    If there was 1 person I'd ever like to meet and give a big hug to it would be her and I'm primarily into heavy rock and metal. As a drummer and also from everything I've read or watched she seemed like such a rad, down-to-earth woman with IMO the best sounding female voice in history. She had some great chops as a drummer, wish there was more of her playing drums out there because she was awesome on some of the clips I've seen and older concerts behind the kit. So beautiful and real. Makes you wish you knew her personally, it really kills me. She died when I was 5 :(

      +Joseph Schmoe I'd like to go see her kit someday at the Performing Arts Center and pay my respects at the cemetery. If I ever met Richard I'd probably go full-on fanboy dork on him. lol

      +Joseph Schmoe I'm sure he's moved on with life and everything, but if I ever met Tom Burris I just might get a really strong urge to punch the guy right in the face. To be honest.

    Richard doesn’t seem to understand that his sister’s solo album was a major breakthrough for her, emotionally and mentally. She really expressed her maturity with her album, free from the constraints from family. The album was also a testament of her great skill of singing the high notes equally well.

    How dare he (Richard) say that the material on her solo project was "unsuited for Karen"...I've heard every track and "every track" sounds Great!! Poor Karen, He was envious of her success!! She had no support at the time, what a shame and disgrace that her brother couldn't support her and put aside his own ego!!!!

      Well I heard the album too and I thought it was garbage. Richard told her not to do disco and he was right to do so. The songs were not arranged in the best key for her voice. Richard knew her voice better than anybody and that's why so many of her songs were hits. By the way, he was the one who wanted her to be a star and thus had her sing upfront rather than playing the drums. Strange thing to do for somebody who's jealous.

    As much as I loved the Carpenters, and I really was OBSESSED with them, (mainly Karen's voice)I HATED those awful TV "specials". They were embarrassingly BAD - totally cringe-worthy!

      ‘70s “specials” were excruciating. The only ones worse than The Carpenters’ were Cass Elliott’s, which were laden with appalling fat “jokes.”

    If anyone in your family was ill and throwing up, would you know it? Bulimic vomiting is not a non-gagging, silent event. In a home or household, everyone would know. Caring parents would have taken her over and over to a doctor/hospital and not have waited to the extreme of 78 pounds.

    It's sad that it was handled with such insensitivity by A&M and Richard, but I think he was right in that Ramone had her singing too high, and some of those disco songs on her solo album were horrible.

    I do disagree with Richard Carpenter, when he criticises the upper voice range that Karen employed in her solo album. I think that her brighter upper range communicated just as well as the lower range, if not better for this particular material. Also I like the more "raw" vocal sound - her true resonance - not so much of the double tracking. There were many other attractive features in the solo album with great musicians involved.

    I felt sorry for Karen, she married a man who couldn't give her children. Her mother too alas didn't stop the marriage. She would have been better not meeting Tom Burris, it was a sham marriage. Poor Karen needed proper help & guidance but then if she denied she had a problem who could help her. It would have been confusing for everybody from her colleagues to her family. If only her marriage had of worked & she was able to have children it would have given her a reason to live, live for her children. She would have got better sooner & gone on for them. It was a tragedy that nothing seem to go right for her. She was a true victim of stardom yet she was born to be a star & a star she was right till the end.

    When you experience one in a loved one 'close to you' (no pun intended) - that takes them and your family to the edge - and you see parallel symptoms in her friendship group (but not as extreme) you become a little less doctrinaire and a little more nuanced in your approach to causation. At least i did. And I looked into it a fair bit too. But it is of course quite possible that i'm a control freak. I wish !! (never managed to 'control' any of 'em - infact they 'control' me!)

    Mike, I don't know if Randy Schmidt is gay, shouldn't matter anyway he still left so much out of that book of his Little Girl Blue, thanks for your comment. I just hope that the world understands that the book was indeed done with NO RESPECT for the Carpenter name. Seems like the people who wouldn't talk to Randy never have a hard time speaking to me, Only difference is I respect the Carpenter name & always will. Eye's ain'ts a talking!!!!

    Yeh- it all goes pear shaped around 1976 with the TV show. Best forgotton. Sending up ‘Close to You’-not a good idea either. She’s lost some of the lustre, bloom and spontaneity (but not the voice)-u can see it in TV skits. She never ‘owned’ the theme (or vocal register) of the solo album. But u can’t blame family for all Karen’s woes (as people do with anorexia) inspite of ‘control’ issues.Njce NOT to see Anna Raeburn oince again!

    You misunderstand -reason I asked about insider info was because of you being so free with the 'facts' (err -opinions). Its why the feathers are fluffing up and what the source of the'facts' is that puzzling me? There are tons of competing 'facts' re Richard Carpenter surfing the ether and a lot of folk with ever so sharp axes (and teeth/claws) to grind. Im jiust trying to tease out why? And to be honest I aint coming up with any answers -unless he made a helluva lot of enemies (including you).

    Wow -you have got it in for him haven't you. Why? - have you got some connection with him (or priviliged 'insider' information)?
    I mean - there are plenty of haters about. I got personally threatened by some dude on UA-cam a few years ago for trying to defend him - who was goling to hunt me down for it and take me out !!. What is it with this whole vitriolic hate thing? And if the guy was gay and covered up -and 'grew' a Beard so what? Common enouigh. It's their musical legacy that matters.

  • @jezkn
    @jezkn 12 років тому

    Yeah - your right - even given meself an eating disorder - things is that tends to stack it on rather than take it off. But us UA-camrs are the ultimatre control freaks arn't we?.- we can censor anything and anybody, castigate and exterminate and do it all from the self righteous comfort of our sofas while watching the FA cup. No wonder there's so much obesity. There you are - the treatment for anoirexia is UA-cam .....!

  • @jezkn
    @jezkn 12 років тому

    And AGAIN - 'Textbook' - there is NO text book on Anorexia- NOR text book research - and no coclusions - nor experts -everybody whose experienced it or had loved ones who have has their own text book of pain to research. Where you getting this gollops from? You are obsessed and furthermore libelling the bloke to blame him for Karen's death and also very cruel. 'Compelled' - why?- that's the give away - what's your game in all this? NOTHING PERSONAL?- HAVE YOU READ YR OWN COMMENTS ACROSS UA-cam?

    But there you go again -how do you know they're facts? -they're just yr bigotted opinions (or ARE you 'in the know' in some privileged 'eaves dropping' way)..And your definition of 'colourful' reads as insulting to others -like when you talkabout his wife producing children like that (its degrading to them). And ridiculous and whatever his 'identity' problems/family issues you shouldn't be doing it. If your not 'emotionally involved' why are you grinding this particularly vicious axe? Get a grip

    Ok - that's done it for me - I'm finished - drawing a parallel with a bloke who mannicles his own male escort to a bed, tortures him and is put inside for it. As it happens Boy George's family live not far from here and I know his (real) story well and it has no parallels whatsoever (whatever trollops you may have read - again!). You can have the last textbook word/'fact' - I'm retiring from UA-cam's subsidiary - 'persecuting Richard Carpenter division' but this time staying away for good.
