There should be a metal band called Gatekeeper, and all their lyrics are just cringy things stereotypical metalheads say.
that would be hilarious 😂
Their debut would read like this: Gatekeeper- "We're the only TRUE metalheads *cough cough*"
That's, that's actually a very cool idea, plus points if it's one of those bands that doesn't take themselves too seriously (which ironically makes many bands better)
Brilliant!
It's probably already been taken! Gatekeepers, with an S and horrible illegible font.
“I’m 44 and I feel like I’m a little too young for Megadeth.”
Every now and then you knock one out of the park lol
"Knocking one out of the park" sounds like what a PDF file would do 😂😂😂
46 and I felt that one.
“True” metalheads are insufferable. I’ve met so many cool older guys at deathcore shows that appreciate the genre moving forward. My dad was born 1963 and he was an early metalhead, and he told me when I was playing metalcore for him back in 2009 that he’d be into it if was my age too. Was it his taste at the time, not really; did he appreciate metal was alive and well, absolutely. His favorite I played for him was Killswitch Engage, which is always a happy memory because Killswitch is absolutely fantastic and still a favorite of mine. You can just like a genre of music and not be an elitist. I’m a kpop fan but I still go back to metal all the time, I like country music and rap and pop and punk, metal’s my favorite genre but I like to expand. The dorks arguing about Metallica vs Megadeth in 2023 are bigger posers than anyone who likes a few Linkin Park and Slipknot songs. Metal has a real exclusivity problem, and I hate it.
True metalheads are just insufferable tight wads who will only allow you in their little click if you listen to some boring djent song or some early thrash or death metal or prog metal music from like 40 years ago. All in all not worth it.
agree. I'm a metalhead but I am also almost 40. I left the long hair and all that stuff off a long time ago. these days, I look like Mr. Businessman while still enjoying anything from August Burns Red to DRAIN to The Acacia Strain to fucking Periphery. 😎🤘
Got my parents into Korn lol. & Fieldy said when parents start to like Korn they become not cool...
The real litmus test for me is when I meet someone who listens to metal, I ask them if they like any other genres. I find most of the metal elitists tend to be completely insular in their tastes. And yeah, you're right, dudes arguing about dumb metal shit from 1980 are the biggest poseurs. They try so hard to hold onto their identity as a "metal head" when in reality nobody gives a shit. More people now than ever have diverse music tastes. Just sticking to one genre is goofy AF.
I'm 37 and grew up on Metallica and Korn. I love slam and deathcore. Music always gets better with fresh ideas. I can't stand the old guys that are stuck on Megadeth and cannibal corpse. They're great but good God that was 40 years ago.
Metalheads hate djenting but absolutely love Slayer and the breakdown in Raining Blood.
What a clowns they are. Lol. Totally agree with you. Bands like Slayer, Sepultura and Pantera basically invented modern breakdowns
I like both but it takes a thick skull to not see they are two very different genres of metal lmao.
@@SlapAPear its funny because these people will breakdown all the different sub genres but cant seem to wrap their heads around more of them popping up. Its like they are stuck with whatever sub genres they created in their head in the year 1999
@@restoringforce9893 Then Korn ran w the idea lol
Arguing about Metallica vs Megadeth in 2023 is like if you were still arguing about Nintendo vs Sega. The battle happened decades ago and it no longer matters. Some may find enjoyment in looking back, but picking a side years after it happened is weird af.
It's so weird.
Bunch of 20 and 30 somethings acting like the mom in Bowling For Soup's/Sr-71's "1985". Get over yourselves and focus on something fucking relevant for once.
Yep
Even the bands in question have buried the hatchet!
You're on a war memorial, not a battlefield!
I settled that "debate" back when I was 15 (Metallica all the way!).
