    Heads, or skins can be changed too. I have an Irish tenor banjo with an acrylic head on it & got it changed for a hybrid fabric material which looks like calfskin but is not humidity sensitive. The bridge also got changed to a 3 footed bridge. The result is beautiful...the sound is " thunkier" & warmer, sounding more "Irish"& the material looks natural & more attractive than plastic. The banjolele could have this treatment too but at added cost certainly.

    And i think you are right- banjoleles (or banjos in General) do not have the prettiest sound. In fact they can sound quite "messy" but i think it is kind of cool, that there are ukuleles that almost sound like different Instruments. Its a nice extra to the Ukulele world ;)

    I'd watch tutes on banjoleles too! I love those Goldtone "Little Gems" just because they're SO CUTE! I realize I'm a freak, but I'm okay with it. LOL Actually, I grew up listening to bluegrass music because my older brother taught himself guitar when he was about 15 (I was about 10) and his best friend played banjo. They had a group of family and friends who played mandolin, fiddle, banjo, guitars, upright base, etc. LOVED listening to them when I was young. The banjoele is the best of both worlds. :-)

    That looks so awesome! I have a few questions:
    1) Do you leave the bridge in place on the drum head when not in use, or would that damage the drum head?
    2) If you were to restring a banjo with GCEA strings, what would happen?
    Loving your unboxing and tutorial videos! This is my go-to channel for uke!

    • @rickyfreeman1
      @rickyfreeman1 5 років тому +4

      Leave the bridge in place once set. I have one of these and s regular banjo

    • @DukeBanjoUkuleles
      @DukeBanjoUkuleles 5 років тому +8

      Yes as Ricky said you leave the bridge in place once you have it setup correctly. Not sure what happens if you string a banjo that way. Banjos have steel strings and are not played like a ukulele, whereas the DUKE10 is basically a tenor ukulele with a banjo drum (pot) which makes it louder and brighter.

  • @vananhho1556
    @vananhho1556 5 років тому +1

    Your unboxing videos are always very informative. You really know what kind of information is important! I share the same opinion as you on your preferable sound of a ukulele, but this banjolele indeed has a perfect amount of twanginess!

    Thanks for the review! I was wondering how you change the strings. I could not see how they are secured to the tailpiece.

    • @DukeBanjoUkuleles
      @DukeBanjoUkuleles 5 років тому +3

      Hi Steve - if you visit the home page (dukeuke.com) and scroll down to the first detail pictures you will see the tailpiece and where the strings go. This is a quote from our website: "No More Breaking Strings
      - If you are sick of breaking strings at the tailpiece, the DUKE10 will be your savior. Most other banjo ukuleles tie-off the strings under the metal tailpiece. Needless to say, nylon strings and sharp metal edges do not mix well! To fix the this problem, we designed a simple 'smooth-edge' tailpiece. Now your strings will never break at the tail because they tie-off behind the wooden drum, not the metal."
      Hope that helps - Jamie Houston - Owner, DUKE Banjo Ukuleles

    Interesting Ms.B. This Duke Uke Banjolele looks and sounds like a 10. Cool headstock, kinda looks like a crown, and the colorful gig bag is styling. Hear what you are saying about the tone being close to Sanshin. I like the Sanshun sound so this Duke Banjolele may be an affordable option to achieve the best of both worlds. Sanshin/uke/banjolele all wrapped up in one. Question: it looks like it's open at the back, would a circular piece of foam lower the tone to make it less twangy? I like it's original sound, just thinking of sound options. What do you think it would sound like in Baritone tuning? It really is a elegantly simple looking instrument. Thank you for the review, off to Duke's website I go. (guess now you have to learn "Dueling Banjos" for an IG duet)

    • @DukeBanjoUkuleles
      @DukeBanjoUkuleles 5 років тому +1

      Thanks for your comments ARC 110, glad you like our DUKE10. To answer your question, yes,a piece of foam or something soft would make it less twangy, or more precisely, it would reduce the ghosting effect on the notes, that kind of vibration that you sometimes hear (although you don;t notice it in this video very much at all). But rather than a circular piece, you simply need to roll up something soft (a sock is perfect) and insert it between the head and the back brace, right up where the neck joins the drum.
      With regard to baritone tuning, the scale length is not designed for that so best to stick with tenor strings. Although you can play around with the tuning if you like, it's just that baritone strings are the wrong tension for a shorter scale length. You certainly won't damage the instrument by experimenting though, and we have had a couple of customers who have even switched to light gauge steel strings and it sound great!

