    Thanks Dave, good information. I like the way you bring that info with a bit of humor.👍
    Your channel became my favorite for EV info.
    Maybe I can explain why we don't take subscriptions.
    We will charge at home 95% of the time. Our battery is 44kWh.
    And that 4 or 5 times a year we have to charge on route, it is to top of maybe 30kWh. That can be at Fastned, Tesla or somewhere else.
    So there are no savings with monthly subscriptions.

    I paid 40p per kWh at the Trentham Gardens Tesla Superchargers. They were quite busy with EVs coming & going. I think they’re V3 Chargers & I found the cable to be a bit short. Food and drink there was cheaper than I expected

    We tried Westmorland when we stopped for a break at Tebay in early June. The first charger we tried simply would not start charging so we moved to a different charger. This started but cut off after about 15 minutes. Not a great experience.
    I did see three other drivers fail to get a charge from the first machine we tried so it was definitely faulty.
    Add this to a distinctly average "cup of tea" experience and Tebay is no longer on my list as a good place to stop.

    I drive 15000 miles a year. I use away from home chargers less than once every two months (excepting holidays) to sip to get home. Until all networks are saturated everywhere it isn't worth the membership.

    I would love to try and electric vehicle, but aps, credit cards, and the expense of purchasing an electric vehicle, I have no credit history, no credit card, no technical phone, I couldn't afford to buy even the cheapest electric vehicle that would cope with my daily commute, I can't pay for electricity because I can't get a credit card, neither do I have a technical phone, I have a phone that makes phone calls, and I exppect the ap company charges the companies try to ap or whatever you do with aps, but why can't these companies charge a standard price without the need to buy a technical phone that probably costs 10 times what the ap is meant to save you? Where are the prices displayed? Are they a standard price countrywide? For the older drivers who don't know how to use a computer or technical phone, does this mean they get ripped off because they don't know because they've never been taught how to use them? Then there's the charge points that don't work, someone on another UA-cam channel told me I am stupid because I pointed out that many chargers aren't visible, he told me that I'm stupid because every charger is clearly advertised, I recently pulled into a car park and there was one solitary charge point at the edge of the car park covered in bushes, another car park in the midlands, again at the corner of the car park, not visible at that time of the morning, there's 8 charge points in a local car park, again not very visible, but still not connected to the grid either.
    I buy my diesel in the cheapest place possible and where I can pay with CASH as I don't have any form of credit or bank card, for me, even though I'm not credit worthy, I prefer to use cash, if I haven't got it, I can't spend it, simple as life was before everyone was expected to know how to use computers and have to have a credit card, electric vehicles and computers, credit cards etc have complicated life for the older generations

    • @davetakesiton
      @davetakesiton  Місяць тому

      Stick with your ICE diesel smokestack, Andrew, but definitely work on getting a credit rating. Not for EV purposes, but many things, like utility bills are cheaper if you have a rating and pay on direct debit. BTW my dad, who died recently at the age of 97, had an iPad with online banking, insurance, Farm Food delivery account, and of course emails and FaceTime to keep in touch with family around the world. He loved the freedom it gave him as his legs began to refuse to walk as far. Ref your comment about hidden EV chargers, I went to Exeter services and they have 32 superchargers, all plainly visible, all connected to the grid and many in use, working away. Not sure what your point here is.

    • @andrewgage6942
      @andrewgage6942 Місяць тому

      @@davetakesiton my point is that there's a lot of charge points still not connected to the grid and there's also a lot of charge points not visible in many places, tucked in dark corners of pubs and car parks, if you don't know they're there you'll miss them, motorway services mostly have space dedicated for charging but others in towns where there may just be one charge point, it may not be visible or even overgrown with bushes and trees around it
      I haven't got a clue what to do to get a credit rating, the bank classes me as a high risk, I don't like the idea of cards, I like to know what I have, to be honest, at my time of life, I've got by this far, I don't think I'll be around long enough for that to affect me anyway, I live in the centre of town, the bank is less than 500 yards away from my house, I can always get cash if I need it apart from Sundays and holidays, then I take enough out for emergencies, I guess I'm from a different generation where we got by without holes in the wall, credit cards, mobile phones and computers and survived

If you do half the business, for double the price your onto a winner. Supermarkets killed off the competition with cheap petrol prices, then increased the price. No competition you see. Firstly a big congratulations on reaching the 10k Subscriber mark.
    Great information again Dave. Wonderful to finally see that one or two charging companies have reduced their charges, hoping the rest will follow soon.
    It is great that you have started to add the fact that many journies are within a 100% charge range so would not be needed, this is information that a lot of new EV drivers or prospective owners seem to miss. If you are able to charge at home, this moves the requirement for any charges to be 150 to 200 miles away. Quite a different way of thinking, as generally you want to know you can get back to your preferred petrol station!!

    Cheers for doing this Dave, Zapmap use to be the goto place for this but they are a waste of space now.
    Run by their sponsors by the looks of it.
    They've still not added an EV charger on their site that I and many others told them about. Probably because it is only 60p kWh with an electroverse card, which is far cheaper than their sponsors, the charger is E-on btw.

    When I visited Blackpool I was pleased to see a couple of Type2 AC chargers in the central car park. Since I was paying to park there for a couple of days I was able to leave the Leaf charging while I slept in a nearby B&B. Think it was 49ppkwh.
    Had a similar experience in an overnight trip to Cardiff.
    Come to sunny Lowestoft and play hunt the EV chargers. 63p at a McDonald’s is our best.

