Oh. My. Gosh! YES!!! I LOVE this! I have already made my 43 file system. I am a BRAND new teacher (still looking for a job) and the way my mentor teacher kept her worksheets was not a great system. I cannot wait to implement this! Thank you!!! :-)
Oh this makes me so happy! I’m so glad it will work for you. And congrats on entering the teaching field. You’re going to love it! Good luck on the job search and thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. 🥰
So glad you could use it! It's a fun little system that can definitely be adapted to suit different needs. And thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. I really appreciate it! ☺♥
I finally have file cabinets 🙌🏽 But I'm using them to store any physical student work. When I didn't have file cabinets, I did this concept with binders -- I just put all the original copies in 1 binder with sheet protectors 😅
I just discovered your channel and I have to say, the 42 Folder System is brilliant! I’m a teacher in Germany and I’m excited to implement this in my classroom this year. It seems like a fantastic way to stay organized and keep track of everything. Thank you for sharing such practical and helpful strategies!"
I’m glad you found it helpful! Yes, I love having everything out of the way and ready to use. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment - it’s very much appreciated! 🌻💕
This is a great system! I will set it up tomorrow when i get to school. I'm also going to put two file folders in each day because im a resource/inclusion teacher for second and third. I also so this on The Lettered Classroom a long time ago.
Oooh good idea! That’s what I love about the system - it’s so easy to modify to meet your needs. Thanks for watching and commenting. And I hope you’re having a great start to the school year! ☺️🌻
I love this. Thank you. I’d love to see a video on how you keep track of marks and observations….for example, learning skills, or other academic observations.
I’m going into my third year of teaching and need help with organization. Thank you so much for explaining this and I can’t wait to implement this in the upcoming school year!!!
That's so awesome that you're going into your third year! How exciting!!! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment - I really appreciate it. Enjoy your summer! 🏖
Ooooh, yeah that’s a tough one. This might be too much, but maybe behind each date you have one folder for each period? When I taught middle school, I used a similar system, but instead of the entire month, it was just Monday-Friday. But I admit, the 43 file system works much better for an elementary school class. Sorry I couldn’t help more!
Hi, brand new teacher here. Thanks for the valuable tips! I have a question though: I would like to sort out the entire school year of workbook pages in advance. While the folders can fit the current month, what about the rest of the workbook? Where do you keep them?
That’s a great question - I’ve actually never planned that far in advance before. I’m not sure how many pages you’re talking about, but it could possibly fit in the month folders if it was just the master copies. Otherwise I think you might have to have another section for them at the very back of the files or in another, smaller cabinet. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful! Maybe others could provide some ideas. 🤔
Oh, man, I should! 😬 I actually can't stand paper clutter so the vast majority of things I just deal with and then toss/recycle. For anything important I just scan it and store it digitally. I also have a small filing box for anything that has to be kept as actual paper. One of the few things I stockpile are the cute little drawings and letters that students have given me over the years. I like to take them out and read them if I'm having a hard week. ☺
Hi Mariel, I am Fifth Grader teacher. I also just discovered your channel as I was looking for a better filing organization. This is what I have been looking for. Thank you! One question, do you put all the subject you teach on that day in each folder? Or do you put each subject separately? Thanks 😊
Great question! I put all the worksheets for every subject in the one folder for that day. I usually don’t have too many worksheets (if any) for every day, but if it doesn’t all fit you could always put a second, not labeled, folder behind the day one to hold overflow papers. Hope that helps! And yay to 5th grade! 🙌🏼🥰
My parents' insurance company started using this numbered system for follow-up on policy changes. The information was written on a small piece of paper with a date on it and filed in the right numbered folder. Then, I would pull those items and check the info to be sure it was done. This kept the file folders off the desk and in the filing cabinet where everyone could find them.
Great idea! For papers, I only use this system and the little bin from my portable grading bin video. But I hope to record more classroom organization videos in August when we’re back in session. Thanks for your suggestion! 🥰
This is a great system that I would to implement! What is confusing is that I have 5 colored folders that I’m thinking of designating Monday to Friday and the rest be one solid color for the rest of the months them days but I’m not sure if have yhose 5 colors would complicate the system. Should it be all one color or like how you have it?
Oh great question! I think you should do whatever feels the most natural for you. But I could see using the numbered/month folders for month long planning. Then having a separate area for your Monday-Friday folders where you pull the content just for the current week and dump it there. Not sure if that makes sense, but I think you could still incorporate both systems if you wanted to! Good luck and let me know how it goes. 🌻
I am so glad I found your channel!! I appreciate your advice and topics and contents you provide. I am starting my alternative teaching certification program - do you have any advice on how to set up my portfolio as someone who as no experience teaching? Also, just any overall tips for alt cert teachers entering the education field from a totally different field/career?
Oh thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and reach out with a comment. If you haven't seen my portfolio video yet, here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/MYO4m5Mr8hc/v-deo.html. I wouldn't see no experience as a barrier. When I was an admin and hiring teachers, what I always prioritized was coachability and a willingness to learn. And, of course, a genuine interest or passion in helping others. Those qualities were more effective as a teacher than experience. For what it's worth, my degree is actually in psychology (I was planning on being a marriage and family therapist...long story!), and decided to try out teaching so that I could get some experience with children. I fell in love with it and here I am! 😊
Oh great question! Sometimes I skip it if it’s not essential, but often I just shift things forward another day. If it was more of a review type assignment, sometimes I even stick it in my emergency sub folder for the students to do another day. Here’s a video that explains my process for extra materials: ua-cam.com/video/gTwRtSaBAO8/v-deo.htmlsi=-xIN9Ee_limIqPRp. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! 🌻
Hello! So let’s say it is August and I bring the August folder foward. That folder will contain the work of the whole month? And then I would distribute it along the numbered folders? When done you collect everything and change all the paper to the next months?
Great questions! I don’t have much in the month folders - just things I use every year. For example, in August I might have a welcome letter and a first day activity. Then I use the date folders when I’m planning each week or so. I just dump the worksheets for that day in the corresponding numbered folder. Nothing carries over in the number folders since those get reused every month. Hope that answers your question! If not, feel free to reply back and I’ll do my best to clarify. Thanks for watching! 🌻
Great question! I’m self contained as well and I’ve found that the copies fit for most days (but that could be because my students also have their own workbooks and composition books too). If the materials don’t fit for a particular day, you could always put another blank file behind the date one to hold overflow papers.
Why do you use twelve folders for the months instead of nine for the 9 months of the school? Is this for school that have year round school? Love your videos?
Great question! We start at the end of August and end at the beginning of June, so July is really the only month I don’t teach (unless I’m teaching summer school - which sometimes I do). But you don’t have to have all 12 months if you don’t want to. Thanks for watching and commenting! 💕
I love this idea, but I don’t think it works for me because I teach six through eighth grade two different classes. So I think I would have to have three separate like that rotating what I do each day. Maybe I’ll devise that next summer but it seems like too big of an undertakingat this point.
Totally agree. I think it’s a much more complicated system once you introduce multiple sections. When I taught middle school I just had a milk crate for each class and had a folder for each day (Monday-Friday). It’s also where I left extra copies so if a kid was absent they knew where to look. It only lets you plan a week at a time though. Maybe something like that could work? Just an idea. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! I appreciate it. 🌻💕

Was trying to combine my subtub with a my daily copies and this works perfectly to keep the flow of things going when I'm absent. ty

Trying to figure out how to adapt this to a high school trimester schedule, where I teach the same class with different kids in different trimesters.

@@TheTimeCrunchedTeacher thank you for trying. The trimester schedule is awful, so it’s really hard to organize.
