    Just reviewed this lesson for a friend - complete noob to uke. Very clear and well paced intro. Talk a lot about tuning and a good section at the end about possible problems, however the thing missing at the start is the mechanics of actually HOW to tune ie which way to turn the pegs etc. Fairly fundamental if just using this video as an intro. I know it may seem obvious but not to a complete noob.

    Excellent, Phil. I've played ukulele for about eight year and the guitar for 55+ years and I never tire of well presented lessons for any skill level. The basics are always good to review and study. Now, if I can only get my thumb to the back of the neck. This was very good. I look forward to lesson two.

    I'm relieved to have found you! I feel encouraged that I can do this with your help. I'm 75 and don't feel it, and I want to strum and sing on my own. Gotta build some callouses now!

    Phil, I cannot thank you enough for the preparation and care you put into this. Your reassuring manner was a perfect fit for my sister, Nan, who is cognitively impaired and trying to learn to play. I sat with her throughout this lesson, pausing and practicing as she needed. By the end of one sitting, she was transitioning from C to F rather fluidly, thanks to your expert teaching! We are looking forward to much more! I'm really hoping you decide to create similar videos for the Baritone Uke, cause I just bought my first one! Cheers, Brian.

    Hello Phil,
    Just want to say thank you for your very obvious commitment to what you do. I was able to order a wide neck.
    I think I am going to concentrate on the chord drills and the strumming patterns in these beginning days and purchase your book on the ukulele music theory connection. Thanks again.

    Hello. Just signed up with Patreon today. Getting a concert ukulele for Christmas that I asked my husband for. Liked the easy way you explain things in your beginner lessons. I started saving the 5 lessons to a playlist and thought why not just sign up and get all the lessons. Didn't realize there are only 5 beginner lessons though, thought there would be more. Where do I go next after I finish these 5 beginner lessons ? Thanks for providing these lessons. Looking forward to being able to play some music before too long.

      Hi Marion,
      Thanks for signing up. On Patreon the lessons are tagged by level, from 1 to 4, so you'll find lots of level 1 songs to learn that only use a few simple chords. I'll send you a welcome message via Patreon that'll tell you all about how it works!

    I'd love to learn how to play the ukulele with a finger picking style where the uke is the hero. Yes, it's fun to chord and sing along, but there's something so much more challenging and satisfying when learning how to play gorgeous songs on the uke with that finger picking style... almost as you would play a piano. Do you teach that style?

    • @PhilDoleman
      @PhilDoleman  3 роки тому

      Thank you! Do you mean on the F chord? You can, but later on you may find other chords much harder so it's best to persevere with the first two fingers. I shouldn't be a strecth, and it may be your hand position that's making it hard, so play around with that. I'm doing a video on hand position very soon!

    Hi Phil we are loving your videos. I have a question. I find it easier to strum with my thumb and like the warmer sound it creates. I realize this could be a problem at some point bit Im just trying to get the best sound out of my instrument...

    • @PhilDoleman
      @PhilDoleman  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! I frequently strum with my thumb for he same reason. The only time it will be an issue is when you want to do things like the triple strum, which uses fingers and thumb.

      Is the fretboard on the Soprano wider than the Tenor?

    • @PhilDoleman
      @PhilDoleman  2 роки тому

      It really depends on the individual uke, there are wide neck sopranos, narrow neck tenors and vice-versa!
