i recall when i was starting bass, in 87 id been playing cello and upright bass in orchestra...i got into that because my dad is a phd and if i ended up wanting music or being musical he directed me..and i recall when (lessons in love) from level 42 came out and i honestly at 14 thought it was a synth bass arpegigator.and then the fact he sings on top of that...he has cordination that astounds me 26 years on now..he learned in a few years, its taken me 3 times that to keep near him, a bass idol
His vibrato is awesome! Makes the bass very vocal and melodic. He is one of my influences to add vibrato like this into my bass playing. Vibrato happens with singers and wind instruments, As well as Keyboard Players with the pitch bend wheel, and Guitar Players are well known for doing vibrato. But it is not something that Bass Players do very often. So I decided to fix that into my own playing.
Thanks Minxa - this is Mark KIng being 'natural' at his nass playing, only judt learned after 2 years and would still love to play like this !! Thanks for posting m8
Yes you can hear Stan the Man in Marks playing; I bloody well hope so, !.Stan and Jaco have influenced several generations of players , Mark has a voice on the bass and with his great lead Vocals ,he is unique in that way .Love that Alembic ,the Status MKII is good as well, with a very stable neck.
@minx3a I thought he initially got 34" scale but didn't like it so he had the two 32" scale ones made the same. Anyway really nice video. This sort of style really compliments the Alembic unlike some of the live concerts (apart from the Ryde Theatre 2000 which sounds awesome) where it sounds too tinny IMO.
@SmakitNicely Both series one and Two have the hum Cancelling dummy coil. the difference is7 lamination's in the neck and pots instead of switches for the "Q' of the tone control in series II and more body lamination's as well . The series one has a 5 piece neck ,"Q" switches and less body lamination's.. More details available @ Alembic.com,cheers
I wish Mark would do more of this type of stuff live - less fast triplets and more melodic stuff. I also miss the great Alembic sound he had for a few years. Still, listening to MK play is always a pleasure in whatever context.
the long version of the bass bit on 'The Pier' - never seen this before! Great things from the King - can you get it converted to MP3? Thanks for posting
Yes, there is only one Stan Clarke just as there is only one MK !, both musicians havd had a huge influence on other bass players and music over the years, I don't agree that MK is a "one trick pony", but hey !, we are all entitled to our opinions !!!.
@alembic63 one trick pony my ass, wake the hell up. Check out the True Colours CD by Level 42. Yes Stan is one of the all time greats, but Mark is in the same league easily.
it's not like Victor Wooten is a child compared to mark king, because they have different style and soul I believe Vix can play every Mark King's stuffs, but thats just not Vix style

Absolutely right, spot on that man !, Stan Clarkes influence on MK really shows in his "noodling" here !.

Wow, this one's great ! Thanks for sharing this with us.
You can also hear Doug Rauch’s influence in Mark’s playing. Doug had a huge impact on Mark.

Mark King and Alembic ; A Winning Combination ! ( JUst like the poster says !)
Great story Moray! Thanks for sharing.
Great video.
Right Ramon, on this rec come out all the Clarke influences...
Mark's taste is unbelieveble however...
I love his style....
Top Groove master!
Awesome clip! The beginning sounded a bit like Lupsy Lu from s.Clarke :)
@minx3a You are more than welcome ,mate. You could tell me about JD's and Status i am sure,cheers
@TheMightyHartley I have to agree with you there !, I also have great respect for SC.

Your'e welcome mate, glad you enjoyed the clip !!.
Mike.
I personally like this Alembic bass a whole lot better. The tone is f.ckin' awsome!
That lick licks!............
Excelente Mark King!!! Lástima el camarógrafo desenfocando la imagen.
@MrMel0dy many thanks !!.
where did this footage come from?
@bluespirat I'd disagree. ONE small part sounds like SC, the rest is merely SC-influenced. I like SC, by the way.
Very welcome !!.
Sounds like Stanley Clarke's silly putty... but this does not prevent me from loving Mark. Always been a fan of these great bass players.
@76alembic: Thank you for the info !.
@NecaTheBoy95 Alembic, long scale 34" series 2

Some great tunes/jamming, but...the camera man/woman really sucks big time.
