The irons you see on the roof of some houses are actually extensions of the foundation to make a plate and build another floor. Nowadays its more convenient and there are other ways to extent a property but 30-40 years ago it was a common practice. In Cyprus/Greece they used to do it mainly for the next generation (In order for their kids to build right above them). Even if you had another plot to build you might choose to be next to your parents as we are very family oriented. Another great way of saying you might get some help from the grand parents in raising your children 😁
About Samaria facilities you asked, in the area of the factory there are water drillings that collect the water which travels underground there from Lefka Ori area which is next to Samaria Area (and gorge of course). Samaria water has won a few world awards for its taste.
... Nice videos guys, I'm really enjoying them! I suggest you spot few abandoned houses or pieces of land and then go on and ask the locals if they're for sale. Sometimes people there won't consider selling their properties unless they get an offer! Good luck with your search!...
@@Sunpire the cactus fruit you can eat it but is a little bit tricky to remove the skin and find the flesh of the fruit because of tiny invisible thorns ! but it is very tastefull especially when it is cold !
Guys this village is very lovely, too bad you didn't find out many offers. Maybe you should leave your card here and there: Amalia & Raul buying land / old house... don't know if is a good idea 🙃. Anyway the episode is success, keep it going !
Why don't you buy an old house with a plot bigger than 400m2 put one of those prefab tiny houses from that guy you visited some time ago .Live in it until you finish the house .When the house is finished you rent out the tiny house on airbnb.
We love the prefabricated houses, but they do need a building permit, that's why we are considering the old house option. We are still researching, but it seems that it's a long wait to get a building permit.
You don't need a building permit for those ones. You do need some sort of permit, but from what we understand, it's cheaper and easier to get. We're still in the research phase. We're not ruling out this situation. We need to see what we can find and what we can do with the money we have left.
Unfinished houses are not tax-free anymore, it was a thing long time ago. Now you have 4 years time to build the house, otherwise you need a new building permit. I personally hate it if those metal rods are visible in general if you compare the villages to mainland Greece, for example Nymphaio, Elati, Metsovo, Tsepelovo you name it, or on Peloponnese, Corfu and so on, ofc for me Cretan villages dont look thaaat great, a little bit messy, not ugly, but not much stone architecture and so on, they still look chill and the areas are nice, I could live there, and many houses, stand alone, are nice. Seems to be a very private thing on Crete how your house looks, fewer regulations, that can be a nice thing. If you dont find anything, you still can go for the plot with a prefabricated house. But ofc, i would want to be 100% sure that I really can build this house on the Land. Good luck. And I would love to see Raul with a traditional small Romanian hat and the microphone protection on the top of the hat. 👌
Thank you for your complex and well thought comment 👍🏻 🙏💙🤗🤗💙. As for a Romanian hat 👒 😂😂😂 maybe will try something like that next time when we visit Romania. Protection for microphone from tzitziki maybe 😂😂
Villages in Crete and in Greece in general are in big decline. Some villages are almost completely isolated as elder people pass away, and newer generations are moving to cities. If something did not change you will end up living alone. Think again about that.
Τhe reason that houses are incompleted is children's unwillingness to stay in the village..It is common to leave their villages and relocate to the cities, so older people are not up το build anymore.

I'm joking, we really appreciate you leaving comments to all our vlogs and taking the time to watch all of them.🙏 We try to learn greek slowly when we have the time, we are still learning English too, as you can see we're not doing great😂 we want to do so many things is hard to do all of them.
There are books and UA-cam videos to help you learn the languages. Watching children's shows on TV and listening to music. Sign up for a class. Perhaps the instructor will know someone selling a property. Food for thought.

We might just do that in the future 🤗💙
the irons on the roof are for the builders to find where the columns are in case you want to build another floor!
Thank you! I thought so! 😅
Regarding the cactus fruit, the Greek name of it is Φραγκόσυκο (frangósiko), translated to "prickly pear" in English and you can eat it.
Thank you for this info 💙 🙏
Raul-Amalia, don't stand next to barking dogs and cicadas... I can't hear!
Thanks. 😎

You can eat the cactus fruit for sure. Just be careful of its thorns!

❓Would you buy land or an old house?🤔
I think people should start listening to the rumours and the history of Cretan villages before deciding to move there.
what do you mean?
What rumours are you referring to?

Are you prepared to live in a village? Think it again.
We have to see more villages to get a better idea
To be honest except 3-4 villages Crete has the worst looking villages in all of Greece along with lowland villages from Thesally and further north.
Which one are those 3 - 4 villages?
