- The great English playwright Shakespeare famously wrote, “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” It is true that life is like a theatre play, isn’t it? And in fact, there are plenty of expressions we use that are related to theatre language but mean other things. In this lesson, I will introduce you to a variety of idioms and metaphors from the world of theatre which are used in everyday life. You will learn the meaning of “to upstage someone”, “break a leg”, “hard act to follow”, “to make a song and dance”, “to be in the limelight”, and more. These expressions are commonly used by native English speakers. Let’s get the show on the road!

Nowadays is very hard to find such an intelligent person as Gill. Thank you for all your efforts which you give us(especially for me)!
Efforts being the operative word here. Something I have noticed too, the effort she makes to make us undesrtand things is very admirable. As someone who has never been to a theatre - this is very helpful.
2 types of teachers that make me want to learn
1. Funny teachers
2. This kind of teachers, like Gill!
Metal Otaku me too , and which funny teachers you know?
She is one in a million, i love the way she teaches., funny and serious at the same time :)
Madame Gill is the best teacher ever I see:funny and serious at the same time.
@@tamkopubgm1158 Ronnie from "learn English with Ronnie", Aly from "Learn English with Papa Teach Me", and Tim from "BBC Learning English". They are awesome, they always make me laugh my head off. I strongly recommend those teachers.
MsJill is the best ever one Iever met!lwish all the best in her activity.
I love her. Her accent, her voice, her light English sense of humour I detect here and there. In some odd way, Gill doesn't even seem all that foreign to me, although her accent at first did: I didn't know what or where it was from. I guess I always had the idea English people spoke what I had learnt at school which was RP. I used to have an English penfriend back in the days when people sent letters to each other. I also had American penpals. They were so simple, straightforward and boring, whereas with my English West Midlands penpal I could actually have fun and give and take little tender "insults". A bit of irony or sarcasm here and there, things like that. She taught me a great deal and I am for ever grateful. (I'm Finnish, a Finn from Finland.)
She is from the east Midlands but now lives in London so her accent has a slight twang.
samonen: I couldn't agree more with your excellent commentary. Greetings from the underground.
J' adore ! With you, I understand everything. I'm 58 years old, it's never too late to learn. With you it's so easy. Thank you.

Dear Gill-sensei, thank you for your theatre idiom lesson. It is always with great joy that I come to your youtube videos. I appreciate the quotation from Shakespeare. I sometimes wonder why I love pessimistic lines like this one so much. Come to think of it, many songs, lyrics, poems, novels etc. are both pessimistic and attractive. " Life is but a walking shadow, a poor player , that struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and is heard no more."
That is a very good English teacher
She's like my grandma. I feel warm and happy.

Hi MS GILL, I LOVE YOUR LESSON VERY MUCH, AND ALSO LIKE YOU. Can you correct me the following I wrote with the phrase you taught me? I don’t know Y I am the guy who always being waiting in the wings in the company. I am very angry about that, so sometimes I made an exit when leaving office and to upstage my boss, I always beat him in tennis make him hard to follow me, I even want him to break a leg when playing with me, I do not wish him luck for break him a leg! Everything went bad, I was told by a good friend, he said the show must go on, if you want changes you should change first. I prepare a lot and got the show on the road. I worked hard and did my best to help others and finally stole the show and to be in the limelight. My boss was very happy about what I have done and praised me. I told him not to marking a song and dance about it, I merely did what I have to do. Quickly I got a promotion and my big boss said that’s wouldn’t be the curtain on me.
Hi - you've used a lot of theatre idioms there, and told an interesting story - well done :-)

Great teacher
Good Evening Ma'am
The first teacher in my life I can understant speaking along!I was afraid -it never would happen with me!
You are the best Gill !!
( what I understood)
Baby: everyone happy with your making entrance and you are the loved one, then the schoolboy: learns life and learns to love, then become lover, who fall in love his village, country, family, friends (maybe a special one as well), now he is a soldier and he can fight for his loved ones and for loved country, but the knowledge and experience of life which he lived , makes him judge the life, people, mistakes, mis understandings,... sometimes life is hard (maybe harder than you imagine) makes him pantoloon, as teenagers think it (they think that way because they have little knowledge and experience about life), actually old ages are very fruitful as they have the knowledge of life which experienced one by one in life laboratory.
Teacher who make things lot easier to catch up & store in head instantly are great like Maam Gill.Namshkar Maam Gill.
I wish good days for you ever teacher congratulation for your videos them very important information

TEACHER What's the most expensive thing in the world?
STUDENT The most expensive thing in the world is the missed opportunity
If we're waiting in the wings and when the moment is there and we don't grab it we gonna miss the boat
Thank you very much!!!
Funny quotation, I like it, thank you so much for sharing that Jaques thoughts, god bless you, mrs Gill🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺
You're an angel, Gill!
Hello, Ms.Gill, as usual, you aré very kind, and respectful person, I thank you as usual, really, thank you for taking the time of making and preparing this class. I have a question, hopefully not disrespect to you and your team work, I have been following you "you tube" classes for quite some time, but not all time.why is that now there are so manny promotional segments in you recording, is ok. Some but here in Japan, are too many. Thank you.
Hi, and thank you for your kind words. The promotional segments are put in by UA-cam -- I have no control over that. I hope it's not too distracting :-)
Oh,Thank you very much, for your kind reply, I understood the reason of the promotional segments,is not in you decision, to choose which of them or which not, thank you again. By the way you explanation of the cokny , I think west end, accent and words from P.R lenguaje was very interesting. Ta. Sorry can you do something very easy an understandable about “rap,”about cars or motorcycles.
I'm definitely binge - watching Gill
Thank you. ( Henny Andries, Jakarta-Indonesia).
Wonderful creature
How much emotion
确实是非常好的老师!!!
Great, as usual. I love you, Gill.
Thanks for the good work
Thank you!
Thank you you very much, I enjoy watching this interesting lesson😍👍🏻
Gill, it's very usual to say/hear "Now, you broke my legs", I don't know if it came from Theater or not, but it has a different meaning which you did not explore, why? Notice, this expression doesn't exist originally in Portuguese, for example, so it's worth to mention, right?
Hi -- I haven't heard the expression you quote -- I only know "Break a leg" from the theatre :-)
@@engvidGill Sorry, my mistake, probably I am mixing with " to break someone up". 👌👌👍👍
Thanks ❤🌹🌹
You’re such an amazing teacher 🥰🥰👌👍
Thank you for your lessons 😘😘😘
Thank you ,madame. It really helps a lot indeed.
Thanks teacher
