Great video--I love playing and singing root movement and melody (play the melody, sing the root movement AND play the root movement and sing the melody). Can I add one more to the list of internalizing jazz standards--especially from an improvisation standpoint? Be aware of your "jazz practice rubato." Make sure that most of your tune practice is in time. The harmonic rhythm of a tune helps you hear the tune. Don't get caught up in all the details and color tones every time you practice--playing tunes in time will make EVERYTHING easier when you play on the bandstand. If the tune has a particularly difficult section--slow the ENTIRE tune down when you practice it. Remember, musical rubato has a pulse--it is not totally a tempo. Damn, I wish someone told me that advice SOONER!
This was great! As someone who is Jazz curious, I've always struggled internalizing songs. This seems like a good place to start, and also this approach seems like it would work for non-jazz material as well.
Fantastic lesson!!
Thank you for these tips, I suscribe :)
