) single sold well, and its music video was no way near as bad. After the song's success here which outperformed her previous single, the original music video was then replaced with the second one, the "Millenium Version". It comprised footage of one of her earlier live performances of the song, including the Sydney 2000 NYE celebration which she also performed the song live at. Around this time the song became the unofficial theme song of our new millennium, including many other later events. Fast forward to September 2000, she performs the song at the Closing Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, which shortly afterwards caused it to get released internationally. The "Club Version" video was then made for the UK/Europe market, and another video for the German market. They probably did so because of the previous video's NYE footage and the fact there were only 3 months left of the new millennium. The German version featured Vanessa and many other young locals being invited to a party at a Spanish island villa. It turns out to be the wrong address after the owners unexpectingly come home and fix the upside down house number on the way in, with partygoers immediately scattering away before they're noticed. It sounds alright, but it's one of the most basic and blandest parties/music videos of all time. It's mostly just Vanessa singing to the camera in various different shots on the lawn or by the pool, with everyone else just dancing around her doing not much else (not even going in the damn pool lol). After months of performing and promotion, not to mention her album and other singles from it, I wonder if by this time Vanessa was sick of the song, since in the video she hardly moves around or dances at all compared to the previous ones. Who knows. Vanessa has a huge voice as you can tell, and one of her best performances that showcases this was her singing another song at the same Olympics, only this time during the Opening Ceremony.
