- American contralto Louise Homer was one of the most beloved stars in the long history of the Metropolitan Opera. She was there for 30 years, where she sang 42 roles in an astonishing 700 performances. She was a real contralto, and the beauty and power of her voice were most extraordinary. Here she teams with the Great Caruso in a perennial Verdi favorite-Ai Nostri Monti, from Il Trovatore.
My pleasure my friend. These are singers I love. E.C. and Louse Homer were good friends who liked and respected each other. And they sounded GREAT together. She was a very lovable person, and a phenomenal talent.
Louise Homer's rich, velvety contralto and Enrico Caruso's incomparable, sometimes baritone-like timbre blend so beautifully, so absolutely compatibly, I can't imagine a better rendering of this duet. You can feel the chemistry between them. This is a treasure. Thank you my friend!

Thank you so much for this wonderful snapshot of vocal history. Caruso is such a master of line, and Homer's voice is so wonderful- I have been a fan of her for a long time. An often overlooked artist, whose generosity as a colleague has been well documented. I spent some time at the Marcella Sembrich Museum last summer and was thrilled to sing in a space where the great Homer's voice had once reverberated!

Yes, Homer does tend to be overlooked a bit, which is strange considering that she was a great favorite at the Met for an astonishing 30 years. She and Caruso worked together a lot, and from what I can tell, they seem to have been good friends.

... My YT channel is all about Caruso which have led me to largely ignore the many great artists with which he performed at the time. Louise Homer was certainly one of those who historically may have "suffered" as just being another soprano who sang with the Great Caruso...

Both are in fine, exceptional form. Homer is often overlooked... unfairly (not least of which by yours truly). Since every descriptive adjective in praise of Caruso has long ago been exhausted, "miracle" shall again have to suffice. As always, thank you, Edmund!

An old friend, this record.
A real delight! Caruso kept the role of Manrico in his repertoire for a very short period. His proverbial trouble with the high c has probably been the reason for it. Homer sounds divine, as ever!

Louise Homer is good
Caruso at his sweetest and Homer at her most cello like. Many of today's tenors try to sing like Caruso. No one today sings like Homer.
Enrico Caruso shines here as he always does. This isn’t Louise’s best though.
Emily, Louise still sang beautifully enough to give me goosebumps.
This record, one side only, cost $4 back in 1908. That would be equivalent to roughly $130 today. Only the very wealthy could afford it.
Marvellous singing from the great man. What wonderful phrasing & steadiness of tone. I'm afraid I found Homer a bit '' hooty '', it didn't spoil my enjoyment. Henry Webb Pontypool Wales

Die kleine Mühe der EQ-
Einstellung lohnt sich....
Der Eintrag wird ergänzt, weil es sehr unterschiedliche EQ gibt. Er bezieht sich hier auf eine kostenlose *'Bass Booster App' 🎧 apk - ohne* das Zuschalten des BASS BOOST. Die meisten gehen ja mit Bluetooth in ihrem Gerät/Handy richtig um: Audio-Output Stereo, 'Advanced settings' überprüfen, *'Compatibility* Mode' der *App* und evtl 'Sound Field FLAT' Ihrer Anlage (den BBoost nicht - oder vorsichtig verwenden).
Auf *Artikulation* und Instrumente achten; dann wird der Effekt deutlich: differenzierterer Klang - trotz nur Aufnahmehorn - ohne Mikro. "Ohr des Dionysios". Es ist beeindruckend! Der "Samt" in Enricos Stimme ist nun da und die Qualität nähert sich der Wirklichkeit.
Modulation mit 'Bass Booster App':
Der Klangcharakter der Stimmen wird dadurch nicht geändert. Weil jedoch die mMn. *kaum hörbaren* Obertonanteile >>2kHz crescendo-verstärkt werden, gewinnt die Wiedergabe stark an Brillanz (selbst die Akustik wirkt realer) und *Text* ist besser verständlich. Eine 'Zeitreise'..
*EQ-Regelung* ist *KEINE* Änderung einer mgl. zugrunde liegenden Restauration. Sie wirkt aber wie eine 'OhrBrille' oder eine Kirchenorgel stimmen und kann (bei alten Aufnahmen fast stets) zu einer *schärferen* Klarheit der Wiedergabe führen. Das Schöne ist, dass es ohne großen Aufwand erreicht wird. Wer die Musikanlage vom Handy aus (Kopfhörer/Bluetooth) steuert, sollte damit keine Probleme haben. Intensität der BBooster-(EQ) App bitte vollständig nutzen; Gesamtlautstärke ggf. auf der externen Anlage einstellen!
Es ist *NICHT LEICHT,* mittels eines EQ eine merkliche Besserung der Klangqualität antiker Aufnahmen zu finden. Hierzu gibt's *kein* Preset! Die angegebene Präzisionseinstellung© hat hunderte Stunden meist kleiner Schritte der Verfeinerung erfordert (durch Abgleich vieler historischer Aufnahmen von ECaruso, LTetrazzini, Orgel, Violine, Klavier usw. - mit WFurtwängler, ATatum, KRichter, ACortot, SFiorentino etc), um alle Praxistests zu bestehen. Insofern ist nur exakte, *genaueste* ! Befolgung wirklich zielführend in "die 1. Reihe".

As good as this is, I think Caruso's recording with Schumann-Heink is better. The voices are both excellent and remarkably similar, but S-H observes more musical details clearly indicated in the score. Caruso is in better form as well.
