My Dad was at RAF Wickenby for a while in 1943 as a Navigator. I took him back there a year before he died in 2000, and we saw the memorial at the entrance to the 1,085 (I think the total was) men that took off from there, never to return. I'm glad the place is still alive as civilian airfield today.
I watched the video and all I could think about was my Father rushing around getting ready for a run and what times he must have had there. We lost him this past year and I look forward to made coming to Wickenby and having a look.
I've been there several times. Nice free museum in the old control tower. Friendly people in the cafe downstairs. Still operational for pleasure and training flights.
I have been to many of these places....often as a child..and then as a young man...it is impossible to re-visit them without sensing the immeasurable loss and limitless courage of the young men and women that once occupied these crumbling buildings....so much more should be done to protect at least a few of them...and yet year after year, an increasing number of the airfields are decommissioned and demolished....a real smear on British aviation preservation and heritage.....
Great film! Worth a read is Jack Currie's book 'Target Lancaster' which is his memories of serving here during WW2. An interesting airfield although not one of Lincolnshire's famous one! www.626-squadron.co.uk/
fantastic video, you have really captured the atmosphere, thanks.