  • @computerbob06
    @computerbob06 Місяць тому +2

    Dave. Don't forget if you charge at Osprey through the Electroverse app or card between 7pm and 11pm you get a 20% discount, just like Gridserve, so you end up paying 63p/kwh - which (unlike Gridserve) applies in winter as well!

  • @stevieallan9778
    @stevieallan9778 Місяць тому +2

    Sorry , Sorry but I need to stop you right there on one point you keep going to.
    One I am an EV driver not a combustion driver, so you know what side of the fence I am from although I am a petrolhead and have and love my classic cars.
    You keep saying “STOP CHARGING TO 100%” Well I say to you “STOP IT”
    I have 2 electric vehicles EQA 250 and an env 200 one with 250 miles and one with 150-mile range
    Car is nearly always charged with a 7kWh wall charger, van nearly always charged with a 22-kWh wall charger. The car is charged to 100% once or twice a week at the house, the van is topped up every morning at work when I get in, as if needed it has to be ready to work. This is not causing any inconvenience to anybody time wise.
    It has been proven that slow charging like this is not doing any harm to the battery, in fact the van being charged like this is still got full battery range after 3 years this van only gets used within a certain area to reduce the need for rapid charge as is wasting drivers time and that costs money.
    As for the car If I am driving from Scotland to England I am going to stop to charge and why on earth am I not going to charge to 100% as I will need to use this power and stop again to charge anyway.
    The only way I need to charge with a rapid is on long distance in that case you not want to go to 100%?

    • @djtaylorutube
      @djtaylorutube Місяць тому

      On a long trip, depending on stops you'd make slower progress charging to 100% each time. Example:-
      0 to 80% - 30 mins
      80 to 100% - 30 mins.
      Vehicle range of real 250 miles, that 80% gets 200 miles every 30 mins of charge. The extra 20% is waiting the same amount of extra time to add just 50 miles.
      As with everything though it's nuanced.
      If on a very long, multi-stop trip, our stops will aim to sync with eating and at that point, I'll let the car take on whatever extra because the car is usually ready first.
      Also, if waiting a bit longer removes an additional stop then that also makes more sense. 👍

    Wonderful guide.
    Have now jumped on to the Tesla charging ecosystem.
    Found the price well below what I have been using to charge my Volvo XC40.
    Also took advantage of the yearly subscription, bringing down further the subscription to £7.50.
    On my way to Nottinghamshire, my return journey was £26.00 from London approximately
    Again, taking advantage of the low price of 0.35p at Bromley, i filled up.
    So far, fingers crossed, it’s a winner for me.
    Used to be on the BP Pulse subscription model, ummm….

    I am getting weary of plugging into "7-22KW" destination chargers, and finding they only give 2-3KW; just had it happen again at the Podmore carpark at Weymouth; I needed 15KW, expected 2hr 30 mins, so took a book to read; but it was only charging at 3KW (40% initial state of charge), with an estimate of 5 hrs 45 minutes. Luckily, the carpark is free 6pm to 8am; so I abandoned the car and went to bed until 6am.
    I have yet to see how much I am going to get ripped off for in KWh costs.
    Mine was the only car there, using one of the four chargers, so it wasnt a case of sharing power with other cars.

    Just been on my first ev holiday to Cornwall, Eden project said 55p but Marshall’s didn’t indicate where to park and just shoved us into a normal car park. But there were plenty to choose from in looe and managed to get onto a Tesla at 61p on the m5 compared to 64p on chargers opposite that more were using as they didn’t have a Tesla… people don’t realise that most are now open. Zap map are useless now. What is wrong are those that have no tariffs shown on the charger, petrol wouldn’t be able to get away with it

    I only use rapid chargers on my annual holiday road trip from South Yorkshire to the Scottish Highlands, this summer I signed up to Fastned Gold Membership as I usually use them on the way there but not on the way back as I normally come back stop of to visit a friend by a different route. This year used the same route there and back so 2 charges each way, Barnard Castle and Hamilton, just signed up for 1 month but it saved me quite a bit, just as an aside CPS chargers north of the border are nothing like as good value as they used to be, thankfully there were a number of 7kW fast chargers in a leisure centre car park with no parking time limit or parking charge a 5 minute walk from the B&B I stayed at, 30p per kWh, since June it's gone up to 40p, they obviously don't watch you videos Dave 😉

    Good guide. What is missing from this and many other videos referring to Tesla chargers is telling non Tesla drivers how to charge at Tesla superchargers. It is essential to not block 2 chargers at once but nobody on UA-cam seems to be telling people how you achieve this. You must always use the charger a Tesla would use ie when it reverses in, it’s the charger on the passenger side to the rear. If your charging port is on the other side, you will have to drive in and not reverse in order to use the correct charger. I have witnessed even v4 chargers being used wrongly and non Tesla cars blocking 2 chargers. This is not acceptable, especially at busy times of day.

And it also helps with remoter parts of west Wales as BP have 50kw chargers at some hotels. But looking forward to the big new ionity at Swansea when it opens. No cheap charging in the area apart from Tesla carmarthen, so should do well with South Wales tourists.

      I believe Tesla is proactively preparing for potential government regulations that will likely require them to open their Superchargers to all EVs, as has already happened in some European countries. While the v3 Superchargers work well for Teslas or vehicles with charge ports positioned where Tesla anticipates, they need to either extend the cables on these chargers or upgrade them to the v4 models to accommodate a wider range of vehicles.
