I think you're missing the premise of the conference here. Renewables or fossil fuels: we're not going to get there either way - as long as we don't address the economic growth treadmill and the values that underpin it.

A person who is ideologically political can still be involved in the advancement of science, which is why science can't totally be separated from politics.

Also, people may want science separated from their politics because of the circumstances of their politics and science in the country.

this is like monty python sketch. Debate? where is the voice from the other side? Like somebody that would argue that if you dont produce anything you will be hungry. Not this participants of beyond growth conference. They all earn more than 100 000 euros per year.

Think of what people do in their free time or without any monetary return: we cook, we make music, we write, we make furniture, repair and maintain stuff, knit clothes, organise movements and share skills... If we liberate ourselves from the idea that people won't do anything if they get a basic income, job guarantee or universal basic services, we realise how much freedom the current work system is taking from us. We need to get up, work our asses off until we barely have time left for our family, just to create value for a rich person somewhere that wants to get even richer... That's not freedom to me.

Naïve and precious nonsense. Did any of them explain what an economy with zero or near-zero growth - much less "degrowth" - would look like? How would it work? I've always been befuddled by the assumption of traditional economics that growth is always necessary. I've never found a decent and honest explanation of why growth is necessary, or how we could do without it. After viewing this video, I feel that I still haven't heard one. Jingoistic nonsense.
