I never played guitar, but this guy's passion with the instrument and the way he talks about music.. it's really inspiring. This is my favorite channel.
As an American Ex-Pat in Switzerland born with two left ears, you really have one of the best channels for people that will never pick up a guitar, You have respect for the artist, and talent to show his skills. And you play wicked well.
For me this is one of the defining songs of the early 70s. Once your hear the haunting melody you’ll never forget it. For sure one of the most soulful compositions and playing ever, combining the best elements of folk, western and pop rock.
Wonderful! I got to see Neil in 72 or 73, (memory lapse) acoustic only, all by himself.. it was surreal. Yes he can sing,, write, and play. Got to see Jim Croce too.. Similar talent there lost too soon.. Thanks for the video, it's awesome. I still have the Heart of Gold Guitar song book.
Wow you have such an ear for all the subtle variations that make the differences of sound quality that original artists bring to their songs. Excellent teaching ability and priceless amount of work is given to your viewers. I really think these are the BEST lessons on UA-cam. Your enthusiasm is infectious and clearly shows your outstanding teaching skills ! I can only get better with every view of your great lessons and the knowledge you are passing on to viewers. Thank you very much for your hard work. Mike from Boston
This us what a good teacher acts like..could hang with this dude alllll day....ah,the simple joy of life...gotta love it,gotta live it......perfect song to trip on,don't youthink?
I thought I was shot hot when I was able to strum along to this. Not sure, looking back, how well I did it, but it was early days and it gave me the inspiration to carry on. 30+ years later I am still banging away on guitars and loving it! I've been playing bands all this time and still think I have much to learn.
really awesome! Being a virtuoso like you is a great goal, but getting a great rhythm guitar lesson that can give the average player tools that they can incorporate into multiple songs is really useful. I wish i saw this video 3o years ago!!!! thanks for the joy!
Probably Neil's golden song and moment. It is amazing to see that nobody from the crowd noticed the glory of this song at its first audition in the original video clip.
Great tutorial. You really have a knack for pointing out great qualities in guitar playing that we might overlook and being able to clearly teach those techniques.
Neil Young one of Canada's most beloved exports for us old timers. Pete Seeger had written on his guitar " this guitar fights fascism " . They were true poets that sang songs of the politics of the sixties and early seventies.
Love me some Neil Young. Perhaps something a bit more challenging like Neil's "Captain Kennedy"? That sea chantey style is great but I am stumped on even attempting to play it. Thanks for the great videos sir and stay safe.
Thank-you so much for featuring Neil Young. Have followed your channel for a long time so it was a real treat when I saw today’s post featuring Neil Young, one of my all-time favorites. “The Needle and the Damage Done”, “Cinnamon Girl”, “Down By The River”. There are so many great choices, but I guess you selected a song suited for acoustic guitar. For me, Neil Young songs are like masterpiece paintings. Each one creates a music landscape. It’s not that he tries to play a flurry of notes but instead creates a mood. He is like no other. I don’t have enough music theory knowledge to be able to explain it but it’s like seeing Rembrandt or a Vermeer for the first time. You know it’s something extraordinary even if you can’t paint. Please, delve into more Neil Young. By the way, thanks for making your lesson easy enough for a beginner like me.
Great lesson thank you so mych.. I recognised the King Creole album immediately as I have an original copy borrowed from a friend’s mother 40 years ago 😂
You give great commentary and video plus personal examples along with easy clear explanations & demonstrations with the right way and wrong way of doing things in a passionate and exciting way! Best way to learn! love it! Thanks man!
Well done. I recently learned this song on request. Easy tune but you have captured some important nuances in an easily digestible form. Again, well done!
Love playing Neil Young songs. He plays them differently every time... big help, you can get away with making sound like it ought to be the song, but not quite. Lots of it is in the rhythm, picking, hammer ons & palm muting. His electric & rockier songs soung great on acoustic also.
Great stuff, thank you. And what a delightfully quirky little clip of Young strumming Out on the Weekend on the banjo which, by the way, would make for a great tutorial by you! :)
YT suggested to me this channel. The best suggestion ever! Thom, I watched most of your videos, keep doing what do, you are great! Definitely becoming your patron.
Hey pilgrim when are we going to hear some of your original songs and performances ? Someone with your musical understanding has got to have some great stuff
Congratulations! Great work. I subscribe with the hope that you will show how to play Neil Young's Captain Kennedy, only three chords, but really hard to get the sounds he is capable of producing out of the guitar. I've tried a thousand times, but it's impossible for me to even get close to what he does. Thank you!
Your just a great teacher. I love your style. You got mad skills. What country are you from. Im a kiwi and neil young is so awesome. Your videos are teaching me heaps. Thanks
@@GuitarPilgrim oh yes holland is a beautiful country. I lived in Groningen for a while. I worked at the bedum cheese factory. Cheers and all the best.
i love the video... U R DA BEST!! But, man, u r teasing us with Elvis' King Creole in the background. Any chance u can do a song from that classic Elvis album? Did I mention u r da best (lame attempt at buttering u up) big thanks as always
Yeah but he can play like anybody in the world and I know if he played the song for the love of god.....it can be as good as Steve vai played if by himself
Great video! Your clips are really useful and full of good knowledge. May i ask for a future one about Sturgill Simpson's solo set en Tiny Desk? There's some hard af embelishments and licks he does that i can't wrap my head around. Cheers!