Congratulations on the birth of your son Finn. If you don't get him an MGK onesie I'm gonna be pissed 😂
That only listens to the old stuff thing reminds me of the time I accidentally found my favorite album ever (at the time). This is embarrassing. Roughly 20 years ago I had just eaten at chipotle and en route to my car there was a cd on the ground face down. Was in great shape. No text on the front, only graphics. No idea who or what it was. Grabbed it, popped it in my cd player, and was in audio ecstasy from beginning to end. Was 100% how I imagined every band I've been in sounding, and it even rekindled my interest in joining bands.
It was Avenged Sevenfold's debut.
finn wears shirts from bands so underground that i literally thought it was a generic h&m shirt
The -core thing is the same with nu metal. I remember a video with a bunch of comments (well, replies to comments) saying that not only was nu metal not “real metal”, but SPECIFICALLY said listed Korn and Slipknot as “not real metal”… like… have you heard a song from either?
I feel like Slipknot always says “This new album is going to be Iowa levels of heavy!”. And it always never is 😂
I agree, because they would have to be Iowa levels toxicated for that, but they have zero tolerance for drugs nowadays. :D
In Japan a lot of metal musician are classical trained musican. Usually they already have mastered the piano or other instruments before they find metal in high school and college and decides to learn the guitar. One of the reason why you find a lot of interesting metal in Japan.
Finn doesn’t like Japanese metal. He thinks they’re either derivative of western bands or overly zany and cringe and that western metalheads only like them cause they have Japan fetishes
Japan is a whole other beast in and of itself with their metal. There is so much brilliance going on there!
@@sorenvanaheim776 Yes, I agree, Japanese metal has a fanbase because there’s a lot of creativity and catchiness and it’s got its own great vibe. Nothing to do with any Japan fetishes, Finn just doesn’t get it,
Anime intros!
@@Hikaeme-od3zq yes thats true, anime and video game soundtracks introduced alot of people outside Japan to Jrock and Jmetal.
Guess I'm not a true metal head, I can take a joke. Thanks for all the great content.
No laughing in metal!
@@HeritageWealthPlanning lol all brutal all the time!!🤘
Like Finn said, we should all aspire to be posers
@@J_3564 I'm definitely a poser, no tattoos and I'm wearing pink.
@@aliasfakename2267 Same! I have no tattoos, dress like a guy from kpop group, listen to Avenged Sevenfold, Alter Bridge, even i listen to blink-182 and Blackpink, but i'm also listen to Metallica and Pantera. I'm definitely a poser 😁
“Real bands should never use backing tracks live” should’ve been on the list. Theres a local musician I know who said the other day that bands shouldn’t record if they cant play it live without tracks.
A few years ago when I was in a band we were at a rented rehearsal space with several rooms; we did industrial-adjacent and used sequences and stuff. A "true" saw the computer in the room, scoffed and said something along the lines of "me spending years in a conservatory but them kids with their computers think they are musicians". Not our fault he couldn't grasp that using software to augment the music (we still used "real instruments") was a valid path.
One of my close friends is the type of person who has dedicated his life to classical music, and it's so funny how differently he talks about it from the guys who say they like classical music to sound smart. He's constantly sending me these weird pieces by composers I've never heard of while the classical music culture war guys basically only ever refer to Mozart and Beethoven pieces that appear in popular culture.
i'm also a "early stuff" guy, but i just find that often that's when a band puts out its most interesting material
I feel like every band's second album is always the best one.
I think it's funny how he says new metal is all fake and programmed but doesn't see why people prefer the old stuff. Old doesn't equal bad lol
Funny thing is it was my mum who got me into metal when I was a kid so the comment about women made me laugh and alot of my friends still never believed it to this day 😂😂
Also, congratulations on the new edition to your family Fin. Being a Dad is an amazing gift.
Facts on the touring thing. There have been numerous bands over the past few years that have absolutely blown up on social median and youtube and built a massive following there so when they decided to do a few shows they immediately sell out theaters. They never had to suffer through the phase where you make no money while touring. They build the following so that shows sell out immediately. Why would you do it any other way? To satisfy metal head with a megadeth battle vest on? F that noise.
