I was there (along with my now late mother) to see the opening night of UK Gold which was a brilliant channel back then with it's mix of both classic sitcoms and drama's from both the BBC and ITV. I remember vividly, even to this day there animated start up sequence with there golden retriever (and there was quite a few different variations that they used of the animated dog). I remember watching there first programme the classic sitcom "Just Good Friends". If i recall, i actually watched the whole nights first broadcast until it closed down for the night (and it did) It started up the following day at 7am. One of there popular programmes back then in the 1990s and it certainly was with me as i am a fan, was classic Doctor Who in broadcast order which the channel regularly showed every weekday night beginning with the first episode of John Pertwee's Third Doctor serial "Spearhead From Space" and ending with episode 4 of the 7th Doctor Who serial "Survival" (and the channel always repeated when they finally got to Episode 4 of "Survival" and began once again from "Spearhead From Space". As i mentioned earlier not only was classic Doctor Who shown by UK Gold every-week day night Monday-Friday but there was even there omnibus edition of that weeks serial on Sunday called by the channel simply, what else but "Doctor Who Omnibus" broadcasting from 9am-12pm every single Sunday if it was a 4 parter or 8:35am-12pm if it was a 6 part serial (with there advert breaks of course) For year the channel showed Doctor Who this way as mentioned above in order up and till early 2000s and then it finally left channel. In my opinion UK Gold throughout the 1990s in general was a brilliant channel with all there programming not like it is today, "GOLD" which is crap in my opinion i very rarely the channel now. I think the worst thing the broadcaster UKTV did was to rebrand the channel in 2008 (a bad move by them in my opinion) and since then it has never been the same, I know nothing ever stays the same (no channel ever has) but they could of gone about things differently back then. Unbelievable it was 30 years ago this week, a new golden oldies channel that launched, which is currently now Gold. First programme that was broadcast, Just Good Friends starring Paul Nicholas and Jan Francis.
