    Chinese society and people are in general conservative/traditional, due to beliefs and moral values passed on from ancient times. But despite this, the Chinese society can also be very inclusive due to the stress on ''harmony'' (core belief of Confucianism and also socialism/communism). However, what I think most Chinese people are against is the fake political correctness of the West, as it is often very hypocritical, like it is totally unacceptable to be against one group of people while at the same time completely fine to be xenophobic and hateful against another (Russophobia for example).

    Good topic. It's too bad that at around 7:00 Eugene P. contrasts woke representation with the disparity agenda. It's just an impromptu chat without much forethought, but here are some comments anyway: The second rationale is not the solution to the first, even if the critique of the first is appreciated. You don't need to stay woke, you need to understand how the culture war (woke war) is a class war of the Professional-Managerial Class that can only benefit a small percentage of the population. See on this topic the essay "The Trouble with Disparity" by Walter Benn Michaels and Adolph Reed. Equal or proportional representation in i.e. Hollywood films is about as radical as the equal distribution of wealth inequality among different racially ascribed ethnic and gender etc groups. Not very socialist at all and if that's your angle then you would be in concert with Cold War policy, which was made into something like official cultural policy in the postmodern and Cultural Studies of the 1980s and 90s. We're passed that even if people like Ta-Nehisi Coates sound like the Cosby Show. Some of the key thinkers on this are Barbara and Karen Fields, Adolph Reed, Vivek Chibber, Slavoj Zizek, Alain Badiou, Ellen Meiksins Wood, Cedric Johnson, Mark Fisher, Nevideta Majumdar, Touré Reed, Barbara Foley, Daniel Zamora, Jodi Dean, Paul Street, Sharon Smith, Dan Kovalik, Terry Eagleton, Melissa Nascheck, Ben Fong, and too few others. One issue is that the class analysis is skewed by postmodern theory. The cultural approach advanced by people like Stuart Hall was premised on more or less the end of socialism and the revolutionary left, and the idea was that the new communication technologies would allow for a proliferation of new subjectivities, so the identity struggles of the 50s and 60s that were based on universalism and civil rights were eroded in several ways that you could sum up with the terms of neoliberalism and postmodernism. See the book by Cedric Johnson, "The Panthers Can't Save Us Now" (Verso, 2022). On the subject of Barack Obama and these woke issues, see my book "Too Black to Fail: The Obama Portraits and the Politics of Post-Representation" (Red Quill Books, 2022), which discusses the work of neoliberal postmodernists like artist Kehinde Wiley and the activists who wanted to destroy the New Deal Arnautoff murals at the George Washington High School in San Francisco. For a good critique of the uses of diversity quotas in Hollywood film, see the columns by David Walsh on the World Socialist Web Site. If you don't address the international division of labour and the need to get rid of capitalism on a global scale you're wasting your time and satisfying yourself with the opiates of entertainment -- Chinese entertainment for China and American entertainment for the US, i.e. the meagre anthropological or nationalist definition of culture -- which is not to be dismissive of culture, on the contrary. And that tells you also why the Obamas are now involved in entertainment. If most crimes in the US are committed by whites (33:00), it could also be mentioned that most of the victims of police violence are working-class whites. The real issue in Eugene's way of presenting this is how someone understands the relationship of race and class, or class and nation. The "do both" race and class approach is not a socialist perspective, it's a liberal and postmodern perspective. That's the easy answer. In socialism, class is central but not exclusive. Marxists need to become more adept at disambiguating the conflations that you find in intersectionality, decoloniality, radical democracy, critical race theory, privilege theory and left populism. Brian Becker should weigh in on this identity and class discussion. It's too bad Jeffrey Sachs leaned into the lab leak conspiracy. COVID-19 is the result of zoonotic transfer. There is plenty of evidence for this and zero evidence of a lab leak, which is not even plausible at this point. The scare around gain of function research is an unfortunate side effect of the right-wing lab leak theory that preys one people's lack of scientific knowledge, much like the way that "woke" discourse (i.e. equity and difference politics) preys on people's lack of understanding of both Enlightenment philosophy (and Marxism) and postmodern theories, like discourse theory, deconstruction and Deleuzianism, etc. Scholars who are adept at one often misrepresent the other.

