So this is how I think the taking away bending trick works. Amon uses bloodbending to reverse the chi flow of benders, blocking their chi paths and rendering them incapable of bending. It's a combination of Aang's energybending(just done with bloodbending), and Ty Lee's abilities as well. The story of Yakone, Amon, and Tarlokk is literally the same as the Fire Nation Royal Family. Yakone is an abusive father, like Ozai. Tarrlok is the weak member who turned evil because of what was done to him, like Zuko. Amon is the prodigy who was turned into a weapon, like Azula
This is what I was thinking, especially with how the Chakras were connected to elements in ATLA it seems like Amon is able to block the flow to them the same way Azula blocked Aang’s connection to the Avatar State. Oh that’s such a good point 😂 hadn’t realised it but you’re so right they literally have the same dynamics and origins.
Okay explaining in detail how Amon uses Bloodbending to 'take away bending ' and no it's not the same as Aang who uses Energybending. Although his Father maybe the more 'powerful' bender bending the whole courtroom, Amon's greatest assest is his ingenuity, skill and creativity. Need to explain how Healing with waterbending works-- as we know In avatar universe everyone including non benders have a life energy flowing in them callled chi and some waterbenders can manipulate the chi inside one to and enhance/focus it at one injured part to rejuvenate or speed up the healing process..Amon took this and added to what he learnt from chi blockers how they block this energy flow by hitting certain points and their knowledge of the body and energy..he also learnt about avatar taking away bending and looked up on chakras..He took up all this and used the water/blood bending to permanently manipulate one's chi pathways, stunting it within and thereby blocking the chakra pools so although they have the ability they can't bring it out forth..It's more like blocking the bending for good than taking it away as Aang does with energy bending.
Thanks for explaining this, think I put it together in the next episode that it must be connected to Chakra’s the same way Azula was able to block Aang from the Avatar State. But this also highlights the impercipience of Amon’s plan, if Amon only blocks bending, wouldn’t it be possible for children from blocked benders to have their ability unblocked as their energy wouldn’t be interrupted?
@@benspiller While I personally think Amon is the most powerful non avatar bender you see in the shows he does seem a little too overconfident with his "take" bending ability and doesn't realise that it does have some limitations as it's not energy bending if the chi and chakra is already blocked it won't work.
I think tarrlok was always more like his father than he wanted to admit. His idea was essentially to enact the same iron fist of authority, but from within the government rather than opposed to it. He wanted power and control, just like his father. He just decided to do it "legally" instead. Until, of course, he was confronted by the fact that he was perpetuating the same kind of abuses he was subjected to.
Enjoying your Korra reactions. You might enjoy a 9 minute web series you can find on YT entitled "Republic City Hustle". It is set three years prior to the events chronicled in The Legend of Korra and explores the history of Mako and Bolin. It was written by veteran Avatar writer Tim Hedrick and employs the talents of David Faustino and P. J. Byrne, the voice actors for Mako and Bolin. I think you'll enjoy it and it doesn't spoil anything from Korra.
This also further explains Tarrlok's "Savior" complex, apparent as the weakest of his family, father was a crimelord strong enough to contend w/ the Avatar, older brother was a prodigy torn apart by the need to be perfect (lowkey Azula vibes, though technically speaking she's actually younger than Zuko) who later just up and leaves, everywhere he turned he wasn't "good enough" so he had to become "the best" even if he had to stray the path to get there.
Absolutely love how this episode recontextualises everything!! It’s amazing what it does for Tarrlok to go from an insane villain to someone you can actually empathise with, this one episode managed to make this character incredibly deep!
We literally see a flashback of the brothers fighting as kids, that's how he figured it out; as far as is known, the Yakones and Katara are the only modern day BB...😂
@ I understand that but what’s to say another water benders blood vending feels the same or watever if he never had sumone else do it to him? Like how would he know that every try water benders blood bending is different by just having it done once?
I’m pretty sure after Katara introduced the world to blood bending a lot of water benders tried to learn it hence why it was made illegal bc it’s a bad technique and that no1 should know but since the knowledge is out there n very well known ppl will try to learn it to have it as their ace up their sleeves.
Think the exact same thing!! It’s one thing to sense a different style to your own but Tarrlok could just put that down to the differences between him and his brother, to recognize the difference in technique has to mean there are others!
Sadly I think every single season of Korra suffers from not having enough episodes wish they could go into detail like this more often. As well as I wish that they had someone properly explain that Amon was really using bloodbending to chi block people as he wasn't really taking bending away at all. To better explain that what he was doing was not the same thing as energybending at all.
korra could benefit from having more episodes I do still really like it and personally i like how it's never right to explain because it leaves some mysteries which i really like but that's just my opinion
I do agree with this, I am impressed with how much they've been able to do with so few episodes but it would have benefited so much with added time! They could have gone far more in-depth in the structure of the city, Tarrlok's madness and finer detail of how Amon is able to do everything he does.
32:42 you said something similar to this last time & I responded, but just to bring up another point: remember how Bolin was kidnapped and nearly got his bending taken in episode 3? Amon is a direct threat to their bodily autonomy too, not just to their livelyhood. They then specifically use this in episode 4 to connect Bolin with how Korra was feeling - I don't feel they've done a poor job of connecting him & Mako to the conflict at all
I do agree now that the connection is there but when compared to the other characters, Bolin and Mako are not defined by this connection to the Story, Korra is the Avatar which demands involvement, and Asami is the daughter of one of the antagonists, Mako, however, has far more focus on his relationship than why he's fighting and Bolin's focus is on his comedic presence rather than his relevance to the story. I wish their relevance to the fight was the focus for them rather than relationships and comedy, Sokka is a good example of how they were able to balance him as the comedic relief but also gave plenty of examples as to why he was essential to the Avatar's success.
iroh was is in his 50's to 60's in the original series but the way he looks acts and talks Make him seem much older Which is probably why people think couldn't have lived long enough to be there zuko had kids that is my best guess anyway
For some reason I've been thinking Iroh was way older than he was 😂😂 but to be fair if you put Ozai and Iroh next to each other would you not assume one is much younger than the other.