Isn't he fantastic?! I'm so glad I found his videos, really inspiring
@@Twoflowers43..idd very inspiring..😅..glad i found him..
Yeah.. This guy sooo cool
This is the best UA-cam lesson on this classic song. As usual Thom has absolutely nailed the small details that make the biggest difference.
Even when I think I know a song inside out, I always learn something new from your videos. Really great stuff.

Thanks Lawrence, I'm glad you like the videos!
Neil Young is probably the musician's musician. Great songwriting and musical arrangements, what more could you ask for! Awesome work!
You and Paul Davids are just the best. My two Dutch guitar teachers ahah
Greeting from Milan brother

Love this dude. The enthusiasm is infectious - such an important thing for a teacher. Also, he gets it right... has respect for the music.
that bbc concert is one of the best concerts on film. No clapping,no phones, no heckling - perfect acoustic set.

This might be the single best, most informative guitar tutorial I’ve ever watched. Outstanding!
Your analysis of music styles and artists is pure genius!

Old man is such a great song to play and learn from Neil. Great video
Great tutorial. You really have a knack for pointing out great qualities in guitar playing that we might overlook and being able to clearly teach those techniques.
Loved Neil Young when I was a kid and still do. Heart of Gold was one of the first songs that I ever learned on acoustic guitar.
I guess my english is improving!
@@GuitarPilgrim I don't know what your first language is, but you speak English just like the King 🤴🙂
Great demonstration and placement of King Creole album.
This is very good. And difficult to teach. Neil's feel is his and his alone it's hard to duplicate but you demonstrated it well.
Bravo! Un gran piacere seguirti.

That was awesome lesson Dude! Thank You and greetings from Poland !
Thanks again you really break down a song well and make it a simple lesson. My guitar skills have improved a lot since subscribing.
Every time I checkout the Pilgrims page I learn something new, I’ve played for years as well. Thanks once again for your videos my friend.
My favourite youtuber has just made a video about my favourite musician. Now I can finally die happy.
Your lessons are terrific. Would love to see you focus on Pete Townshend for a video,
I've been playing Neil Young ever since he was young.

Another great and passionate singer/songwriter which is worthwhile to watch is Jason Isbell. Maybe next time?
I am still waiting for "Chicken in the Corn by Brushy One String."

Got my wire cutters ready🤣
Do some of his electric stuff, like Cortez the Killer or Like a Hurricane

It would be awesome If you talk about some of the electric work from him, too.
And guys don’t forget..Make sure you take 23 hours and 55 minutes setting up before you play.
Excellent Thanks for sharing 👍🙏🎸🎼🎶
I love this thanks for featuring Neil Young.

I love Neil Young's stuff. Your videos too Pilgrim! Dank je wel friend. :)

How much cool and amazing you can be, great video

Heart of gold is my favorite song by Young.
Imortal Neil Young!

Arguably one of the 10 greatest songwriters in rock history. Harvest (the album "Heart of Gold" is from) is still his best record, imo.
Pilgrim, dissect "Wish You Were Here" please
Well I love Steve vai ........make a video on him please...... play for the love of god
Yeah but he can play like anybody in the world and I know if he played the song for the love of god.....it can be as good as Steve vai played if by himself
Those times when he play something cool than he stops and laughs, are priceless ahaha
Nice video, thanks for posting!

Amazing how Neil's 1st record contract was with Barry Gordy & MOTOWN RECORDS. It was a foot in the door , eh?