    • @mjleger
      @mjleger Рік тому

      @@andrewmah5605 It's neither here nor there since Obama has a post-race ideology. Getting into the specifics of Obama's racial identity, separate from his politics, leads you to race reductionism, as discussed by Touré Reed in "Toward Freedom: The Case Against Race Reductionism" (Verso, 2020) and Barbara and Karen Fields, "Racecraft: The Soul of Inequality in America" (Verso, 2012). In my book, I address these issues and in the section on "Racialism and Its Discontents." I discuss a few different groupings through which Obama's racial identity is related to different class politics: Race Activists (BLM, Keeanga-Yahmatta Taylor), Post-Race Advocates (Touré Neblett, John McWhorter), Race Managers (Michael Eric Dyson, Ta-Nehisi Coates), Race Brokers (Asad Haider, Chris Chen) and the left Intellectuals who make valuable critiques of all of these.

    The basic thing about the West is that in general people don't like being hit and abused and we must prevent that. That belief is actually not held by large parts of the world, including China. The West values humans as individuals, also a unique position in world history. This is where human rights come from but many nations and cultures in the world reject this idea and China is definitely one of those. The Western powers saw the Chinese legal system in action in the 1830s and saw how brutal it was and how there was no such thing as innocent till proven guilty or the accused having any rights at all and that was so anathema it insisted that Westerners would be tried by their own legal system and not by the Chinese "legal" system. I'm not saying that extraterritoriality was good or right but I can definitely understand why they didn't want a bar of the Chinese system where people's heads are cut off at the whim of some corrupt official. I would NEVER want to be ruled by the current PRC government system. If you like having no rights or freedoms, then go for it. Me, include me out.

      Lol, you Westerners respect human rights so much, you had/have no problem abusing and slaughtering your fellow human beings who happen to have a different skin colour, religion/beliefs, or simply happen to exist in a foerign land you occupy/occupied and invaded. If you really valued about individual rights and freedoms of your fellow human beings, you would not try to impose your own values/beliefs onto them, conquer and occupy their land, which has been pretty much what you've done in the past 200 years. Your hypocrisy and serious lack of awareness is stunning.

    Hard to find someone who seemingly good in chinese but also speak english fluently. The guest is amazing in his analistical views, i totally agree with his assessment. American is just self center and stubborn to learn about others, much less about china….as someone once said” america is an open society but very close minded, china is a close society but very open minded”…

    The issue with black actors playing roles such as Ann Boleyn is she wasn't black and it looks like Hollywood is overcompensating. I'd like to see Brad Pitt play Oprah in the Oprah Winfrey story. Why not tell great stories about black people with black actors instead of having black Hobbits.

    One issue that goes over many people is that the separation between economics and social left. We need to lean (hard) left economically, like China🇨🇳. Socially, the west is already left, maybe abit too left. The former doesn't get much attention at all, it's always the latter pushed by the liberal media and so called "left" politicians and pundits. Everything in the neoliberal west is right or center right economically while way far left socially. The wealthy oligarchy in the west only really care about the economy staying right of center. We need an *economic left turn, ie. see Michael Hudson, Ellen Brown MMT
    btw very good show😊

    there is a thing like, when one flew over the cuckoos nest came out, i was dissapointed in nickleson being cast as mcmurphy, because he is a big irish guy. the key action of the movie, when chief broom throws the machine out the window and escapes, it is what mcmurphy always wanted to do. nickleson is a little guy, not a giant irish guy, and it ruined that whole thing

    Most peoples issue with the LOTR tv show is that they tried and are trying to change from the source material, there is nothing wrong with pointing out that Elves where not black, if they wished for black Elves they are free to make their own story and no one would bat an eye but Hollywood is lazy and profit hungry not hungry for new stories or new concepts.

    The China's transformation from the *"bicycle"* to a *"first world"* society in roughly 40 years is astonishing. However, the Chinese culture hasn't really adjusted to the new global and multicultural society. This is seen in how a lot of Chinese people treat the citizen of their neighboring country of Southeast Asia.

    Eugene, when you say yes, because you mean yes- that's fantastic. Do that all the time. When you say no, but you mean yes, it is incongruent and doesn't work, it creates dissonance, like the whole "the pleasure is all mine" car crash of a thing that starts everything off wrong. "No, I think that's so important" "No, I think you are completely right". Forgive me for such a minor gripe, but this one does grate on me. The reason it's such a minor gripe is because there's nothing else to even try and criticize. Breakthrough news is and continues to be fantastic.