@benspiller lol I think it trips people up because most of the main cast is so young in comparison. He's actually around tenzin's age, but the general maturity of the people he's around skews our perspective as the audience.
Amon is bendig. Or rather it is suspected. Chi blokers are very skilled against benders bc they are very agile and hard to hit. But Amon usualy dont jump around like monkey. Most his fights looks like his oponents missing him.... somehow... like some weird force influence their aim.... if you know what i mean.
Ohh this is so cool to think about, this entire time this man has been so powerful that he subtly bend his opponents to miss him instead of him having the manoeuvrability to dodge them.
Uh - this episode is awesome - how is completely recontextualize Amon and Tarlokk's characters - well obviously it doesn't excuse any of their crimes I can't help but to feel bad for them due to how horrible their childhood was - Tarlokk was desperate to be the savior to proof himself better than his to father and brother's ghosts - but most of all himself due to how much he seems to hate himself - and Amon does lie about most things but he does tell the truth when he says that he believes he is helping people - also Zuko's only child was a daughter and Iroh was only in his fifties in Airbender - and Korra takes place 70 years after so he probably had around 20 more years to live - I have always like to believe Iroh was sort of a grand father figure to Zuko's daughter which is why she named her son after him - it's never fully explained how Amon can remove bending but it is essentially him destroying their connection to their chakar - the body parts where their chi flows from allowing them to bend - which is deferent from how the Avatar can bend life energy itself - and you are misremembering Korra is from the Southern Tribe just like Sokka, Katara and Hama - and I appreciate how you unlike a lot of other people understand just because Korra have learned her lesson of patience doesn't mean her more impulsive habits are just magically going to disappear - sorry for how long the comment ended up being
Completely agree! Still a little in shock with what it does for these characters from taking them to pure evil villains representing to extreme sides of a coin to having them be so deep in story that you can empathise with them and feel sorry for them. Their crimes are still inexcusable, but this just adds to the complexity and humanity of the story where the villains aren’t just evil maniacs bent on taking over the world but actually hurt people who try and bend the world to heal themselves. Honestly didn’t realise Iroh was so young in ATLA 😂 Glad to know he would have a relationship with his great-granddaughter and that it was so strong that she named her kid after him! Thought this too with the Chakra, especially how their connection to the elements was explained in ATLA, seems like Amon was able to block the connection the same way Azula blocked Aang’s connection to the Avatar State. Took me a while to understand this stuff about Korra but it makes so much sense now, her character is far from being like Aang so I shouldn’t have expected her to go on the same journey, her stubbornness is as part of her character as Aang’s childishness was to him, as she learns patience her impulsiveness won’t go away but that doesn’t mean she isn’t becoming more patient. Edit: Iroh's age is confusing me and for some reason I thought he was Zuko's 'grand' relative for a sec and not father 😂
Its not exactly "the world", its the normal country military. Aang and Zuko founded the "United Republic of Nations" - with the capital "Republic City". The "United Forces" are basically just the military defending their own capital. But I get what you mean.
Ah so Aang and Zuko reshaped the world even more than I thought!? 😂 I thought the city was essentially a Fifth Nation, but I guess it’s actually the capital for the entire world then making the Military for the world but just happens to be defending their capital.
Asami and Mako did break up in this episode, but she is already well established as a friend to him and Bolin after she housed them and then moved to the temple with them after.
I think I just wish that her friendship with them was as focused on as the romantic relationships, didn't actually catch that they broke up either so bear with me in the next episode as I thought they completely skipped over this 😂
You finally seem to have grasped who Korra is as a headstrong character also I am sorry but telling the truth would NOT have worked for Amon, lot of issues there, using the already present turmoil of non benders and using the propaganda is more efficient and smart..especially when Amon's true mentality does support and go along with a lot of 'equalist ideology' points.
Yeah it’s taken me a while but it’s now clear I was looking at Korra’s story the same way I looked at Aang’s which just doesn’t work, still think the truth could have provided different options for him which could have led him to success, having it be a giant lie from the start gave him a massive weakness where this entire movement could crumble, having it be the truth would have made it more of a struggle to recruit people but could have still resulted in enough people wanting to irradicate Bending.
The story of Amon and is brother is very simular to Zuko and Azulas in a way. Both used as tools by their father, exept they manage to overpower him. And from What we have seen Amon is Definetly the most powerfull Bloodbender out of all of them, not Even sure if Katara in her Prime could take him, considering he does not really bend, Even if she can tesist his bloodbending he could take her bending away, and he has an even greater power: The power of the people🚩🚩 Like he sed himself: What could be more powerfull than a bender, then someone that can take bending away
Yes he is a perfectly written villain and incredibly terrifying also I never consider before how they story parallels the story of Zuko and Azulas very cleverly noticed
This is so true; their stories are so similar in origin with the main difference being the siblings still cared for each other and chose their relationship over their father. Oh completely agree! I hate to think about it but Katara would be no match for Amon, he can blood bend in daylight and can do it psychically, all he has to do is stare at Katara while the sun’s out to take her down.

Low key if h can tell the difference between blood bending techniques that means he’s met others and or fought other blood benders.