And yeah i agree that the sophomore slump is real. Probably because the band had years worth of material that they'd been sitting on individually or as a group that they pour into the first album, and then they get signed and have to turn around another album in a year and a half or w/e so the quality is definitely going to drop for a lot of bands.
Very true
unironically need more bands to sound like breaking benjamin in my life
2:20 “sample size 6 people” 🤣
That’s definitely statistically relevant!
Ive always thought that any good artists’ debut is usually their best because its the material they’ve written years ago and have been honing, polishing and perfecting for the longest time. Its the same reason a comedians’ earliest special;s) are usually their strongest and get weaker over time. When you’re pressured to pump out new material every 12-24 months it just wont be as strong.
Besides, the vast majority of artists aren’t an infinite well of artistic expression, even the best artists just kind of run out of shit to say after awhile🤷♂️.
I ran out years ago tbh
"IF YOU CAN SELLOUT DO IT!!" FACTS FINN!!! Metal is the only music genre that hates success!
yeah, the first thing I think of when I listen to The Blue Danube Waltz is Cannibal Corpse or Meshuggah. I guess I'm also a chick now because I first heard metal through my dad and learned about a lot of other bands through my male friends in high school. who would've guessed transitioning would be so easy! it's not like most people learn about stuff through their friends and parents.
Also congrats on the new Wee One :)
Metal fans just call everything that doesn’t sound metal to them screamo
The real power move is referring to Megadeth or Slayer as screamo
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA sodom and exodus are my favorite screamo bands.
Or Indi -____-
I really have the classical music thing.
They keep calling Vivaldi the original metalhead and I pull my head out.
Two completely different highs for me when I listen to Vivaldi and metal.
10:20 that's kinda ironic - when I was a young, edgy black metal basement dweller a common sentiment among bm fans was that you can't tour or play concerts at all if you want to be a true black metal band/artist/project/whatever. I always thought this is extremely stupid, probably even more than the opposite view.
I've been getting into fights for saying it since Jr high. Finn said it I feel vindicated.
"Metal is the fakest genre of music"
It was DISCO in the 70's lol
Modern Country: "Finally, a worthy opponent! Our battle will be legendary!"
I honestly think that most people who don't like metal haven't been turned off by the music as they've been turned off by the fanbase. I've been listening to metal for 25 years and still don't call myself a "metalhead" because I've met so many awful metal fans.
Another great one Finn! Thank you
The most cringe saying is when someone refers to themselves as a metalhead
Yeah i totally agree
The phrase "butt rock" needs to be added to this list.
a lot of genres of music are like this. I don't even get into musical discourse. I just like what I like.
"deep philisophical lyrics"
*BANANA BANANA BANANA BANANA TERRACOTTA BANANA TERRACOTTA TERRACOTTA PIE*
The reason so many 1st albums are the best one is because they are the songs the bands have worked on the longest.
I actually disagree with your opinion of production quality. I get that raw, low-fi production can make an album sound grittier/rougher. But, on the other hand, more professional production can give it much more impact. Case in point: “Sons Of Northern Darkness” by Immortal. Which IMO benefits greatly from its excellent production.
One example of this for me is Pantera. Whenever I listen to my two favorites from them, Primal Concrete Sledge and Domination, I have to turn the stereo up several notches for it to hit as hard (from a volume standpoint) as anything off of Far Beyond Driven and later.
He left out the one threating violence against those who dislike metal I remember Sam Bean from werewolves responding to a kid who said that on a forum "so you'd go to jail for entertainment?"
Bradley didn't just give the Top 10, he BECAME the Top 10 😂
I like they jumped to her father, or brother getting her into metal first. Acknowledging that a metalhead having a girlfriend is the least likely option.
