Never realized there were so many movies about the Alpine front in WW1. I'm gonna have to check those out
I think fighting there must have been more brutal then any other becaus the biting cold and mountain cliffs

its true for most of the greatest battle in history you have to respect at least the men involved for the shear hell they fought threw be it the yatzis and soviets alike who lived threw stalingrad to the ottomans and australian at gallipoli to the confedracy and union at gettysburg.
Most of the soildiers just walked outside their door. Both armies required mountain guides and people living in the mountains who knew how to get around.

My ancestors fought in those mountains. Seeing what they've had to go through gives you goosebumps.

When people discuss "sad" sabaton songs, few comes in mind. (The Hammer has fallen, A price of a mile and A lifetime of war) But I'm willing to argue that soldier of heaven, from a lyrical standpoint is just as tragic

I remember the first time my mother told me about my great-grandfather, a 17 year old Field Medic who fought the Austrians in the Alps during the Great War. She said it broke him mentally and physically, but he was one of the few who made it through.

My unit had its birthplace right there and then as the "Alpenkorps" - a german contingent supporting the austrians...
We still wear the "Edelweiß"-insignia on the grey world war one era caps of our parade uniform with good reason and imense pride... what our ancestors did and achieved was insane

So many of those young men are still up there where they fell still. Trench Warfare in a frozen hellhole, it's one of my worst nightmares. Verdun sounds more appealing than the campaign in the Alps.

My great grandfather was a German immigrant. His son, my grandfather,, fought Germans in WWI. My grandfather's son...my father, fought Germans in WWII. I grew up speaking English...and German.
My father was awarded the DSC, Silver Star, the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster...twice. I guess that means he was a good soldier. A retired general presented my mother the flag from his coffin..." Not as famous as the soldiers who fought in the trenches and mud, but massive respect to these men, they have balls and guts to fought in those mountains where the cold or avalanche will killed them instead of the enemy😢😢
It’s just sad to think about the men that are still there, and to think about how these battles are unknown, within the Alps holds beauty and horror. My heart goes out to those who remain where they fell one hundred years ago 🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡

One of the most tragic element of this all, is that barely 100 years later, almost no one in Europe knows about the Alpine wars or even remembers about any of this. They have been erased from the collective memory.
Don't sacrifice yourself for "the nation", it will discard you the moment it doesn't need you anymore.
Just like those Chechen war Russian fighters left begging for scraps on the road side, while the people who didn't have to pay the ultimate sacrifice enjoyed their lives partying and dancing on western pop music.

I have it difficult. I'm both part Italian and part Austria-Hungary (my Austrian-Hungarian part left was from a today non existent town in an unknown part of the austro-hungarian empire, and never sopke anything but English, so i don't know the specific origin)

But whichever side I choose I realized I would be in a hard place. My Italian family was Alpine, and an alpini soldier isn't sweet. Same with the Austrians, that also came form an alpine zone
Embrace both heritages. Honor the dead on both sides by remembering. War does not solve anything. The soldiers are ultimatly those who fight and die for a cause, for which they might or might not wanted to fight for. You can look into both sides of your family tree and get to know their history and maybe discover something interesting. Who knows?

Probably the most insane battlefield in history, over the clouds sometimes in thunderstorms, frezing cold, insane logistics and two incompetent militarys.
Not saying the Italiens and the austria-hungariens where bad but ther chefs of staff cared more about evening dinner and ”honor” then the men fighting in hellish conditions.

New album
Unfortunately due to global warming. If researchers go back up on those mountains im sure they will find nothing but horror. Bodies decomposing and skeletons with parts of flesh still on whats left of their bodies after such years of being trapped under all that ice and snow.
Let's just hope they can be identified and their families can finally grieve and find solace that they have been found. Maybe some can be transported to their final resting place
It will soon move from burial and return to families to just WW1 archeology. This is from over a hundred years ago, nobody left to remember them or grieve.

Why .. it’s what an Alpino does. One of our songs say in Italian … the Bersiglieri have 100 feathers on their hat , an Alpino only has 1 … because only an Alpino can carry it! Before the “reforms” during the Cold War you were not made an Alpino .. you are born one .. in your “Val” (Valley) … like your father/grandfather/greatgrandfather .. if you are Piedmontese you would have served in the Taurinese Brigade in the “Val” from which you came … e.g. Aosta. Oh and you never are formally discharged … you just go on indefinite leave … till the day you die. In the Alps no one ever gets past the Alpini … unless the Alpini are dead!
