Today we are visiting a local pond in search of wild plants and more Mosquito fish. This particular pond is currently undergoing a red algae bloom but it's not harming the life inside. This is part 1 of the trip, part 2 can be found here: • Collecting WILD Mosqui...
Mosquito fish are small freshwater fish, which are related to guppies. These are Eastern Mosquito Fish and they are slightly different from the western variety. Eastern Mosquito fish tend to be less aggressive towards tank mates and they make for great pets. They are quite shy yet extremely curious at the same time. Mosquito fish can tolerate a wide range of temperatures and water conditions. They are not pests and should not be treated with cruelty or malicious intent.
Eastern Mosquito fish will not eat live plants. They will eat small invertebrates and fish flake foods. This makes mosquito fish great pets for planted tanks. The scientific name for these mosquito fish is Gambusia holbrooki.
Gambusia is a large genus of over 40 different fish species. Some are extinct, like the yellow fin mosquito fish, while most others are thriving in our modern times. Most Gambusia species are found in freshwater habitats but some Gambusia types may be found in brackish or saltwater habitats. They can be found naturally occuring in the south eastern states of North America, extending well into Mexico and further south.
Mosquito Fish are also called Topminnows or simply Gambusia fish. They are typically introduced into bodies of water to consume mosquito larvae. Resulting in Gambusia extending far beyond their native range and frequently becoming invasive. They are tough, tolerant fish and they can threaten local species if left unchecked.
Mosquito fish are rare in the aquarium hobby since they lack the bright colors of tropical fish and they are often mislabeled as aggressive. In my tanks they are very calm. For a year now I've been keeping them with Tetras, Bladder Snails and other pets without any issues. A single Mosquito fish even lives in our Endler/Guppy tank - without any issues. Other than constantly trying to breed with the guppies.
Don't believe the hype that surrounds these guys, Eastern Mosquito fish make for perfect aquarium pets. Their strength and constitution alone makes them a very forgiving species for new aquarium keepers.
I am still learning about breeding Gambusia Holbrooki! Anyone with tips or experience should please contact me here in the comments or through the facebook page BucketPonds

I caught some of them out of our front ditch which is along the road here in Gonzales, Louisiana. I’m putting them to work eating mosquito larvae, then, I’ll be harvesting some of this water, now and again, to give to plants.

It happens... Mine won't breed in the aquarium, probably for that reason (too many hungry mouths around)

Worked out well but it took some experimentation. They will not when kept in an aquarium indoors. They will breed like mad in my outdoor ponds though

mosquito fish give live birth and are close relatives to the guppies . they were brought her to keep down mosquitos but they take over small ponds and are very aggressive to other fish species .

No my friend. These are EASTERN Mosquito fish. Yes from the same family but no, they are not the species of which you are familiar. They were not brought here, they are NATIVE in my area. Please educate yourself before trying to flex some form of superiority.
With first hand experience I can testify that they (gambusia holbrooki) are relatively calm towards other species. I've raised one with a large pack of guppies, without issue other than the constant breeding attempts. I keep a small school of them with my darter, without issues. I've kept them with tetras and basically every other creature species in my collection.
These are descended from wild caught parents, from a natural pond within their native range. They are meant to be here and if I am truly recreating native ponds in my area, EASTERN Mosquito fish are a necessity.
      Thanks for watching!

And I feel like you're watching an old video, with nothing better to do than to be a negative influence whilst proving your own ignorance.

@@BucketPonds Funny ! I love your channel. I'm trying to establish a micro-organisms farm for my greedy guppies. I am very lucky that I found your channel.