Just goes to show "real metal" is a glorified nerdy sausage fest
when people say a genre of music is 'dead', all that means is that the posers have moved on to the next new thing
Bruh I'm dead "Volbeat is Chercore" and now I can't help but imagine Jack from _Will & Grace_ arguing with Sleep Token about how his lyrics are sung 💀💀💀
you just called out the entire genre of deathcore
Got lost in the layers of sarcasm on this one
As a metal head myself I agree with all of these lol. Please make a part 2
Of course finn reacted to this 😂
I got into Cattle Decapitation when I was 14 through a female acquaintance who introduced them to my beloved ears and I fell in love ever since.
are we supposed to know your current age to know how long ago this was?
@@coryleblanc I forgot to add that I'm 24 and that was ten years ago
I think the point was that a female introduced him, a male, into metal
I'm pretty sure she made you listen to Forced Gender Reassignment.
@@neilkenneth859 Nope... Clandestine Ways and Your Disposal.
I still feel like metal and classical semi close in some instances. I’m not a classically trained musician, but like some Mozart/ Beethoven sounds like some power metal/ tech metal. is just observation. Also, bands older work is almost always better. Especially when they drastically change their sound it’s like a new band entirely- and if I really liked them before it’s hard for me to get passed what I knew and loved them for previously. . It’s like when coke changed their formula in the 80’s. ain’t nobody want that new flavor *sales plummet*
i came up through the hardcore scene so i've never heard alot of these arguments, we seemed to be able to accept more in that scene i.m.o.
Lol pretty perfect I'd like to see a second video on this.. you should make one
I'm also the only listen to early stuff guy lol but only bc I like you said enjoy the rawness of early works and the charming sometimes sloppiness
What does MBA stand for in the Spotify playlist name?
If someone asked me to name 3 songs because I was wearing a particular bands t-shirt I would tell them to piss off on principle. Who the hell do people think they are to imply that you're not metal enough to wear something?
Watching Michael chew that makes my molars feel electricity running through them, like chewing tin foil lol
I don't know what could be worse than saying "cringe".
It’s interesting the point you made about metal being big today. Now I am not a metal fan. But I am a guitarist and I review a lot of guitar gear. And it is interesting the multi-effect units and plug-ins that are released seem to really be focused on a metal audience. Which does make sense because look at all the guitar UA-cam channels, you have John Mayer fans which make up 30% of them and the other 70% are metal players. I hate it that for me I have to find things out of the norm for today because I don’t play metal. But it makes sense they gear everything for metal players now.
Yep that’s exactly right! Metal guitarists are a huge chunk of the market
I couldn't imagine caring what others thought of the music I listen to.
12:16 from what I can tell the only ways to really make money on tour is to have a guarantee that allows you to ensure you’re making more than it cost to travel and pay your crew. (Good luck getting that guarantee unless you’re bigger). And by owning your own tour bus to help reduce the cost of renting buses, assuming they are even available to rent like a lot of bands are dealing with currently.
Congrats on the birth of your child brotha!
True metal heads have at least one surgery that has left either screws or a plate of metal on their scull.
Ahh Elitists... Guitar ones r insufferable too... "Korn sucks cuz they ain't technical!😭" Lol
So glad someone finally said it.
man i hate the 'metal is just modern classical music'
no, it's fucking not lmao. there are some bands and artists like malmsteen that adopt a few of the surface level aesthetics of baroque music, but that's about it. And even classical music moved on from that 300 years ago.
Exactly
Actually just watched the Joe Rogan episode with Dave and he says he wrote 4 or 5 songs on each of the first two Metallica albums and one on their third and he did in fact receive proper royalties for writing those songs except the one on the third album.
Just before he died in a dangerous thought experiment, my Dad ran a groundbreaking self-study that confirmed he liked metal more than all the other posers out there.