    That's how a lot of people attach the strap. Some people including myself on a heavy 5 string banjo with a resonator use a cradle strap but on a light banjo uke you're fine doing it that way. That's pretty spiffy but the hard angles on that head stock are meh. Check the intonation on the outer strings with your tuner, open and then at the 12th fret. Measuring isn't always as accurate.

    I’d say you should use this on more bluegrass type country songs.and you could still play it on the uke because all chords are the same

    how do you know how tight to make the drum head? I have a Deering banjolele, it seems to have bit of a rattle to it when I play. I taped a piece of styrofoam to the back of it to cut down on the rattle/vibration.

    • @DukeBanjoUkuleles
      @DukeBanjoUkuleles 5 років тому +1

      Good question Edwin. It is a question of personal preference. Here is some information that we include on the instruction sheet with every DUKE10 we ship:
      "You can change the tone of the DUKE10 by adjusting the tension of the head by using the included tension key to tighten or loosen the hooks. It is best to start with one hook and then go to the hook on the opposite side of the head and then back across to the next one opposite and so on (in a star pattern). Make sure you only tighten a quarter turn at a time as this ensures the tension is even across the drum head. Even though the head is very tough, you should always be careful when tightening as overtightening could split the head.
      Tightening it to be hard to the touch will give you a very bright sound. You will get good note distinction, but less bass response. Loosening it to be softer to the touch will give a warmer, less bright sound. This gives you control over how you want your DUKE10 to sound.
      "
      With regard to the rattle/vibration, that is part of what makes a banjolele a banjolele. It is quite normal to get that kind of noise, but using styrofoam is a good idea. I sometimes use a pair of my 4 year old's socks in a ball and wedge them between the back of the head and the spine, which removes any rattle or buzz.
      Hope that helps - Jamie Houston, Owner - DUKE Banjo Ukuleles :-)

    But is it cat proof? 🐈
    That tight drum-like top looks like a fun object to pounce on.
    Also your strumming looks remarkably like someone sharpening their claws.
    Hope KitKat didn't get any ideas.

    Is it hard to play the banjo ukulele? Is it tuned the same as the regular ukulele?

    • @DukeBanjoUkuleles
      @DukeBanjoUkuleles 10 місяців тому

      It is tuned and played in exactly the same way as a ukulele, so the biggest difference is that way it sounds (and looks). The DUKE10 Banjolele has a tenor scale length, making the frets wider and the fingerboard longer - this makes it easier to play the chords if you are challenged by the smaller concert or soprano ukulele fingerboards. Hope that helps 🙂

      - there is no ongoing maintenance needed. Once you have the bridge set in place you just play play play! Over time the drum head may need a little bit of a tighten, but that is easy to do and can be quite fun to experiment with different sounds. Plus we provide training on how to do that :-) Jamie Houston, Owner - DUKE Banjo Ukuleles

      Hi Sven - are you in the market for a banjolele? Did you click through the link Bernadette has under this video? You might like the $55 special discount we are offering here: www.dukeuke.com/pages/plazi
      We feel the DUKE10 has been priced very competitively when compared to the features and benefits offered by others.
      A simple comparison could be a Deering tenor banjolele - the standard price is $649, and with a pickup it is $748 (the DUKE10 comes with a pickup as standard) and that doesn’t include a gig bag (that’s an extra $85!). It also doesn’t have an armrest, and it weighs in at a huge 4.5lbs! (the DUKE10 is 2lbs). That’s a huge difference in price right?

      Then I look at the Goldtone BUT Tenor Banjolele which has a hard case (gig bag with the DUKE10), an 8” drum (10" on the DUKE10), no pickup (DUKE10 has a pickup), no armrest (DUKE10 has an armrest) and weighs 2.8lbs (DUKE10 is 2lbs) - it sells for around the same as the DUKE10 but you can’t say it offers the same value.

      So hopefully that helps you put a bit of perspective on comparisons :-) Jamie Houston - Owner, DUKE Banjo Ukuleles

      @@BernadetteTeachesMusic I don't suppose budget banjoleles are a thing? :')
      I love my green uke (learned most of my repertoire from you, thanks!), but I wouldn't mind a little side banjolele, if price permits.
