Nişantaşı is a luxurious residential area known for its fashion boutiques selling products of international and famous local brands. The art nouveau-style buildings have cool restaurants serving Turkish and international cuisine. While the wide sidewalks of Abdi Ipekçi Street are Decked with cafes, there are neighborhood bakeries and markets in the side streets. There are hiking trails in the shady Maçka Park.

My late father had two friends from med school (also long since deceased). Dr Özhan Kaleoğlu who lived on Valikonağı opposite the Nişantaş Anadolu Lisesi and Dr Sona Saraçiyan who lived on Hacı Emin Efendi just off Valikonağı. What wonderful people they were and how much I miss them. Valikonağı was so much quieter back then too!