Nothing repulses me more than 55-70 year old rock and metal musicians still playing live and still trying to set like they aren't senior citizens
“Deep philosophical lyrics”
*Brojob has entered the chat* 🤣🤣
They do have a album about mental health
I always felt left out from being a normie- i now realize it was my strength
I've come to find most people of any fanbase are obnoxious...people who hate everything are obnoxious...i sold 75% of the band T's i own last year. I like the stuff i like, because i like it...that's what i tell ppl...but for the most part i don't wanna strike up a conversation anyone...ESPECIALLY about music...except you, Finn lol...i know you're the world's 2nd biggest ptpm fan!
I went to a cannibal corpse show a few months back and I was pleasantly surprised at how many women were there. They all loved when corpse grinder shouted them out before they played fucked with a knife
He had me at Ipso facto...😂
If by smarter, they mean a disproportionate number of nerdy introverts and/or high functioning autism, I'm inclined to agree tbh.
I am not mad when a band is not turing but I'd love to see them live
The “you have to tour” argument is mentioned by gatekeepers in every single thread about a UA-cam guitarist on The Gear Page.
lol i LOVE metal and I love how ridiculous it is. More of this!
I think most bands are just at their most creative when they make their first album and get more and more generic.
When is the top 10 cringe things hardcore punk fans say video coming?
Those things listed in the video
Are fucking HILARIOUS.
B Hall is the man 🤘🏼
I see something afar off 👀
The punishers cometh like a cloud of locusts 🪳🪳🪳
I love this video because it makes me think of something I really hate: Gatekeeping in metal promotion. Whenever I see a band described as "true metal", I want to throw something at the wall. Stop being a douchebag about describing metal!
The "Everything after their first demo sucked" guy reeks. That goes for any rock genre not just metal.
"Their old stuff is better" is the only thing he's wrong on. I lost count of the bands with 1 or 2 great albums that totally drop off afterwards. It's not necessarily their fault, I mean you spend all this time writing your breakout album that gets you attention, but it's not easy to do that when you've got a record deal and have to produce on a schedule on top of touring. Of course there are exceptions but they don't disprove the rule
Maybe 80s metal could have the excuse that it's very classical like, but even then thats a very big stretch
I long to be filled with the fires of rage for anything, the way Finn is filled with the fires of rage for a few handfuls of reddit incels.
When people ask me what kind of music I listen to I usually just tell them garbage😂 The trashier the better!
The whole notion that women are only into metal because of men is ridiculous. The first popular music that I heard was Supertramp, then Abba, and then Kiss (the Dynasty album). I hate Kiss but in the mid-80s got into NWOBM and a few years later, industrial metal. I'm female and a bit older than Finn. Some people need to get out more lol
Top 1 cringe things to say: I listen to metal.
Eh, the study that gets referenced to a lot was a study looking to prove metal makes you dumb and violent.
It’s a good one to pull out on people who say stuff like you’re a bad person for listening to metal, metal is super violent and is bad for you, etc. Those people still exist and tend to be real pieces of work.
Heaviest/most progressive point reminds me of when dez said that he's "using his voice more on the new coal chamber album", and we got chop the monkey......
I love Metal that’s it I don’t think I’m better or cooler than anyone else that’s just my taste in fact I go to a lot of shows and it’s mostly old people and the young people are slightly dorky these days the energy that was around shows when I was younger in the 80’s and 90’s but I still love it
Unanswered isn't metal!? Ppfffffff 🤭😅😂🤣
The majority of metal fans are chill, accepting, nice people. But there's this loud, annoying minority of gatekeepers, homophobes, Nazis, and elitist snobs that ruin it for the rest of us.
I prefer fake hip hop over real hip hop. And by fake hip hop I mostly mean dark wave bands like cabaret Voltaire and nitzer ebb
One of my favourites is when you’re at a show and someone asks you, “Who are you here to see?”
The bands playing you fucking idiot.
I have to admit i kinda hate how good looking the guy from Polyphia is 😂
I listen to fake metal but I call it fake rock because I'm snobbier about classic rock vs alternative rock
You should to a '10 Cringe Things I've Said'
